A new species of bristletails of the genus Petrobiellus (Microcoryphia: Machilidae) from Sakhalin

Petrobiellus sachalinensis sp. nov. from the northwest of Sakhalin Island (Russia) is described and illustrated. It is compared with the three other known species of the genus, P. takunagae Silvestri, 1943 from Honshu Island (Japan), P. curvistylis Uchida, 1954 from Hachijo-jima Island (Japan), and P. kusakini Kaplin, 1980 from Simushir Island (Russia). The new species can be distinguished from the congeners by the colour of body and scales, by distribution of pigment, by colour and shape of paired ocelli, and by structure of compound eyes, maxillary palps, legs, urites, and ovipositor.

The genus Odontopsen Tsuneki was erected by Tsuneki (1964) as a subgenus of the genus Psen Latreille, 1796. Bohart and Menke (1976) raised it to an independent genus. The type species, O. hanedai (Tsuneki, 1964) was found in the Konsei-Pass Nikko, at about 2100 m altitude, in the mountains of central Honshu Island, Japan. No other species of this genus was found in the following almost half a century.

A new species of Leptohyphes Eaton (Ephemerotera: Leptohyphidae) is described, diagnosed and illustrated from nymphs collected in the Pantepui region in Southeastern Venezuela. Leptohyphes kukenan sp. nov. is similar to Leptohyphes populus Allen because they share a unique character for the genus: male compound eyes are divided. Other unique characters for the new species include a plesiomorphic gill structure, with imbricated ventral lamellae, and paired subapical denticles on tarsal claw. The new species show a unique combination of characters that distinguish it from L. populus and all other species of Leptohyphes: fore and hind margin of femora with spines on strong elevated sockets, part of body and legs covered by small pale spots, tarsal claws with 4–5 marginal denticles and a subapical pair of submarginal denticles, pronotum with large rounded lateral projection, hind wing pads absent in female, gill formula 8/7/7/4/1, operculate gill with imbricated ventral lobes, and gill V without ventral extension on dorsal lamella.

In the present work a new species of Homoeoneuria is described based on nymphs and adults from Southeastern Brazil. Based on cladistics, the new species belongs to the subgenus Homoeoneuria.s.s. Homoeoneuria (H). watu sp. n., besides being the second species of the genus reported from South America, is the first representative of the subgenus from the region. The new species can be distinguished from the other described species of the genus by the following combination of characters: In the adult stage, (1) pronotum with prominent posteromedian pale yellow spot almost reaching anterior margin; (2) abdominal color pattern; (3) shape of penes. In the nymph, (1) head heavily washed with brownish-orange between compound eyes and ocelli; (2) antennal pedicels with short, thick setae; (3) small paired tubercles present on vertex and anterior margin of pronotum; (4) galea-lacinia of maxillae with submarginal row of 20–21 long, spinous setae; (5) abdominal color pattern. Comments on the biology of the new species are also provided.

Spirobranchus are abundant and diverse serpulids in tropical regions, with three species reported in Brazil, which occurrence is questionable, due to their distant type localities. In the present work, we describe a new species of Spirobranchus from the Brazilian coast and report the other species of the genus occurring off Brazilian shoreline, based on specimens from different locations. Specimens were collected in the states of Alagoas, Rio de Janeiro, and Santa Catarina, sorted and analyzed under a stereoscopic microscope. Then, the animals were anesthetized and subsequently fixed and prepared for the scanning electron microscopy. Specimens from the Caribbean and other Brazilian states were loaned from Museu Nacional of Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro and Universidade Federal de Alagoas. Morphological analyzes differentiated the three species and provided details of the morphology that can be used in the future taxonomy of the family. The species S. giganteus and S. tetraceros are more similar to each other, but can be readily separated based on the spiral radiolar crown in the former; S. minutus differs from the other species for the tube, operculum, and type of uncini. Spirobranchus lirianeae sp. nov. nests within S. kraussii-complex, with a concave operculum, absence of collar chaetae and paired compound eyes on the radioles, differing by being a solitary rather than a gregarious species, by the funnel-shaped operculum, fringed tonguelets and tube with single keel, distally pointed.

A new mayfly species, Sparsorythus buntawensis sp. nov. (Tricorythidae) from Layawan River of Mt. Malindang in Mindanao Island, the Philippines is described based on nymphal and adult morphologies. Sparsorythus buntawensis sp. nov. differ from all known members of the genus primarily in the deeper cleft of the hypopharynx and wider distance between compound eyes. Conspecific specimens of various life stages and sexes of this new mayfly were associated using DNA barcode.

We describe a new mite species from the Far East of Russia—Proctogastrolaelaps subsolanus Joharchi & Marchenko sp. nov. (Acari: Melicharidae). The new species was collected from soil-litter on the shores of the Tunaycha Lake and Sea of Okhotsk in Sakhalin Island. The important morphological characteristics of the genus Proctogastrolaelaps are revised.

Frontodendroidopsis pennyi, a new species of fire-colored beetle, is described from two males taken along the South Fork of Yamu He, 1.3 km east of Lao Shibali, northwestern Yunnan Province, China at an elevation of 2250 meters. This is the third described Frontodendroidopsis, the others being F. gibbiceps Young, also from China and the Japanese F. ocularis (Lewis). A similar cranial modification, large compound eyes, and strongly pectinate antennae place the new species in Frontodendroidopsis, although the antennal pedicel is shorter. Unlike F. gibbiceps the antennal insertions are not swollen and the frons is not carinate. The conspicuously emarginate fifth ventrite exhibited by males F. pennyi and F. gibbiceps distinguishes both of these species from F. ocularis.
