In 2011, Gunn et al. published the discovery in a remote part of the western Arnhem Land plateau of a rock painting that closely resembles the most recent reconstructions of an extinct megafaunal bird, the dromornithid Genyornis newtoni. Characteristics of the painting distinguish it from depictions of other bird species and support its identification as G. newtoni: a deep convex bill, unlike the shallow bill of an emu or cassowary; a globular cranium and relatively thick neck; indication of a crop (emus and cassowaries lack crops); non-pendulous posture of the wing (unlike the pendulous posture of emus); the proportions of the pelvic limb showing long tibiotarsi and stout tarsometatarsi; the short, broad toes that appear to terminate in blunt claws; and a dorsal profile paralleling that of reconstructed dromornithids and unlike an emu or any species of cassowary, in which the vertex of the back is more anterior. The several points of special resemblance between the painting and reconstructions of the extinct bird based on paleontological evidence led Gunn et al. (2011:10) to conclude, ‘on the basis of probability the painting is indeed a representation of Genyornis newtoni’. This finding brings a conundrum. If the painting is indeed a contemporaneous depiction of G. newtoni, it becomes the oldest painting known in the world, for the bird is thought to have become extinct around 50,000 +/- 5000 years ago (Miller et al. 1999; Roberts and Brook 2010; Roberts et al. 2001) or even earlier (see Grellet-Tinner et al. 2016). Or that timing for the extinction of Genyornis is wrong; or a relic population survived longer on the Arnhem Land plateau (e.g. Murray and Vickers-Rich 2004), perhaps until the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), which commenced around 25,000 years ago. And, as Gunn et al. (2011) acknowledged, there are still other alternatives. The painting might be of a ‘mythological’ animal: either one rooted in ancient memory of G. newtoni, as has been suggested for the ‘mihirung’ of southern Australian Aboriginal peoples (Vickers-Rich 1987) – although in societies without writing, social memory has not been found anywhere in the world to reliably extend in recognisable form over very long periods of time (cf. Bradley 2002) – or of a creature without a material counterpart that fortuitously resembled the fossil bird. The painting occurs on a vertical rock wall under a shallow overhang. Could the motif really have survived there since Pleistocene times, whether 25,000 or 50,000 years ago? And the painting shows a speared bird, so it could be the first evidence for the hunting of extinct megafauna in Australia. With these enigmas in mind, the Jawoyn Association asked us in 2010 to study the ‘Genyornis’ site, to investigate the age of the art and its archaeological and geomorphological context. Our major aims were to ask whether the painting dates, or theoretically could date, to the time of G. newtoni, or whether it must be more recent, and to uncover contextual ancient cultural information relating to the artworks and to occupation activities at the site in the past. Here, we present the results of these archaeological and geomorphological investigations along with a summary of the chemistry of the rock surface that houses the painting of the large bird thought by Gunn et al. (2011) to be of a Genyornis.

Abstract The red-billed quelea is a small weaver bird native to sub-Saharan Africa and renowned for its attacks on small-grain crops within Africa. It is the most numerous bird species in the world, with peak post-breeding population estimated at 1,500,000,000. The red-billed quelea is mainly granivorous, except when feeding its chicks insects or when eating insects prior to migration or breeding, and it relies on a supply of grass seeds to survive. When unable to find grass seeds or when opportunities arise, quelea will attack crops. It is a major pest throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa and can cause significant economical losses.

This paper shows t h a t given certain conditions it is perfectly feasible to study an earthquake that occurred three-quarters of a century ago in a remote part of the world. Also, it shows that there are many large earthquakes which, because of lack of interdisciplinary efforts to study such events, have remained hitherto little known or totally unknown. The case of the Silakhor earthquake revealed deficiencies in the determination of epicentres by ISS and Gutenberg; the difference between macroseismic and instrumental position for the Silakhor earthquake is 380 kilometres, a difference which lias caused a serious problem in the assessment of seisniicity of Iran. Accurate macroseismic d a t a may be used to minimize bias in t h e instrumental relocation of the larger events and to study source mechanisms. Untili this study was undertaken, the faulting associated with the Silakhor earthquake was totally unknown. Even more important t h a n the value of recent faulting for its significance in resolving ambiguities in t h e choice of the t r u e source parametres, is the information that can be gleaned from evidence for the mechanism of earthquakes that occurred long before t h e advent of modern seismology and in particular, for the pattern of recent tectonic activity.

AbstractTemporal and spatial scarcity of water in semi-arid and seasonal ecosystems often leads to changes in movements and behaviour of large vertebrates, and in the neotropics this dynamic is poorly understood due to logistical and methodological limitations. Here we used camera trapping to elucidate variation in patterns of seasonal use of waterholes and pathways by 10 large-mammal and four large-bird species in the dry forest of north-western Costa Rica. From 2011 to 2015, we deployed trail cameras at 50 locations, including waterholes and three types of pathway (roads, human trails and animal paths). We used Generalized Linear Models to evaluate the effect of location and seasonality on the rates at which independent photographs were taken. We found interacting effects of location and seasonality for the capuchin monkey (Cebus capucinus), the tiger heron (Trigrisoma mexicanum), the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and the tapir (Tapirus bairdii) suggesting that these species were the most influenced by waterholes during the dry season. Comparison of waterhole sites and specific types of pathways (roads, animal paths and human trails) showed that location influenced photo-capture rates of almost all species, suggesting a useful insight to avoid and account for bias in camera trap studies. Furthering our ecological understanding of seasonal water regimes and large vertebrates’ behaviours allow for better understanding of the consequences of climate change on them.

Abstract. The role of nutrients, such as phosphorus (P), and their impact on primary productivity and the fluctuations in atmospheric CO2 over glacial-interglacial periods are intensely debated. Suggestions as to the importance of P evolved from an earlier proposal that P actively participated in changing productivity rates and therefore climate change, to most recent ones that changes in the glacial ocean inventory of phosphorus were important but not influential if compared to other macronutrients, such as nitrate. Using new data coming from a selection of ODP sites, we analyzed the distribution of oceanic P sedimentary phases and calculate reactive P burial fluxes, and we show how P burial fluxes changed over the last glacial-interglacial period at these sites. Concentrations of reactive P are generally lower during glacial times, while mass accumulation rates (MAR) of reactive P show higher variability. If we extrapolate for the analyzed sites, we may assume that in general glacial burial fluxes of reactive P are lower than those during interglacial periods by about 8%, because the lack of burial of reactive P on the glacial shelf reduced in size, was apparently not compensated by burial in other regions of the ocean. Using the calculated changes in P burial, we evaluate their possible impact on the phosphate inventory in the world oceans. Using a simple mathematical approach, we find that these changes alone could have increased the phosphate inventory of glacial ocean waters by 17–40% compared to interglacial stages. Variations in the distribution of sedimentary P phases at the investigated sites seem to indicate that at the onset of interglacial stages, shallower sites experienced an increase in reactive P concentrations, which seems to point to P-richer waters at glacial terminations. All these findings would support the Shelf-Nutrient Hypothesis, which assumes that during glacial low stands nutrients are transferred from shallow sites to deep sea with possible feedback on the carbon cycle.

This synthesis of thirty-six sites (sixty cores with over 27 000 measurements) located around the world facilitates scientific research on the climate of the last 21 000 years ago obtained from oxygen isotope ( or delta-O-18) measurements. Oxygen isotopes in speleothem calcite record the influence of ambient temperature and the isotopic composition of the source water, the latter providing evidence of hydrologic variability and change. Compared to paleoclimate proxies from sedimentary archives, the age uncertainty is unusually small, around +/−100 years for the last 21 000-year interval. Using data contributed to the World Data Center (WDC) for Paleoclimatology, we have created consistently formatted data files for individual sites as well as composite dataset of annual to millennial resolution. These individual files also contain the chronology information about the sites. The data are useful in understanding hydrologic variability at local and regional scales, such as the Asian summer monsoon and the Intertropical Convergence Zone (as discussed in the underlying source publications), and should also be useful in understanding large-scale aspects of hydrologic change since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM).

The plight of indigenous birds on oceanic archipelagoes often makes depressing reading, as the author points out in his forthcoming book, Naturalized Mammals of the World. Habitat destruction by domestic stock and predation by accidentally introduced rats and mice are the major causes. In Bermuda this discouraging trend has been reversed by the successful rehabilitation of two species within the space of a quarter of a century.

It is not easy.– Ludwig WittgensteinIn this paper I argue that a comparison of English and Aboriginal conceptions of property yields insight into the ontologically specific grounds that inform institutionalized socio-cultural practices like property. Where the foundations of English conceptions of property are highly rationalistic, Aboriginal conceptions eschew categorization and are indicative of a highly nuanced and different way of understanding the worldliness of a human being. As such, a comparison of such conceptions becomes not simply a comparison of ways of owning and possessing, but a cross-cultural comparison of ways of relating to the world at large for what are ostensibly economic purposes.To argue this is to assume that there is much more going on within culture that is determinative of ways of being than to simply assume that all cultures share universal cultural traits. In this paper I therefore discuss some of the philosophical foundations that underlie Western conceptions of the human’s relation to the world as embodied in principles of property law, as well as looking at the philosophical significance of that view. I also look at the way various Aboriginal peoples in Canada understand their own relationship to the world-at-large as it is expressed in what they understand as the property regimes of their society.
