The article describes research and teaching activity of Denis Alexandrovich Gavrilov, Candidate of Biological Sciences, senior researcher with Soil Genesis Laboratory of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, who died suddenly died young on August 26, 2021. He was also and enthusiastic and a hardworking publishing editor of the research journal Soils and Environment. The article briefly reviews of D.A. Gavrilov’s major publications presenting the results of his soil and combined soil and archeology studies, which he conducted both individually or in collaboration with other scientists from research and education institutions in Russia and Kazakhstan.

The article gives biographical background and a brief outline of the research carried out by the Doctor of Biological Sciences A.A. Tanasienko, who for more than 10 years worked as Deputy Director for Research in the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. For more than 15 years he worked as the Head of the Laboratory of soil-physical processes in the Institute and became one of the leading experts in soil erosion studies in Siberia.

The article presents some biographical data and brief description of research activity of Professor, Doctor of Biological Sciences Victor Petrovich Panfilov, an organizer and the first head of the laboratory of soil physics of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, who significantly contributed into fundamental and applied studies of soil physical and meliorative properties and regimes in Siberia.

The article gives the main biographic information of the Doctor of Biological Sciences Iya Leonidovna Klevenskaya, who was the initiator and the head of the Laboratory of Soil Microbiology of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. She worked in academic science for 40 years, focusing her research on microbial physiology and ecology in soils of Siberia.

Abstract Elżbieta M. Walerian, Ph.D., D.Sc., a retired employee of the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IPPT PAN), passed away after a serious illness, on the 26th December 2013. She was one of the scientific leaders in the Section of Environmental Acoustics of IPPT PAN and her career, educational and organizational activities were inseparably linked with the acoustics. Elżbieta Walerian was born on August 9th 1950 in Poznań. She graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, receiving her Master of Science degree in the environmental acoustics in 1973. Five years later, under the supervision of Professor Ignacy Malecki, she obtained her PhD title, in the physical acoustics, in IPPT PAN in Warsaw. In 1979 she began working at the Section of Environmental Acoustics of IPPT PAN, where she dealt with the diffraction of acoustic waves and a description of the sound field produced by vehicles moving in an urban area.

The article is dedicated to Pavel A. Stunzhas, a highly qualified specialist in the field of Marine Hydrochemistry, a graduate from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. He was a Senior Researcher at the Laboratory of Biohydrochemistry at the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology Russian Academy of Sciences, PhD on Physics and Mathematics sciences. July 2, 2020, he celebrated his 80th birthday, but by the will of fate and COVD'19, he suddenly passed away on October 29 of this year. He worked at the Institute of Oceanology for 46 years – from the first to the last days of his life.

This article is devoted to an outline of the research and teaching activity of Professor Andrzej Jaczewski (1929–2020) at the Faculty of Education of the University of Warsaw. The author describes his commitment to lectures on school hygiene and extending the educational programme of educators to include sexology issues, as well as the creation of the Department of Biomedical Foundations of Development and Sexology at the Faculty of Education of the University of Warsaw. The author of the article presents Prof. Jaczewski’s publication achievements and his activity as vice-dean of the Faculty of Education, as well as his contribution to the organisation of cooperation with the University of Cologne. The text is enhanced with the author’s memories of Prof. Jaczewski from the 1980s, when the author was a student.
