Abstract In thermal spraying, Fe-based alloys are often applied for relatively thick and inexpensive coatings. The main advantage of the Fe-based alloy coatings is their high ductility as compared to ceramic and hardmetal coatings. Other advantages such as high toughness, easy machineability and satisfactory corrosion resistance are characteristic of Fe-based alloys. The wear resistance is not outstanding, but nevertheless acceptable for a large number of applications. A further improvement of the wear resistance can be achieved by reinforcing the Fe-based alloy coatings, e.g. by addition of nitrogen to the spraying powder.

Purpose This paper aims to improve the tribocorrosion properties of 316L, thus WC/Ni60 coated 316L was prepared by thermal spraying technique. Design/methodology/approach Composition and microstructure of WC/Ni60 coating was investigated, and tribological properties of 316 L and WC/Ni60 coating were studied under dry sliding, deionized water and artificial seawater. Findings The results showed that WC/Ni60 coating was lamellar structure, and the phase composition consisted of γ-Ni solid solution, carbides and borides. Furthermore, the hardness and corrosion resistance of 316 L in static seawater and wear resistance in dry sliding were improved by WC reinforced nickel-based coating. Furthermore, tribocorrosion results demonstrated that wear resistance of WC/Ni60 coating was also significantly better than 316 L, especially for higher load at artificial seawater. The reason can be attributed to the fact that the passive film of WC/Ni60 coating consisted of tungsten carbide, Ni(OH)2 and FeOOH for WC/Ni60 coating and only FeOOH for 316 L. Originality/value According to this study, it can be concluded that WC phases acted as a role in resisting the wear damages. Meanwhile, Ni-based materials performed well in corrosion resistance. Thus, the combined-effect Ni-based alloys and WC phases in WC/Ni60 coating showed better tribocorrosion performance than 316 L.

Thermally sprayed iron-based coatings are being widely studied as alternative solution to conventional hardmetal (cermet) and Ni-based coatings for wear and corrosion applications in order to reduce costs, limit environmental impact and enhance the health safety. The aim of the present work is to study the cavitation erosion behaviour in distilled water and the corrosion properties in acidic solution of four high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) sprayed Fe-based composite coatings. Fe-Cr-Ni-B-C powder was selected for its good sliding wear properties. In addition, a powder composition with an addition of Mo was studied in order to increase the corrosion resistance whereas additions of 20 wt. % and 40 wt. % WC-12Co as blended powder mixtures were investigated in order to increase wear resistance. Improvement of coating properties was significant with the advanced powder compositions. Dense coating structures with low porosity were detected with microstructural characterization. In addition, good cavitation wear resistance was achieved. The cavitation resistance of customized Fe-based coating with Mo addition was reported to be twice as high as that of conventional Ni-based and WC-CoCr coatings. The corrosion properties of HVOF Fe-based coatings were also evaluated by studying electrochemical behaviour in order to analyse their potential to use as corrosion barrier coatings.
