Abstract The development of barbed-spring locks in ancient China has a history of more than two thousand years. With the development of the design and manufacturing techniques in ancient China, the safety of locks has gotten better and better. Since the 17th century, the puzzle lock, with a complicated structure and a high difficulty in opening, was gradually developed and used. The puzzle lock needs specific steps to be opened. Even if strangers have the correct key, it is still difficult for them to open the lock immediately. Based on the difficulty of the opening process, traditional Chinese puzzle locks can be partition into two sorts, namely, general puzzle locks and complex puzzle locks. As the structure of the puzzle lock will change during the opening process, the puzzle lock belongs to the reconfigurable mechanism. In this paper, a method of topology matrix is provided to analyze the structure of the complex puzzle lock during operation systematically. Firstly, the characteristics and types of general puzzle locks are explained, and then the topology matrix representation is introduced. Finally, four complex puzzle locks are taken as examples, to illustrate the opening process. There are various types of complex puzzle locks, and the mechanism designs are quite ingenious and interesting, which shows the extraordinary technique and ingenuity of the ancient craftsmen.

We study the asymptotic behaviour of eigenvalues of 2D vibrating systems with mass density perturbed in a vicinity of closed curves. The threshold case in which the resonance frequencies of the membrane and the frequencies of thin inclusion coincide is investigated. The perturbed eigenvalue problem can be realized as a family of self-adjoint operators acting on varying Hilbert spaces. However the so-called limit operator is non-self-adjoint and possesses the Jordan chains of length 2. Apart from the lack of self-adjointness, the operator has non-compact resolvent. As a consequence, its spectrum has a complicated structure, for instance, the spectrum contains a countable set of eigenvalues with infinite multiplicity. The complete asymptotic analysis of eigenvalues has been carried out.

A class of bivariate integer-valued time series models was constructed via copula theory. Each series follows a Markov chain with the serial dependence captured using copula-based transition probabilities from the Poisson and the zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) margins. The copula theory was also used again to capture the dependence between the two series using either the bivariate Gaussian or “t-copula” functions. Such a method provides a flexible dependence structure that allows for positive and negative correlation, as well. In addition, the use of a copula permits applying different margins with a complicated structure such as the ZIP distribution. Likelihood-based inference was used to estimate the models’ parameters with the bivariate integrals of the Gaussian or t-copula functions being evaluated using standard randomized Monte Carlo methods. To evaluate the proposed class of models, a comprehensive simulated study was conducted. Then, two sets of real-life examples were analyzed assuming the Poisson and the ZIP marginals, respectively. The results showed the superiority of the proposed class of models.

The paper studies two types of indirect (secondary) nomination: simulative and indicative ones, exemplified by extracts from English coursebooks on economics. The similative nomination is actualised through functional transfer, which is interpreted as a separate kind of metaphor termed “actional metaphor”. The analysis of indicative nomination is focused on metonymy and synecdoche (as its closely related device), which is conditioned by the same transfer principle on the basis of an essential attribute. The semantic derivates are considered in sentences representing such logic thought form as definition, which allows to reveal the metaphoric and metonymic processes in the field of English economic terminology. The research discloses the interrelations between the analysed term models and their functions as designators for target and source domains on the one hand, and cognitive metaphor types (ontological and conceptual), on the other hand. The author comes to the conclusion that both types can have either simple or complicated structure. Similarly, there are simple and complicated metonymies. These phenomena make the peculiarities of the given economic discourse when considered from the angle of semantic derivation. The tendency to the uniform secondary semiotic code in term metaphor description can be viewed as another valid peculiarity of economic discourse. With regard to the indicative secondary nomination, the main findings are as follows: the metonymic lexis is organized as a chain opposition: terms and nomens – terms – terms and common lexis – common lexis. The mechanism of forming “mixed” kinds of the indirect nomination, i.e. metaphtonymy and synecdoche-metonymy, is revealed in the course of the context analysis. This leads the author to a hypothetical argument that it is the actional metaphor that underlies these mixed types of semantic derivatives. Both types of the secondary nomination have a systemic nature: metaphor is described in other system units; metonymies have field structure and are actualised through specific oppositions.

The theoretical study of the positron annihilation in complex material such as zeolite is greatly significant to support and increase the accuracy analysis of the material structure from the experimental data of the positron annihilation. The mordenite zeolite is a big and complicated structure consisting of channels and cavities. The analysis of the mordenite structure is studied by the PALS so depending on the selection of the positron lifetime components of the positron annihilation spectra fitting methods. Therefore, these positron life times in on TO4, Na, Ca, K, Fe, H2O and the rings which form the channels and cavities are sophisticatedly studied by the DFT calculation using Ab-initio. The mordenite and modified mordenite zeolite structures are precisely analyzed, and the physical behaviors of the positron in these are more understood by these theoretical results.

Installation of ancillary facilities such as electrical rooms is crucial due to the complicated structure and division of the interior of a complex building. Furthermore, carbon-dioxide extinguishing systems are mainly installed in these ancillary facilities, and the number of systems installed has been increasing annually. Accordingly, the importance of in-house inspection is being emphasized. In this study, the literature and statistics related to the in-house inspection of fire-fighting facilities were reviewed. Based on the results, problems were derived from the overlap between in-house inspection and similar inspection, the installation location of the pressure switch, the installation standard of the air respirator, the safety awareness of people involved, and the technical qualification level of the in-house inspection assistant. Additionally, improvement measures to enact, amend, and establish public notices were proposed for self-inspection systems.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze two significant treatises concerning the constitutional structure of the 16th century French monarchy, namely Jean Bodin’s Les Six livres de la République and Vindiciae, contra tyrannos written under the pseudonym of Brutus. The texts were answers to an ongoing institutional crisis of the monarchy, especially in light of the strictly connected issues of decentralization and the weakness of the royal administrative apparatus. The paper portrays how the tension between the royal administration and the complicated structure of the local networks of power not only rendered it impossible for both Bodin and Brutus not to take a stance on the matter but also how it influenced the shape of their theories. An analysis of how Brutus and Bodin tried to incorporate the complex institutional realities of the French kingdom into their own theories sheds some light on the authors’ attitude towards the functioning of the local centres of power, their theoretical disabling or using them on purpose; it also points to how much the actual decentralization of the state influenced the shape of the theories of both authors.

This paper presents the design and research results of a claw pole machine with hybrid excitation. This machine is excited by permanent magnets and an electromagnetic coil. Both excitation sources are located in the rotor of the machine. Additionally, the rotor is made of a laminated core. This approach facilitates the process of its construction and enables the implementation of even very complicated structure of the rotor, which would be difficult in case of making the rotor from a one piece of material. This paper presents the construction as well as the results of simulation and experimental tests of the machine prototype. The tests showed that the proposed machine has the ability to adjust the voltage in a wide range. Such as a feature could be used, for example, to increase the speed of motor operation in case of an electric vehicle application, but also to regulate the voltage in wind turbines which generators operate at varying rotor speeds resulting from changing wind speed.
