Metaheuristic optimisation algorithms have been increasingly used because of their superior ability to find globally optimal solutions. Theoretically, these algorithms are very powerful and can be applied in all types of optimisation problems. However, in reality, their performance depends on the characteristics of each optimisation problem class. In addition, the complexity of an algorithm is an important factor affecting its application in specific design problems. In this paper, the Rao optimisation algorithm, one of the newest metaheuristic algorithms, is presented for the optimisation algorithm of steel frame structures. The advantage of the Rao algorithm is that it is quite simple with few parameters, so engineers can easily apply it in daily design tasks. A nonlinear inelastic analysis is used to consider the nonlinear behaviors of the steel structure. A two-story space steel frame is studied. The results show that Rao-1 is more stable and converged more quickly but easily trapped in local solutions than Rao-2 and Rao-4. Rao-4 is more efficient in global search but its stability is less than other algorithms. Keywords:nonlinear inelastic analysis, optimisation, Rao algorithm, steel frame.

A second-order inelastic analysis of semirigid connection steel frame structures is developed. Therein, shearing deformation and axial force simultaneously are considered. A new stability function considered shearing deformation and axial force simultaneously is proposed and the analysis methods for steel structure of semirigid connection based on the structural ultimate bearing capacity are established. The calculatical programe of second-order inelastic analysis semirigid connection steel frame structures is compiled. The numerical examples of steel frames for semirigid connection are analysed using the second-order inelastic analysis in the paper. Load–displacements predicted by the proposed analysis compare well with those given by other approaches. The analysis results show that the proposed method is suitable for adoption in practice.

The problem of estimation of fire resistance of steel frame structures with intumescent coatings is considered. It implies that both physical properties of a covering (its thickness and structure) and mechanical properties of a metal structure change critically at heating. All above changes should be considered to maintain the standard values of fire resistance of a construction at calculation. Usually, known technical characteristics of fire resistance of intumescent coverings are used for estimation of fire resistance of steel structures with intumescent coverings. Importance of taking into account the influence of strength loss time at heating of a steel structure on calculation of fire resistance limit of system “intumescent fireproof coating steel structure” is shown in the article. On an example of calculation of heating time to the critical temperature of steel columns and beams protected by intumescent coating, it is shown that own heating time of steel structures before they lose strength makes 10 to 16 % from a settlement limit of fire resistance. This fact should be considered at the forecast of fire resistance of steel frame structures with intumescent coatings.

Taking the structure construction cost as the optimized goal, the optimization design is carried on the steel frame structure considering the material plastic, under the explosion load. According to the prevailing steel structure design codes GB50017-2002, the model of steel frame structures is established. The results show that the theory and calculation method is reasonable, which will have a guide in the future.

The aim of the work is to present the trend of the advancement of steel design code and practical approach of steel frame design from the current AISC-LFDR to the advanced analysis. As the trend of steel frame analysis method is from first-order elastic analysis to second-order inelastic analysis which is an advanced analysis. Methods. In this paper the comparison between the load - displacement curves of several structural analysis methods is presented. Case studies are considered to analyze by different methods and comparison of practical advanced analysis method with PROKON software. The case studies includes a two-story one bay steel frame and four bays of twelve-stories steel frame. The results of first-order elastic, elastic buckling, second-order and nonlinear analyses of an unbraced frame are compared and their difference is presents. The proposed software for advanced methods demonstrates the accuracy and the computational efficiency in predicting the nonlinear analysis response of steel frame structures.

The composite of multi-layer steel structure module and steel frame, as an important design form in Chinese house construction, is widely used in the architectural design of houses. The multi-layer steel structure module and steel frame composite building structure are different from the traditional. This kind of building mechanism adopts the prefabricated type, which has the advantages of fast construction speed and few limiting factors, and plays a very important guiding role in modern building construction. Based on this, this article will analyze and compare the similarities and differences between steel structure modular buildings and traditional steel frame structures, and explore the design of multi-layer steel structure modules and steel frame composite building structures, hoping to be helpful to relevant people.
