The wetlands located at the periphery of Jimma town, southwestern Ethiopia, have critical roles in providing a range of ecological and socio-economic benefits, yet they are subject to increasing anthropogenic disturbances, notably through agriculture, settlement, intensive grazing and brick-making. This study assessed the ecological status of these wetlands, and examined the scale of the human disturbances that local communities might impose on them. Macroinvertebrate communities, water quality parameters, and human disturbance scores were assessed. Except for electrical conductivity and water temperature, no significant difference (P < 0.05) was found in physico-chemical parameters between the sampled sites. Nitrate was the only parameter that correlated with significant influence on species richness of the sampled macroinvertebrates. A total of 10 metrics were used to generate the index of biotic integrity (IBI). This IBI was then tested based on macroinvertebrate data collected. Ways of assessing and evaluating the existing ecological status of the wetlands are discussed in the context of physico-chemical parameters, IBI based on macroinvertebrates and human disturbance scales. Water quality characteristics, MPN index/100ml, and zooplankton of sacred Devak stream, Udhampur were analyzed during February, 2010 to January, 2011. Various water quality parameters showed a well marked seasonal variation including MPN index/100 ml which remained above 240 during all the observations. Zooplanktons comprising of 46 species showed qualitative dominance of protozoa (33 species) followed by rotifera (7 species), annelida (2 species) and insecta (1 species), water nematoda, turbellaria (1 species) and cysts. Zooplankton was qualitatively and quantitatively poor/absent during monsoon floods (June to September) and was diversified and rich during February to May. Comparison of water utility parameters and MPN count/100 ml with national and international agencies suggested that water of this stream was not fit for consumption.

Groundwater is the major source of municipal and private potable water supply for meeting the drinking, domestic, agricultural and industrial requirements on man around the world. The cost of analyzing water quality in the laboratory to ascertain its potability is usually high and sometimes not available. Groundwater samples were collected from fifty (50) spatially referenced bore well locations in Warri and its environs in the dry and wet seasons (November 2019 to January 2020) in the study area. The water samples were analyzed for twenty-six (26) physical, chemical and bacteriological parameters both in the field and laboratory in line with APHA standard procedures for testing water and waste water inorder to evaluate the status of potability of groundwater across Warri, Delta State Nigeria. The data analysis tool in Microsoft Excel was used to explore and study the interrelationship between some conservative parameters measured in the field (pH, EC, TDS, and DO) as independent variables and some cations, anions and heavy metals (Na, Mg, Ca, HCO3, SO4 Cl, Fe, Cd, Cr, Cu and Pb) analysed in the laboratory as dependent variables. The results obtained from the parameters analysed insitu in the field which are cheap to perform and easily affordable were used to check and evaluate and the inter-relationships with some cations, anions and heavy metals. Highly correlated water quality parameters were determined by correlation coefficient (R) values obtained from correlation matrix and related by Regression equations (models). The regression models can be adopted to predict the concentration of these cations, anions and heavy metals before the rigorous laboratory analysis, to serve as a quick check for concentration of most disease-causing pollutants and to save time, money and resources, especially the near absence of AAS for analysing heavy metals in a good number of laboratories. The regression models developed in the study can be used for monitoring the water quality parameters by knowing the concentration of independent parameters obtained in the field alone. There is a relationship between variables which show that one variable actually causes changes in another variable. It was observed that multiple regression models can predict most parameters at 5% level of significance. Significantly positive correlation at 1 and 5% was found between many parameters. This technique studied and calculated the correlation coefficients between various physico-chemical parameters of drinking water and provided an excellent device for the calculation of parameter values within realistic degree of accuracy. The results proved to be easiest, useful, and rapid means for monitoring of water quality with the help of systematic calculations of correlation coefficient. It is recommended to treat groundwater prior to domestic use.

The experiment was conducted in two cement made cisterns for a four-week period. Important physico-chemical water quality parameters and harvesting time in periphyton production were studied. During the study period, four groups of phytoplankton and two groups of zooplankton were observed. Among phytoplankton, Chlorophyceae was the most dominant having 62% Chlorella followed by Bacillariophyceae having 15% Navicula and 12% Cyclotella, Cyanophyceae having 5% Oscillatoria and 2% Anabaena and Euglenophyceae having 2% Euglena and 1% Phacus. The grand averages of periphyton mass production were 0.569 (± 0.242) mg DM/cm2 in C-1. There was highly significant (p<0.05) variation (F = 14.692) between C-1 and C-2 in respect of periphyton production. Cistern-1 was identified as more productive due to its favourable water quality parameters, i.e., water temperature of 24.6 to 28.3 ºC, Secchi disc reading of 18 to 33 cm, dissolved oxygen of 4.67 to 9.55 mg/L, pH of 9.12 to 10.18, NO3-N of 3.58 to 10.90 mg/L, NH3-N of 0.26 to 0.40 mg/L, PO4-P of 7.5 to 3.4 mg/L, conductivity 0.412 to 0.719 Ms. Third addition of substrate, that means 18- 19th day was identified as the optimum harvesting time of periphyton production.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/pa.v23i1-2.16565Progress. The water samples collected from the selected pond were analyzed at specific time intervals in the month of February, April and June in year 2020. The parameter studied were namely Temperature, pH, DO, TDS, TSS, Alkalinity, Hardness and Chloride. The study showed that the Shatabdi pond is unfit for drinking, bathing or household purposes. The result obtained in the present investigation revealed that the Shatabdi pond is polluted.

Abundant as it may seem in Nigeria, access to clean and potable water is a great challenge. Hence the reason for determination of the physico-chemical properties of the groundwater in Agbowo community in Ibadan, Oyo state Southwestern Nigeria for domestic uses. Water samples collected from thirty-four (34) shallow wells with varying depths were subjected to chemical analysis. The water quality parameters were analyzed in accordance to standard methods. The groundwater analysis reviewed includes pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), others include Ca<sup>2+</sup>, Mg<sup>2+</sup>, K<sup>+</sup> Na<sup>+</sup>, Fe<sup>2+</sup>, NO<sub>3</sub>, Cl<sup>-</sup> SO<sub>4</sub><sup>2-</sup> and HCO<sub>3</sub><sup>- </sup>The results indicated that the parameters analyzed have some falling within the limits and some above the maximum permissible limits in accordance to Nigeria Industrial Standard (NIS) and World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for drinking water. In general, the data revealed that maxima and minima concentrations of the priority physico-chemical water quality parameters examined in the thirty-four (34) water points were mostly within the Target Water Quality Range (TWQR) for domestic use with little exceptions at some points. However, high nitrate concentrations and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) above the permissible limits in some of the well water sampled are causes for serious concern. Poor construction, lack of maintenance, proximity to sewage tank and stream, as well as indiscriminate dumping of refuse are suggested as the major causes of this development. The overall implication of this observation call for sustenance and improved water resource management strategy for the area in order to prevent the deterioration of the water sources quality, which may pose associated health risks and environmental hazards.
