Background: Term infants can be categorized into 3 sub-groups: early term (37w0d to 38w6d), full term (39w0d to 40w6d), and late term (41w0d and beyond). However, the fatty acid composition among the 3 groups of term infants has not been investigated. The association between fatty acid composition and gestational period of term infants in Japan is unclear. Methods: We assessed the fatty acid composition of maternal erythrocyte membranes in the third trimester and of cord erythrocyte membranes at birth in 212 healthy term Japanese infants using data from a prospective hospital-based cohort study. Results: In maternal erythrocyte membranes, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) levels and omega-3 index were significantly higher in the late-term group than in the early-term group. In cord erythrocyte membranes, DHA levels were not significantly different between the 3 groups; late-term infants showed significantly higher DHA/arachidonic acid (ARA) and lower 20: 3n-6 and ARA levels compared to early-term infants. Gestational period positively correlated with the DHA status in maternal and cord erythrocyte membranes. Conclusions: Fatty acid composition in maternal and cord erythrocyte membranes varies between early-, full-, and late-term infants, and the greater gestational period may contribute to the relatively high n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids status in term infants. Furthermore, maternal DHA status in the third semester directly correlates with gestational period in pregnant Japanese women.

Increasing global temperatures are expected to increase the risk of extinction of various species due to acceleration in the pace of shifting climate zones. Nevertheless, there is no information on the physicochemical properties of membrane lipids that enable the adaptation of the algae to different climatic zones. The present work aimed to compare fatty acid composition and thermal transitions of membrane lipids from green macroalgae Ulva lactuca harvested in the Sea of Japan and the Adriatic Sea in summer. U. lactuca inhabiting the Adriatic Sea had bleached parts of thalli which were completely devoid of chloroplast glycolipids. The adaptation to a warmer climatic zone was also accompanied by a significant decrease in the ratio between unsaturated and saturated fatty acids (UFA/SFA) of membrane lipids, especially in bleached thalli. Hence, bleaching of algae is probably associated with the significant decrease of the UFA/SFA ratio in glycolipids. The decreasing ratio of n-3/n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) was observed in extra-plastidial lipids and only in the major glycolipid, non-lamellar monogalactosyldiacylglycerol. The opposite thermotropic behavior of non-lamellar and lamellar glycolipids can contribute to maintenance of the highly dynamic structure of thylakoid membranes of algae in response to the increasing temperatures of climatic zones.

Twenty castrated male Iberian pigs were divided into two groups of 10 pigs each according to the experimental diet received daily during the fattening period in confinement (acorn fed ad libitum or 4 kg of a formulated diet rich in C18:1 n—9). Dietary effects on performance, carcass characteristics and backfat, intramuscular, and liver fatty acid composition were assessed. Pigs fed only with acorns ate less, leading to a lower growth performance and carcass quality than pigs fed the formulated diet. Pigs fed acorns had lower C16:0 proportions in outer, inner, and subinner subcutaneous backfat layers. The C18:1 n—9 proportions in the inner and subinner subcutaneous backfat layers were higher in pigs fed acorns than in those fed the formulated diet. Pigs fed acorns had higher C18:2 n—6 proportion than those fed the formulated diet in outer subcutaneous backfat layer. The diet did not affect outer, inner, and subinner subcutaneous backfat melting points. Except a higher C18:0 in intramuscular fat polar lipids and higher C16:1 n—9 in the liver polar lipid fraction in pigs fed acorns, the diet had no significant effect on intramuscular and liver fatty acid composition.
