Collaboration amongst stakeholders in a construction project plays a significant role in managing and completing a project successfully. It specifically helps in interface management amongst the stakeholders. Among the various aspects of collaboration, there are two key factors that predominant. Firstly, the psychological factors that define a person as a natural collaborator, and secondly, the project-level enablers that determine a collaborative project. Therefore, in this study, two inductive theories are developed- one for psychological factors and another for project-level enablers of collaboration. This study aims to identify the key psychological factors and project enablers associated with collaboration and develop a conceptual framework to measure collaboration in a construction project. The workflow of the conceptual framework is developed in the first part of the research, and the input requirements are quantified. Robust hypothesis testing methodology is adopted to identify the key psychological factors and project enablers. Hypotheses testing yields three specific psychological factors for defining a person as a natural collaborator, and six enablers are essential for facilitating project collaboration. These results are used as input parameters in the derived conceptual framework to measure the level of collaboration in a construction project.

Many interfaces typically exist in the construction phase of a project. Since project participants usually fail to share interface information, most interfaces are difficult to solve effectively during that phase. Furthermore, future activities might not be implemented based on changes made by predecessors. In practice, failure to manage interfaces may result in additional work or in low project performance. In order to manage construction interfaces effectively, this study proposes the novel Multilevel Interface (MI) Matrix approach to enhance interface management during the construction phase of construction projects. By using the MI matrix approach, construction interface issues will be tracked and man-aged easily and effectively. Furthermore, this study develops a construction web matrix-based interface management (WMIM) system integrated with the proposed MI Matrix approach. The MI matrix approach and WMIM system are applied to a pilot test to illustrate how to support interface management during the construction project. As results of the pilot test indicate, the MI matrix approach and WMIM system provide an effective interface management tool for the construction phase. Santrauka Statybos projekto statybos darbų etapui būdinga tai, kad su įvairiais subjektais palaikoma gausybė ryšių. Daugumą jų šiame etape veiksmingai palaikyti dažniausiai ne itin lengva, nes projekto dalyviai paprastai informacija apie juos nesidalija. Be to, perimantys darbą gali ir nesiremti savo pirmtakų padarytais pakeitimais. Praktine prasme nesugebant valdyti ryšių, gali tekti darbus perdaryti arba projekto efektyvumas gali sumažėti. Efektyviam su statyba susijusių ryšių valdymui šiame darbe siūlomas novatoriškas įvairialygių ryšių (ĮR) matricos metodas, leidžiantis pagerinti ryšių valdymą statybos projekto statybos darbų etape. Taikant ĮR matricos metodą lengva veiksmingai sekti ir valdyti statybų ryšių klausimus. Be to, atliekant tyrimą sukuriama projekto dalyviams skirta internetinė matricinė statybų ryšių valdymo (WMIM) sistema, į kurią įtrauktas siūlomas ĮR matricos metodas. Taip pat, taikant ĮR matricos metodą ir WMIM sistemą, atliekamas bandymas, rodantis, kaip jie padeda valdyti statybos projekto ryšius. Bandymo rezultatai rodo, kad ĮR matricos metodas ir WMIM sistema – tai efektyvi ryšių valdymo priemonė statybos darbų etape.

This paper established a decomposition hierarchical network model of project level collaborative design process, based on work breakdown structure WBS, for character complex product collaborative design in dynamic alliance. The workflow of product collaborative design was established using time sequence Petri net, and the key assignment which has influence on design schedule and all design time were solved, after analyzing and comparing existing model method of collaborative design. And then experiments were used to verify. Theses technology support time management of workflow in project collaborative and shorten development cycle of collaborative project.

This article examines the consequences of the migration of collective action into the mediated sphere. It focuses on the impact of the Internet on key psychological factors that are involved in collective action. The structure is as follows. First, the article considers the theoretical backdrop to its themes, focusing first on the classic literatures on crowds and on mediated communication, followed by more contemporary perspectives – identifying the underlying consistencies in the theoretical themes these literatures address. It identifies some key psychological factors that drive collective action. Then the article considers how the Internet changes the nature of collective action and the context in which it takes place. Subsequently, it elaborates how these changes might affect the key factors previously identified. Finally, the article takes a step back from all this and returns to the question of whether this amounts to a revolution in the way collective actions take place.

Purpose Construction projects have huge impacts on the social sustainability of the neighbouring community. The purpose of this paper is to identify and understand the key factors of a construction project that contribute to the social sustainability of a neighbourhood. Design/methodology/approach Questionnaire surveys relating to two case studies of regeneration projects in Saudi Arabia were carried out to ascertain and analyse the perceptions of residents of the neighbourhood communities in which the projects were built. Findings The results derived from factor analysis suggested five significant underlying social factors: health and physical comfort, accessibility, integration, economy and participation. These are defined as the core social functions necessary for enhancing social sustainability in the neighbourhood community as a result of new construction. Originality/value Ideally, a construction project will create spaces where people can interact socially, develop a sense of community and grow and prosper. This study reveals how the neighbours of the project felt about it and what sort of input they wanted to have in the design, construction and operation of the facility. For developers emphasising sustainability, this is the essential data.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationships between three key factors that cause workplace bullying among subcontractor managers toward intention to quit the undertaken project within the context of Malaysia. Design/methodology/approach This study utilized the simple sampling method to select its study sample, while the questionnaire survey approach was implemented amidst 500 G6 and G7 contractor managers across Peninsular Malaysia. A total of 210 completed questionnaires were returned. Partial least square-structural equation modeling was administered to analyze the data via SmartPls 3.0 software. Findings This study discovered three significant factors (main contractor leadership, construction culture, work organization and job design) that displayed positive effect on workplace bullying among subcontractor managers toward intention to quit. The study outcomes can serve as a direction for policy makers to reduce bullying within the construction project environment. Practical implications This study serves as an instruction for main contractors to reinvent their style of management in overcoming bullying in construction projects. This paper guides that collaborative relationship among various parties in construction projects, including the representatives of main contractors and subcontractor managers, may assist in addressing the hostile environment of construction project, in order to create a constructive relationship between them that leads to overall project success. Originality/value Recognition of the three key factors that lead to workplace bullying among subcontractor managers in the construction industry, which are bound to enhance intention to quit based on the data set with strong statistical results, has made the research original.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate a systematic methodology to manage asset data flow between building stakeholders throughout building life cycle using the Construction Operation Building Information Exchange (COBie) standard. Design/methodology/approach A literature review of the relevant building information modelling (BIM) for facilities management (FM) studies including the gaps and challenges of producing COBie data is analysed. Then a standard project management methodology by Project Management Institute (PMI) is introduced as a theoretical framework to map the different areas of managing COBie data as a project in coordination with Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Plan of work. This theoretical background is coupled with an inductive approach through the placement within a construction company (Bouygues, UK) in the UCLH construction project to produce the conceptual framework that is aligned with industry needs. Findings The lack of well-structured approach to manage COBie data throughout building life cycle causes many problems and confusions about the roles and responsibilities of different stakeholders in creating and managing asset data. This confusion in turn results in incomplete and low-quality COBie data at the handover phase which hinders the ability of facility managers to use these data effectively in the operations phase. The proposed conceptual framework provides a standard project management process to systemise the data flow among all stakeholders. Practical implications The proposed framework is developed in liaison with a large construction company, so it is well aligned with an actual industry approach to managing COBie data. Furthermore, it provides a systematic step-by-step approach to managing COBie as a project that could be easily implemented in actual construction projects. Originality/value The paper introduced a novel approach to manage COBie data using a standard project management methodology based on an actual live construction project perspective coupled with project management theory.
