This review is directed at preventive health professionals, anatomic pathologists and technicians to focus their attention on the rapidly growing field of safe formalin practices. An updated overview of the most recent improvements in preventive measures versus formaldehyde (FA) in the anatomic pathology laboratories (APL) is provided. The occupational hygienist role and the required knowledge for a modern and clear occupational exposure assessment are described. Real-time, in-continuous, commercial analyzers for repeated FA exposure assessment are considered to evaluate technical changes in air monitoring programs, introduced to mitigate FA emissions, in compliance with the adopted limit values. To better choose the adequate instrumentation, the main features of each FA monitoring instrument recently introduced on the market are listed. Moreover, the main features of the modern workflow setting in APL are summarized. A computer-based scientific and non-scientific reports search by key-words was performed on PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar and Google Patents databases, querying the following topics: i) grossing workstation for ergonomic layout, ii) commercially available direct reading tools to measure formalin, iii) real-time, in-continuous FA monitoring instruments for sale. This review represents a useful tool to summarize the technical requirements and expert know-how necessary to minimize FA emissions and produce an exhaustive FA assessment in the APL.

Sensor technology has enabled the development of portable low-cost monitoring kits that might supplement many applications in conventional monitoring stations. Despite the sensitivity of electrochemical gas sensors to environmental change, they are increasingly important in monitoring polluted microenvironments. The performance of a compact diffusion-based Personal Exposure Kit (PEK) was assessed for real-time gaseous pollutant measurement (CO, O3, and NO2) under typical environmental conditions encountered in the subtropical city of Hong Kong. A dynamic baseline tracking method and a range of calibration protocols to address system performance were explored under practical scenarios to assess the performance of the PEK in reducing the impact of rapid changes in the ambient environment in personal exposure assessment applications. The results show that the accuracy and stability of the ppb level gas measurement is enhanced even in heterogeneous environments, thus avoiding the need for data post-processing with mathematical algorithms, such as multi-linear regression. This establishes the potential for use in personal exposure monitoring, which has been difficult in the past, and for reporting more accurate and reliable data in real-time to support personal exposure assessment and portable air quality monitoring applications.

ABSTRACT Objective: to identify the knowledge produced on the health of low-income older women. Method: an integrative review was conducted in February 2016 on the SCOPUS, CINAHL, MEDLINE, LILACS, EMBASE, WEB OF SCIENCE databases, and in the SciELO journals directory. After the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, 24 articles were selected. Results: the knowledge produced comprises two main themes: "health in face of economic adversities" and "reciprocity in social support between low-income older women and their social network". Final considerations: health professionals, especially nurses, should be attentive to aspects related to social determinants and the health of low-income older women, highlighting the fact that they are not always the recipients of care.

Purpose – This paper aims to present a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of studies in Brazil with applications of multivariate control charts indexed in journals on the Web of Science. Design/methodology/approach – The following steps were carried out: a detailed synthesis was performed on the general characteristics of the corpus, co-citation and collaboration networks analyzed; and a co-occurrence of terms in the text corpus was verified. A Systematic Literature Review was carried out using the protocols set out by Biolchini et al. (2007), Kitchenham (2004) and Tranfield, Denyer and Smart (2003). Papers were selected from the Web of Science database, and after applying filters, results for 29 articles were given to compose the corpus. Findings – A tendency was found for an increase in publications, along with more international research on the issue. The journal most used for publication was the Microchemical Journal. This analysis provided relevant authors for research in this area: Harold Hotelling, Douglas Montgomery, and John Frederick MacGregor. Important Brazilian researchers were highlighted who work mainly in the pharmaceutical and biodiesel industry. Originality/value – No articles were found that had carried out a Systematic Literature Review of Brazilian research on multivariate control charts. The main contributions to this manuscript related to an increase in scientific know-how in the area of multivariate and bibliometric analysis. Keywords - Multivariate Control Charts. Abstract. The performance of a low-cost partially integrated cantilever-based airborne nanoparticle (NP) detector (CANTOR-1) is evaluated in terms of its real-time measurement and robustness. The device is used for direct reading of exposure to airborne carbon engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) in indoor workplaces. As the main components, a miniaturized electrostatic aerosol sampler and a piezoresistive resonant silicon cantilever mass sensor are employed to collect the ENPs from the air stream to the cantilever surfaces and to measure their mass concentration, respectively. Moreover, to realize a real-time measurement, a frequency tracking system based on a phase-locked loop (PLL) is built and integrated into the device. Long-term ENP exposure and a wet ultrasonic cleaning method are demonstrated to estimate the limitation and extend the operating lifetime of the developed device, respectively. By means of the device calibrations performed with a standard ENP monitoring instrument of a fast mobility particle sizer (FMPS, TSI 3091), a measurement precision of ENP mass concentrations of < 55% and a limit of detection (LOD) of < 25 μg m−3 are obtained.
