First record of the soil cyanobacterium Nodosilinea epilithica (Synechococcales, Cyanobacteria) in Russia

Nodosilinea epilithica Perkerson et Casamatta is reported for the first time for Russia. The sample was isolated from a typical chestnut soil in the zone of dry steppes (Volgograd Region) and its identity was confirmed by morphological and molecular analyses. The specific feature of the studied strain is its ability to form nodules at normal (60–75 μmol photons ∙ m-2 ∙ sec-1) light. The number of nodules is supposed to be related to the age of a cyanobacterial culture.

Summary Chitwoodius coffeae sp. n. is described, including SEM observations and molecular (D2-D3 expansion segment of the rDNA 28S) analysis, from a coffee plantation in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. The new species is characterised by its 1.69-2.01 mm long body in females and 1.29-1.51 mm in males, lip region offset by deep constriction and 15-17 μm broad, odontostyle 27-30 μm long, neck 340-473 μm long, pharyngeal expansion occupying 52-54% of total neck length, uterus a simple tube-like structure 68-106 μm long, vulva longitudinal (V = 54-59), tail short and rounded conoid (20-28 μm, c = 54-88, c′ = 0.6-0.8) with a nearly terminal projection of inner cuticle layer, spicules 60-64 μm long, and 7-10 spaced ventromedian supplements without hiatus. SEM pictures, available for the first time for a representative of the genus, show a hexagonal (nearly hexastellate) oral field divided into six sectors by the existence of six deep incisures. Molecular analyses, also presented for the first time for a representative of the genus, results in a narrow evolutionary relationship among Chitwoodius and Tylencholaimus, and supports the monophyly of the Tylencholaimidae. This is the first record of Chitwoodius in Asian Far East territories. Chitwoodius ahmadi sp. n. is proposed for a misattributed population of C. seshadrii.

The genus Albatrellus, mostly known from temperate zones in North America, Europe and some Asian countries, is unusual among Russulales in having a poroid hymenophore, as other Albatrellaceae. Albatrellus is reported here for the first time from Thailand, with macro- and micromorphological descriptions and supporting illustrations. Molecular analyses of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) confirmed that our collection is closely related to Albatrellus subrubescens, but genetic distances suggest that it could be a new species. More collections are needed from Thailand or neighboring countries to firmly establish its taxonomic identity. DNA sequencing of ectomycorrhized root tips, with both ITS (to identify the fungal partner) and psbA-trnH (to identify the plant partner) demonstrated that Pinus kesiya was the ectomycorrhizal host of the Thai collection of Albatrellus.

Abstract The eggs of Polka-dot ribbonfish Desmodema polystictum have been recorded for the first time in the Indian Ocean. Although the only previous information on eggs from this species consists of line drawings from 1973 (Pacific Ocean), the identification was possible by combining morphological and molecular analyses. As far as we are aware, only few confirmed records of adult individuals have been previously reported from the Indian Ocean. We found eggs in the proximity of numerous adults (57 and 42 individuals at two stations) indicating that the Central Indian Ocean is potentially an important spawning ground of D. polystictum.

Isomucor trufemiae was isolated and described for the first time from soil samples collected in the state of São Paulo State, Brazil, in 2012. Eight years later, we isolated this species in the state of Pernambuco as the second record worldwide and the first record to northeastern Brazil. Isomucor trufemiae URM 8342 was isolated from a soil sample during a study on the diversity of Mucorales in a Montane Atlantic Forest area in the municipality of Bonito, Pernambuco, Brazil, and identified through morphological and molecular analyses (ITS and LSU sequences of rDNA). Aspects of the morphology and distribution of this species are commented in this manuscript.

A Helorid wasp, Helorus ruficornis Förster, 1856, is reported for the first time on Tahiti (Society Islands), which is also the first record of both Proctotrupoidea and family Heloridae in French Polynesia. The potential hosts of Helorus ruficornis in French Polynesia are discussed.

   The Ciliophoran Trichodina magna Van As and Basson, 1989 is recorded for the first time in in Iraq from gills of the blue tilapia Oreochromis aureus (Steindachner, 1864) Iraq from Al-Graiat location on the Tigris River at Baghdad city. Euastrum lacustre is reported for Russia for the first time. This alcaliphilic species was found in the periphyton and plankton of three lakes in the Kursk Region (European Russia). A description of morphology, including the relief of cell wall, and habitats where this taxon is found are represented. LM and SEM microphotographs are provided. Morphological differences of E. lacustre from similar species are discussed. New species for region, namely Closterium aciculare, Cosmarium formosulum, C. granatum, C. pseudoinsigne, C. reniforme and Staurastrum pingue, are found in the samples together with E. lacustre.

Until recently only two species of Gyalideopsis (G. piceicola and G. alnicola) were known from very few localities in Russia. Gyalideopsis helvetica is reported for the first time for Russia from the southern part of Baikal area (KhamarDaban Range, Baikalsky Zapovednik). Description of the collected specimen and its comparison with the literature data are provided; morphology, ecology and distribution of G. helvetica are discussed. The hyphophores of G. helvetica are recorded and described for the first time. An identification key to Gyalideopsis species known in Russia is provided.

The genus Hemiflagellochloris Watanabe et al. was found in Russia for the first time. The algal strain was isolated from a buried solonetz in the zone of dry steppes (the north-end of Ergeni Hills, Volgograd Region). The morphology and ecology of this isolate are described. Its phylogenetic position within Chlorophyceae is determined by molecular analysis of 18S rDNA gene.
