The main purpose of the study was to scrutinize the impact of student support services (SSS) on students’ development at the university level. The research design was quantitative in nature. The population of the study comprised of all university students of Islamabad. The simple random technique was used for the selection of the sample. The respondents were 80 students from those universities. Data were collected through a questionnaire and it has consisted of 56 items. Data were analyzed using statically mean, standard deviation and regression analysis of the impact of SSS on students’ development. The findings of study reveal that library services are adequate as compared to the availability of other support services and the results also reveal a strong relationship found among student support services and students’ development. It is recommended that the universities should make sure the availability of SSS.

While the university has dedicated considerable resources to student support services development, no comprehensive study offers knowledge about its availability, delivery, and effectiveness as perceived by the students. This study aims to provide information on student support services effectiveness as perceived by the 300 randomly selected students. Satisfaction level of students toward library services, internet and computer laboratory services, examination and test administration, and curriculum and content delivery were determined. Results revealed that most students are satisfied with library services, examination and test administration, and curriculum and content delivery of the university. However, they were demotivated about the internet and computer laboratory services. Its implication to policymakers and administrations is to provide more volition to enabling support services to benefit students welfare. The researchers recommend that the administration conduct an annual support services assessment to ensure that the current services effectively address the students needs and concerns. Moreover, the researchers recommend conducting a rigorous study on student support services to establish the results integrity and reliability. Using mixed-method research design and the inclusion of other support services areas will shed more light on its effectiveness.

This research aimed to measure the level of quality of academic advising and student support services from the perspective of students of Preparatory Year at the University of Najran. To achieve this, the descriptive analytical method was followed by administering a questionnaire consisting of (37 items) which were distributed over four dimensions (the academic advisor – the quality of the academic support for outstanding and struggling students – the quality of supporting talented and creative students – the quality of complaints and suggestions services). The sample consisted of (300) students selected from among the preparatory year at the University of Najran. The results indicated that the level of quality of academic advising services and student support services was (medium level) with a mean of (2.24). There were statistically significant differences at (α = 0.05) in the level of quality of academic services and student support services according to the level (first-second) in favor of the second level. There were also differences in the level of academic advising and student support services according to student status at (α = 0.05) in favor of struggling students. Results also indicated that there were no statistically significant differences in the students' assessment of the quality of services due to the gender variable. The study concluded that academic advising services need more efforts to improve the quality of services, especially in providing the necessary support to students, as well as the services for gifted and creative students, complaints and suggestions services. The study recommended the need to adopt clear mechanisms for academic advising and student support through which these services can be provided to all student categories and to evaluate the quality of these services. Student Support Services (SSS) is one of the largest federal TRIO programs designed to help disadvantaged students stay in and complete college. Through a longitudinal study of participants and comparable non participants, we examined the impact of SSS on retention. Data were collected through student questionnaires, institutional and program data, and students’ postsecondary transcripts. We found that SSS had a positive impact for all three measures of retention that were used, but the impact varied depending on which services students used and how much they participated. The results confirm that retention programs should address both academic and social integration on campus.

In 1999, Pace University was awarded a $1,000,000, three-year FIPSE Learning Anytime Anywhere Program (LAAP) Grant. The grant focuses on three areas: online testing, enhanced student support services, and mentoring. Funding from the LAAP grant has enabled the University to greatly enhance the student services that are provided to online students. The focus has been primarily on students who are within the NACTEL program, an online AS in Telecommunications degree offered to individuals working for Citizens Communications, Qwest, SBC and Verizon, and who are members of the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). FIPSE funding has enabled the University to extensively survey students in the program, by an outside evaluator. These surveys are all online, are tabulated instantly, and provide a steady stream of feedback to administrators and faculty who are involved in the program. In addition, FIPSE funding hasmade it possible to hire individuals who on a regular basis attend to how to best provide enhanced student support services for online students. As new ideas are developed, they are implemented as quickly as possible. This paper will present some of the research findings, and will also provide details about the changes to the NACTEL program that have occurred as a direct result.

Even though the concept of distance education emerged in the West/Europe, it is evident that the impact of this concept in terms of emergence of distance education institutions, student enrolment, and utilization of a variety of media are quite predominant in the context of Indian subcontinent especially India. The chapter traces briefly the history and growth of distance education in India. Various facets of student support are discussed followed by how various modes of ICT are employed as a part of student support. This chapter also examines the best practices adopted and emerging trends of students support by open universities in India. It also examines the role ICT has played and the future trends the ICT would enable effective student support.
