Experiments were carried out to investigate the flow characteristics with/without heat exchange in vertical and inclined tube-bundle channels. In the experiments, the influences of flow directions and heat exchange upon the flow characteristics were studied. Experiments showed that the flow friction in tube-bundle channels had relations to the flow directions, and the liquid temperature difference at the inlet and outlet of tube-bundle channels. And these influences were comparatively obvious in the laminar flow regime. In the experiments, the transition from laminar to turbulent flow was carefully observed. The flow characteristics of single phase flow through tube-bundle channels were different from those in circular tubes and those in annular channels. The flow friction in tube-bundle channel is larger than that in normal circular tube. And the transition from laminar flow to turbulent flow in tube-bundle channel is different from that in normal circular tube. The influences of flow direction and heat exchange on the friction were also studied. The results were gained to provide the basis for the further investigations on the two-phase flow in tube-bundle channels.

From the viewpoint of practical application, based on the unsteady analytical model for transverse fluid elastic instability of tube array proposed by Yetisir and the linear attenuation function introduced by Li Ming, a new explicit model based on nonsteady state “streamtube” hypothesis is proposed and solved using complex number method. In the model, numerical integral is avoided and inappropriate aspects in Li Ming model are modified. Using the model, the fluid elastic instability analysis of a single flexible tube is made. The stability graphs for four typical types of tube array are plotted and contrasted with experimental results. It is found that the current explicit model is effective in the analysis of transverse fluid elastic instability of tube bundle.

Abstract LMPH (Radiation heat exchange tube), the key section of ethylene cracking furnace, has various failure behaviors (e.g., carbonation, vulcanization, oxidation, and deformation) because of its rigorous working conditions and complicated structure [1]. In this paper, the ultrasonic guided wave is applicable to inspect the interior and surface of the LMPH tube. The results demonstrate that large components in the similar structure of the heat exchange bent tube bundle can be inspected effectively, efficiently, conveniently, compared with the traditional inspection method. One inspection example of an ethylene cracking furnace tube bundle is forwarded. The paper also provides an engineering application/case and valuable crafting process for the detection of similar structures by the ultrasonic guided wave method.

Evolvent form can be applied in the new design of an air cooler and shell and tube heat exchanger used in the oil and gas industry. The air cooler is constructed as a vertically cylindrical multi-section with the evolvent-profile tube row in tube bundle. Tubes have a U-shape form for solving the problem of destruction from linear thermal expansion during maintenance. The dismountable shell-and-tube heat exchanger has an evolvent-profile tube bundle. The advantage of this heat exchanger is its dismountable construction, maintainability and energy efficiency. This is enhanced by the construction of the heat exchange element, which consists of stainless corrugated flexible tubes. Dismountable construction is achieved by a set of flanges and fittings. The energy efficiency of the heat exchanger is determined by thin wall of the corrugated tube, which is 0.3 mm, whereby a heat energy will be transferred faster from a hot stream to cold liquid. Also, energy efficiency is enhanced by tight packing of the tube bundle, which contributes to increase heat transfer area per unit volume. Such solutions contribute to the promotion of more efficient technological equipment and promising ideas for further development and improvement of technical and technological complexes. The fouling of heat exchange equipment leads to serious economic losses in many industries, therefore to find a method to reduce deposits on heat transfer surfaces remains an actual task. In this paper, a practical solution is proposed for the implementation of a pulsating cleaning method of oil coolers as an example. The influence of pulsations on cleaning of the external surface of the heat exchanger is studied by computer modeling with Ansys Fluent. The fluid flow was described by the Navier-Stokes equation, particle motion and their interaction was described by the discrete element method (DEM). In the study, a staggered tube bundle was considered. The pulse frequency 0,3125 Hz, the amplitude referred to the diameter of tube is 35, the Reynolds number 100, the duty cycle of the pulsations 0,25. Oil was chosen as the medium. Evaluation of the pulsating cleaning method was carried out on the basis of the analysis of the mechanics of particle collisions on the surface of the central cylinder in the beam, with stationary and pulsating flow. It was found that the pulsating flow helps to reduce deposits in the front of the cylinder and is not effective in the back. An analysis of the mechanics of particle impact on the heat exchange surface showed that this pulsation mode is more effective for removing plastic deposits.
