This chapter has the objective to analyze the implications that the new geography framework of urban agro ecology has on urban planning. It departs from the assumption that the new geography is a theoretical framework for the for the analysis of the economic, social, political, ecological, technological, research, and science based on the interrelationships between urban agro ecology and urban planning. The methodology is based in a constructive analysis of the reviewed theoretical and empirical literature to infer a model based on the construct of the new geography. Finally, it is concluded that urban planning of local governments can formulate and implement strategies based on the new geography framework in urban agro ecology to proving incentives in new urban developments and to benefit disadvantaged communities.

The aim of this study is to identify the environmental fragilities on the city of Monte Alto-SP and propose a land use zoning for better environmental management in this region. For this, it was used the methodological proposals of Ross (1994), which addresses potential and emerging fragilities, of Ross and Fierz (2017), which updates some concepts and classifications, and of Gouveia and Ross (2019), which conducts a integration of areas subject to flooding with the proposal of environmental fragility. As a result, it was observed that the class with the greatest predominance was the strong, occupying about 92.29% and 73.58% of the total area of potential and emerging fragility, respectively. To validate the accuracy of the methodology, the coefficient of linear determination (R²) between the obtained emergent fragility degrees and the occurrence of erosive processes present in the respective degrees was used. The erosions were made available by the Technological Research Institute – IPT (2012) and some additional ones were registered by the authors from Google Earth. The determined coefficient of linear determination is 0.6359, which means that the method used developed satisfactory results for the studied location. Finally, environmental zoning was proposed based on land use proposals to improve the environmental management and quality in the region, as the research shows a high environmental fragility in the municipality of Monte Alto-SP.

Solid state energy conversion using thermoelectric (TE) phenomena has attracted great interest in power generation by using waste heat and active cooling/heating from electricity. Since first observation of the Seebeck and Peltier effect in the early 1820s, the TE phenomena has been applied in limited fields due to difficulties during the last two centuries in controling performance, which is related to both the carrier and the phonon transport behaviors. This article briefly introduces not only technological research issues for universal use of thermoelectrics but also the latest strategy for applications from the viewpoint of materials.

This article considers the role of surveillance within security concerns related to the Arctic in Canada and North America. More pointedly, it examines how surveillance contributes towards situational awareness and the current emphasis on technological research and development to meet current and future security requirements. The article argues that Canada’s focus on surveillance within the Arctic offers a flexible strategy that navigates the complex and evolving security environment in addition to the political and fiscal realities of our time. However, the article warns that emphasizing the role of novel technology within strategic considerations risks undermining sound policymaking as the potential for new technology to transform defensive capabilities remains speculative. The article illustrates this approach to security by analyzing Canada’s Arctic surveillance capabilities and goals under the All Domain Situational Awareness (ADSA) program. Further, it links Canada’s efforts to North American defence by theoretically examining the role of surveillance in the Strategic Homeland Integrated Ecosystem for Layered Defense (SHIELD) concept and the recent NORAD/USNORTHCOM strategic outlook.
