Construction is a complicated process that takes place in an almost uncontrollable environment. Although projects can be carefully planned in advance in principle, there is a chance that unforeseen events and crises can disrupt these plans, affecting project development. Because the initial investment expenditures in construction projects are so large, they may be quickly influenced by crises, resulting in significant financial losses. The 2014 financial crisis was one of the most prominent crises that Iraq faced, which significantly impacted various activities in general and the construction industry in particular. Despite the importance of crisis management systems, the researchers found a great lack of local studies looking at crisis management, specifically in the basic stages chosen for its development, which are before, during, and after a crisis. Therefore, an effective crisis management system has been developed consisting of 20 critical success factors with devising 59 actions that can be taken for each proposed criterion for each of the three stages of crisis.

One of the most important aspect of quality in a project is workmanship. Most contractors have failed in meeting stakeholders’ needs in the area of workmanship as it relates to the objectives of cost, quality and time. The lack of a workmanship management system in the construction process is one of the major problems facing the construction industry. In this regard, this study is aimed at developing an integrated benchmarking framework to measure workmanship performance of construction projects at any stage with focus on ensuring quality. To do so, the study undertakes a critical survey of literature and building professionals using mixed survey methods. It then uses the information gathered to develop an integrated workmanship benchmarking framework by integrating three major existing quality management techniques that include TQM, Six Sigma and SMS. This study successfully developed an integrated benchmarking framework with capability to measure the workmanship performance at both organization and project levels in any stage of construction projects. Also, the study identified a set of critical success factors for workmanship assessment and is expected to assist with and guide in the development of a workmanship performance assessment tool for the construction industry in developing counties including Trinidad and Tobago.

Purpose The decentralisation of information and high rate of mobile content access in the construction industry provides an ideal scenario for improvement of processes via the implementation of the paradigm of the Internet of Things (IoT). Smart devices are considered as the objects interconnected in the IoT; therefore, they play a fundamental role in the implementation of digital solutions during the execution of construction projects. The purpose of this paper is to assess the critical factors for a successful implementation of smart devices in the construction industry. Design/methodology/approach An empirical study was performed in the Dominican Republic. This country, located at the heart of the Caribbean, presents an economy that strongly relies on the construction industry. Following a systematic approach, a qualitative data collection and analysis was performed based on semi-structured interviews and content analysis to professionals of construction companies in the Dominican Republic, enquiring the concept of smart devices and critical success factors for implementing the devices in the industry. Findings The key success factors obtained from the contestants were leadership, technology awareness, company size, usability of proposed solution, cost of implementation and interoperability. Originality/value This paper provides information to clients of the construction sector regarding the benefits of embedding smart devices into their business activities. Furthermore, this study provides a better understanding of the key factors to be considered by construction organisations when embedding smart devices into their projects. This study also provides recommendations for distinct stakeholders of the construction sector, such as policy makers, clients and technology consultants. Policy makers should especially consider factors such as technology awareness and leadership to develop the right policies for the integration of the IoT in construction projects. Technology consultants should be aware of the latest case studies of successful implementation of smart devices and IoT systems in the world in order to adapt and implement smart devices and IoT in their projects.

In the area of the construction sector, the primary concern is economic growth. There are many issues and challenges associated with it. The growth and rapid development of this industry put their players, mainly the construction firms feeling the heat by competing with each other. The main challenge is the completion period for a particular project. This study was done in Manila, Philippines, where Design and Build (D&B) method has gained much interest and considered very important today. The rise of new innovative systems saw the emergence of new factors in the construction industry that will become future adoption. This study focuses on factors affecting the successful completion period of the construction industry, whereby it is very crucial for the country's economic and market development. A quantitative research methodology was applied in this study. A total of 967 survey questionnaires sent out, and only 396 respondents fit to be analysed. Respondents involved were contractors, consultants, and developers. It was learned that critical success factors in project management play significant roles in driving projects to examine the determinants of success completion time of Design & Build construction projects. Findings from this study shall be used by the authority in drafting a policy guideline for future construction development. It is hoped that this study provides a better understanding of construction challenges for future undertaking.

A review of published studies on risk management in developing countries reveals that critical success factors for implementing risk management has remained an under-researched area of investigation. This paper is aimed at investigating the perceptions of construction professionals concerning the critical success factors (CSFs) for implementation of risk management systems (IRMS). Survey data was collected from 87 construction professionals from the Iranian construction industry as a developing country. The results indicate that four factors are regarded as highly critical: ‘support from managers’, ‘inclusion of risk management in construction education and training courses for construction practitioners’, ‘attempting to deliver projects systematically’, and ‘awareness and knowledge of the process for implementing risk management’. Assessing the associations among CSFs also highlighted the crucial role of enhancing the effectiveness of knowledge management practices in construction organisations. Study also revealed that parties involved in projects do not agree on the level of importance of CSFs for implementing risk management in developing countries. This study contributes to practice and research in several ways. For practice, it increases understanding of how closely knowledge management is associated with the implementation of risk management systems in developing countries. For research, the findings would encourage construction practitioners to support effective knowledge management as a precursor to higher levels of risk management implementation on construction projects.

Since the beginning of 1990s, there has been an increasing emphasis on supply chain collaboration in the UK construction industry through learning from manufacturing. The adoption of supply chain collaboration is now widely recognised as an effective way of addressing various traditional construction problems. This paper presents the findings of a research project that examines the practitioners’ perspectives on supply chain collaboration in construction projects. The critical success factors (CSFs) of supply chain collaboration are identified from an online focus group discussion and ten expert interviews, whose results are analysed by using the NVivo software package. Unlike existing studies, this study develops an input-process-output model based on the categorisation of the identified CSFs. In addition, supply chain collaboration is compared between public and private sectors, between short-term and long-term programmes, between upstream and downstream supply chains, and between different areas of relationships. The comparative analysis describes the balanced and the unbalanced natures of supply chain collaboration. The findings in this study provide a better understanding of supply chain collaboration in today’s construction practice. Although this study is based on the UK construction industry, its findings may also be useful for construction organisations in other countries to pursue supply chain collaboration.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the level of implementation of Six Sigma (SS) in the construction industry of Pakistan along with the current state of affairs and the challenges, and opportunities for a successful implementation. Design/methodology/approach The research is purely exploratory in nature. Based on published work, critical success factors are gathered, and a number of questionnaire surveys and interviews are conducted to refine and quantify their impact. A system dynamics framework to assess the SS influence on project success is developed and case study project are simulated. Findings The construction industry of Pakistan is still functioning in a traditional way; marred with low level of awareness and ad hoc approaches, the findings point to a huge improvement opportunity. Further, when under planning projects are exposed to SS, the chances of project success improve better than under execution projects. Research limitations/implications The limited level of awareness possessed by the respondents constrains the possible outreach of this work in industrially developed contexts. However, this work may become an impetus for further research in managing quality in construction industry. Practical implications The findings can be used to improve the quality provision of construction projects. Originality/value This work may trigger an important debate over the research and implementation of SS in the construction industry of developing countries that may greatly benefit by improving the quality of their projects and rectify their diminishing reputation for project success.

Cloud Computing has become a valuable platform for sustainability in many countries. This study evaluates the cloud computing implementation and its Critical Success Factors (CSFs) towards ensuring sustainable construction projects in Nigeria. Data were collected from previous literature, supplemented by a quantitative approach via a questionnaire survey. Data were collected from 104 construction professionals while cloud computing CSFs were examined using Relative Importance Ranking (RII) and Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA). The results show that cloud computing’s awareness level is 96.2%, which means that the respondents are aware of cloud computing concept. Furthermore, the result shows that most of the respondents are adopting the concept. The analysis of the CSFs indicated that reliable data storage, performance as well as cost of accessibility and availability were the four most significant CSFs to cloud computing applications. Analysis of the CSFs through EFA generated four main components which include human satisfaction, organization, client’s acceptance, and industry-based. Consequently, this study contributed to existing body of knowledge by highlighting the cloud computing CSFs for achieving sustainable construction project. As such, the results could be a game-changer in the construction industry—not only in Nigeria but also in developing nations where construction projects are implemented through similar style and procedure. This study would be a benchmark for supporting decision-makers to improve data fragmentation, in which the use of data is paramount to the execution of construction works. Finally, the results of this study would be useful for enhancing sustainability and general management of construction projects through cloud computing implementation.

A great emphasis has taken place to identify and analyse the factors that have been af­fecting the success and the failure of construction projects in recent decades. As a project-based industry, construction has heavily invested in such research. Moreover, the construction industry suffers the most to meet deadlines and budgets limits. The objective of this paper is to identify the critical success factors in construction industry. The study focused on Middle East region. In order to achieve this objective, 25 project success factors were identified by reviewing related literature. The factors were assessed for their impact and contribution to the actual performance of the project on three criteria: schedule, cost, and quality. Then a questionnaire was developed and sent to dif­ferent experts in the construction industry. The collected data of 111 responses was then analysed statistically by using different tools such as: importance index, Spearman’s rank correlation factor and T-test. As a result, company’s technical capacity and scope and work definition were ranked the most important factors. The results of this research may provide a great assistance to professionals and researchers in identifying the critical factors in the construction industry.

The number of construction activities nowadays increased rapidly due to urbanization and economic growth. The increased number of construction activities will cause adverse effects and huge impacts on the natural environment, and integrity of the construction process. Compared to the other industries, it is far behind in the implementation of the Environmental Management System (EMS). This paper aims to investigate the success factors of the implementation of EMS in the construction industry. EMS introduced several control strategies with proper management to address environmental issues caused by construction activities. This study reviewed some of the past studies related to EMS, construction industry, and also sustainable development in construction projects. EMS helps in minimizing environmental impacts by providing a framework that supports a construction company through reliable control. EMS integrates environment management into the company’s long term planning, daily operations and other quality management system.

The delay in the construction industry is a global phenomenon and the construction industry in Nepal can!t be the exception. To deliver the project product on time, within the budget, of quality in the safest manner is the goal of project management. Even potentially good projects are failing because of the weak project management performance in Nepalese construction projects. Due to the lack of research based findings in these areas, the new project managers are facing problems about in which areas they need to focus for successful delivery of the project. The purpose of this research is to find out the critical success  factors  of  project management  that  help  the  project  parties  reach  their  goal  as  planned  in Nepalese  hydropower projects. In this study, general success factors of project management were collected from various literatures and the pilot survey, rank them based on relative importance index (RII), and found top seven success factors as critical success factor. Based on the 85 responses from project managers and experts working in hydropower projects in the first stage study, top seven  success  factors  of  project  management  were  Effective  communication  between  project  team  members  (S1),  Job satisfaction  of  project  team  members  (S2),  Timely  decision  by  client  (S3),  Competence  of  the  project  manager  (S4), Effective coordination between stakeholders, public institutions (S5), Competence of the project team members (S6), Proper and timely supervision (S7).
