ABSTRACT We determine an optimal alerting configuration for the propagation of local undamped motion (PLUM) earthquake early warning (EEW) algorithm for use by the U.S. ShakeAlert system covering California, Oregon, and Washington. All EEW systems should balance the primary goal of providing timely alerts for impactful or potentially damaging shaking while limiting alerts for shaking that is too low to be of concern (precautionary alerts). The PLUM EEW algorithm forward predicts observed ground motions to nearby sites within a defined radius without accounting for attenuation, avoiding the earthquake source parameter estimation step of most EEW algorithms. PLUM was originally developed in Japan where the alert regions and ground motions for which alerts are issued differ from those implemented by ShakeAlert. We compare predicted ground motions from PLUM to ShakeMap-reported ground motions for a set of 22 U.S. West Coast earthquakes of magnitude 4.4–7.2 and evaluate available warning times. We examine a range of prediction radii (20–100 km), thresholds used to issue an alert (alert threshold), and levels of impactful or potentially damaging shaking (target threshold). We find optimal performance when the alert threshold is close to the target threshold, although higher target ground motions benefit from somewhat lower alert thresholds to ensure timely alerts. We also find that performance, measured as the cost reduction that a user can achieve, depends on the user’s tolerance for precautionary alerts. Users with a low target threshold and high tolerance for precautionary alerts achieve optimal performance when larger prediction radii (60–100 km) are used. In contrast, users with high target thresholds and low tolerance for precautionary alerts achieve better performance for smaller prediction radii (30–60 km). Therefore, setting the PLUM prediction radius to 60 km balances the needs of many users and provides warning times of up to ∼20 s.

This creates a mentoring and learning environment in higher education that is conducive to producing optimal performance from their faculty, staff, and students.

This 2019 DIPA Grand’s research designed and fabricated the size of hydraulic ram (hydram) pump utilized in Pakandangan, Padang Pariaman Regency. There is a water source in this area which has not been functioned adequately to irrigate the paddy field of 10 hectares due to the location of the paddy field which is higher than the water source. However, the use of designed hydram pump has no been maximized as the pump’s optimal performance was not determined yet. Therefore, a hydram pump was designed by varying the load of waste valve in the weight of 400 g, 600 g, 800 g, 1,000 g, and 1,200 gr. It was also varied in the volume of the chamber when the pump operated which were 4.86 lt, 5.76 lt, 6.48 lt, 7.29 lt, and 8.1lt. The height (Hd) of the inlet pipe was 1 m, and the lift height (Hs) of the outlet pipe was 5 m. The results obtained from Pump performance increases with increasing cylinder volume. The increase in the load of the exhaust valve volume of the tube remains a significant decrease. Hydram pump performance occurs at a load of 400 g with a tube volume of 8.1 l with an efficiency of 53%

Achieving an optimal performance is one way for athletes to demonstrate the ability and quality of performance in a sport. Physical condition is the coverage of several indicators related to human physical abilities which directly contribute to the physical activity ability of an athlete. In addition, anthropometry is also a determining factor for the success of athletes in achieving an achievement. The purpose of this study was to determine and provide evidence in the form of scientific data from the results of research related to the physical condition and anthropometry levels of athletes, because these 2 indicators greatly influence the achievement of athletes. This type of research is descriptive quantitative, using a survey method with test and measurement instruments. The samples in this study were 10 volleyball athletes and 10 athletic athletes aged 9-12 years. The results of data analysis based on the results of the study indicate that the problem of minimal achievement of athletes in volleyball and athletics is due to the level of physical condition and anthropometry which are still less than ideal.

Abstract This study proposes three hybrid Schottky-ohmic gate structures for normally-off p-GaN gate AlGaN/GaN HEMTs. One has a Schottky-gate cover on the ohmic-gate and has part of the area contact to the p-GaN surface at the left and right sides of ohmic-gate (Structure A). The two others only have the Schottky-gate contact to the p-GaN surface at the left side (Structure B) or right side (Structure C) of the ohmic-gate. Different gate metal designs change the hole injection from p-GaN to GaN channel and show various gate leakages. The optimized contact length of Schottky-gate can suppress on-state gate leakage current over two orders of magnitude compared to conventional ohmic p-GaN gate HEMT. The improved on-state maximum drain current is over 60 mA/mm compared to Schottky p-GaN gate HEMT. Optimal performance in Structure B with Schottky-gate contact length ranges from 0.8 to 1.8 μm in a 2 μm gate geometry.

Minimizing fuel consumption is a priority for ship-owners seeking to reduce their vessel costs due to sea conditions. One of the most reliable methods used to estimate fuel consumption is to identify field investigations for future voyages. The VLCC Salina was used based on daily field data collected over a proper period and year of 2014 was identified as a period of optimal performance after its periodic dry dock repair. According to verified results for Beaufort scales of 2, 3 and 4, the vessel exhibited an average speed loss of 2.2% due to wind and wave effects for a Froude number of 0.15 while its greatest speed loss was observed at angles of 30‒60° relative to its longitudinal axis. The results were finally used to develop a methodology for estimating fuel consumption of Salina and 3 other sister-ships, during future voyages, in the fleet of the National Iranian tanker company.

Since the start of COVID-19 and its growth into an uncontrollable pandemic, the spread of diseases through airports has become a serious health problem around the world. This study presents an algorithm to determine the risk of spread in airports and air routes. Graphs are applied to model the air transport network and Dijkstra’s algorithm is used for generating routes. Fuzzy logic is applied to evaluate multiple demographics, health, and transport variables and identify the level of spread in each airport. The algorithm applies a Markov chain to determine the probability of the arrival of an infected passenger with the COVID-19 virus to an airport in any country in the world. The results show the optimal performance of the proposed algorithm. In addition, some data are presented that allow for the application of actions in health and mobility policies to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

Research so far indicates that gut microbiome and diet interactions influence obesity, diabetes, host immunity, and brain function. The ability of athletes to perform to optimum for a more extended time, as well as the ability to resist, withstand, recover from, and have immunity to fatigue, injury depends on the genetic factor, age, sex, training history, psychological factors, mode, intensity and frequency of training and their interactions with the external dietary components. However, recent evidence indicates that the gut microbiome may also potentially influence the development of endurance in response to the type and composition of the external diet, including several food supplements. Thus, the gut microbiome has become another target in the athlete’s pursuit of optimal performance. This chapter discusses the effect of exercise on the gut microbiome, the interplay between dietary components and supplements on the gut microbiome, and its impact on endurance performance.
