In wireless sensor networks, LEACH is often used as an energy saving protocol and extends the network life. However, there are many parameters that affect the performance of the LEACH protocol, one of which is the number of cluster heads. This paper proposes a simple and efficient solution to determine the optimal number of cluster heads in the LEACH protocol. For the proposed solution, the system can achieve the optimal performance between the longest lifetime in the constraint as the largest amount of data transmitted in the network.

It is necessary to consider the energy efficiency of nodes and load balance in wireless sensor networks. This paper combines with the network of the actual heterogeneous nodes, the improved algorithm of LEACH is proposed, which is called LEACH-HA. The optimal number of cluster heads is derived with improved in the network which increases energy of nodes become cluster probability. A hybrid communication mode that cluster heads alternate between single hop and multi-hop mode is proposed. After analysis LEACH-HA improves the energy efficiency among nodes and expands the coverage of network.

Due to limited energy, computing ability, and memory of Wireless sensor Networks(WSN), routing issue is one of the key factors for WSN. LEACH is the first clustering routing protocol, which can efficiently reduce the energy consumption and prolong the lifetime of WSN, but it also has some disadvantage. This paper proposed an improvement based LEACH, called LEACH-T. According to different number of clusters, LEACH-T uses variable time slot for different clusters in steady-state phase, and single-hop or multi-hop to transmit data between cluster heads and Base Station. Also it considered residual energy of sensor nodes and the optimal number of clusters during selection of the cluster heads. The simulation results show that LEACH-T has better performance than LEACH for prolonging the lifetime and reducing the energy consumption.

In order to prolong the lifetime of wireless sensor networks, improvement of cluster-head selection mechanism based on LEACH protocol is proposed. To make the energy distribution more uniform, we consider the relationship of the density of nodes, residual energy of nodes and distance between nodes and Sink node. It eliminates the defect of energy consumption imbalance in the network caused by random position of cluster-heads and the problem of premature death of nodes caused by low energy nodes becoming cluster-heads. Simulation results show that compared with LEACH algorithm, the improved algorithm extend the network lifetime.

Abstract Despite the success of various clustering algorithms for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), there are few works that consider the interference between clusters. Obviously, interference-free clustering makes the communication more efficient and achieves energy saving. In this paper we propose a new clustering method for large-scale sensor networks. With this method the network is partitioned into clusters. Intra-cluster communication in a cluster has no interference by its neighbor clusters. Moreover, the proposed clustering is based on a Genetic Algorithm (GA), which can achieve optimal performance in terms of the number of isolated nodes. This is demonstrated by the simulation analysis.
