Since 1970, the architectural analysis of woody plants has given much information about structural and functional organization of tree crowns, their development, and reiteration patterns. In this study, we have extended this method to tree root systems. We describe the whole architecture of three species and we compare their root system and crown architectural patterns. Key words: architecture, tree, root system, crown, whole plant.

This paper explores the current status of public participation in BC forest management with the objective of finding ways to improve it at the policy level. Public participation is discussed in relation to features of deliberative democratic theory and then within the historical context of BC forest management. Recent public complaints concerning inadequate participatory opportunities received at the Forest Practices Board and the move to diminish the extent of public participation in land-use planning is discussed. This paper maintains that effective public participation should be a goal of public forest management and that a corresponding policy should be devised. Key words: public participation, forest management, legitimacy, British Columbia

This article discuss the characteristics of the risk engineering process that would need to be generated in order to properly bring a designed system to market. First, the current status of risk engineering will be discussed from a design perspective by defining and explaining what is meant by key words such as “risk” and “risk engineering process”. The general goals of the risk engineering process for an example fuel cell-based distributed cogeneration system (FC-Based DCG) will be noted before finally discussing the specific objectives, functions, procedure, & expected results of the risk engineering process for the system.

Sixteen physico-chemical variables, and the diversity and abundance of phyto- and zooplankton of two fishponds in Khulna University Campus have been studied during October 2003 and September 2004. A total of 25 phytoplankton genera, 7 belonging to Cyanophyceae, 7 to Chlorophyceae, 8 to Bacillario-phyceae and 3 to Euglenophyceae, and 18 zooplankton genera, 4 belonging to Copepoda, 7 to Cladocera and 7 to Rotifera, were recorded. Both ponds were permanently alkaline in nature. The values of TDS, BOD and phosphate, and the current status of plankton population imply that the study ponds were eutrophic in nature. Key words: Fishponds, physico-chemical conditions, plankton population, Khulna Univ. j. zool. Rajshahi Univ. Vol.25 2006 p.41-44

The paper discusses the current status of work to extend the life of the International Space Station Russian Segment (ISS RS). The effort to monitor and maintain the ISS RS systems and modules in good working order forms the basis of the work aimed at station longevity and the safety of its crew. It describes measures taken to keep the ISS RS operational in a situation where some of the components have been taken out of production, and specified storage life for the spares, tools and accessories has expired. It reviews changes in the requirements for the operation of constituent components, systems and assemblies that were adopted to support extension of the ISS RS mission. It describes a procedure for detecting the sources of failures and malfunctions found in flight and resolving their causes, which makes it possible to take measures aimed at preventing propagation of faults and malfunctions within the shortest time possible while keeping the systems and assemblies of the ISS RS modules operational during repairs. It describes an approach to analysis of the causes of component failures, which makes it possible to classify them for the purposes of statistical analysis, on the basis of which one could evaluate failure dynamics in the course of the mission and use it for making a conclusion about the feasibility of extending flight tests of the ISS RS till 2024 and further. It provides data on dynamics of changes in the number of component failures in the course of the ISS RS mission, which show that this number does not grow. Key words: International Space Station, ISS RS, Russian Segment, operational integrity, operating life, failures.

The aim of the chapter is to investigate the current status of tourism development within the rural localities adjacent to the newly nominated natural world heritage sites (WHS) in Romania. The general methodology will be that of a case study, combining deductive and inductive approaches and the critical interpretation based on the available data. The results show a modest to non-existent tourist infrastructure and shallow tourist activity in the rural area adjacent to the 12 locations of the new natural WHS. The findings also show a low level of awareness regarding the WHS designation among the local authorities and the absence of real cooperation between the custodians of the related protected areas and the local communities. The new WHS locations have a long way ahead to become attractive and sustainable tourist destination by applying adequate destination management which should include the special status of these rural destinations.
