July 2, 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Andrei S. Monin, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (since 1972), Director of the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1965–1987, a world-famous outstanding Soviet and Russian scientist in the field of Earth and Ocean sciences. The article highlights the main fundamental scientific results obtained by this scientist as a result of his many years of research on a wide range of problems of hydromechanics, dynamics of the earth's interior, planetology, atmospheric physics, and first of all, gives a high assessment of his capital contribution to domestic and world oceanology.

This autobiographical note was submitted to the Editorial board of the Journal «Oceanological Research» by close relatives of the veteran and honorary worker of the Navy, the legendary sea captain Nikolai Vadimovich Apekhtin, who for more than 30 years headed the research vessels of the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences: «Academician Kurchatov», «Vityaz», «Dmitry Mendeleev» and «Academician Ioffe». The materials were handed over shortly before his death, which took place on 10/30/2021 in Kaliningrad. This article publishes the memoirs about Andrei Sergeevich Monin – an outstanding scientist in geophysics, oceanologist, public figure, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences (1956), professor (1963), academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2000), director of the of the Shirshov Institute of oceanology of RAS in 1965–1987. A.S. Monin was not only a brilliant scientist (theoretician and practitioner), not only a talented leader and organizer of scientific research, which made it possible to bring oceanology in our institute, and in the country as a whole, to a new – higher – level, but also an interesting, outstanding person. Personality with a capital letter. And we, the authors of this article, are proud that we knew Andrei Sergeevich personally and worked with him.

This memorable article is the memories of Andrei Sergeevich Monin (1921–2007) – an outstanding scientist, geophysicist, oceanologist, mathematician, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (since 1972), academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (since 2000), the former director of Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1965–1987. A.S. Monin possessed the broadest horizons, the talent of an organizer and leader, as well as a powerful scientific intuition. All this allowed him to leave a bright mark both in Russian science and in the memory of everyone who worked and communicated with him.

The article tells about the buildings in which Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IO RAS) was previously and is now located. Historical information is given in detail, with a description of the design of the Institute building, the process of its construction and the results of the implementation of this bold and unusual architectural project for that time. The text of the article is accompanied by illustrations – old and modern photographs of the Institute and drawings. Part of the history of the Institute is captured in an excerpt from the book by P.A. Stunzhas “Institute of Oceanology: my Home and my Work” (2016). Information about the past, as well as the modern Institute and the project of a possible future building was prepared on the basis of official documents of the Institute.

The article is devoted to the 90th anniversary of the prominent Russian oceanographer and former senior researcher at the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Science Boris Alexandrovich Tareev, (1931–1972). A brief information about the main fields and results of his creative scientific activity is given. The paper tells about his study of deep density convection in the ocean, as well as hydrophysics and hydrodynamics of internal gravity waves, and at last the baroclinic instability of ocean currents. The metaphorical allocation of three remarkable happenings in the life history of the hero of the day, that conventionally called Tareev's Paradoxes, enables authors of the paper to better show and appreciate the contribution made by B.A. Tareev into the ocean science and present the role of this scientist in the history of oceanography in the 20th century more substantively.
