Telehealth is a means for providing care to our rural patients. This mode of healthcare delivery is not without challenges with technology, research, quality improvement, practice and education. Here we present the TRIP-E Meta Model. This model was derived from a two phased process. First, we performed a review of literature and from this developed the first attempt at model development. Second, we took student evaluations from a telehealth education program for Doctor of Nursing Practice students. Based on their feedback, we then further advanced the first model to the TRIP-E Meta Model. This model is a comprehensive guide to research, quality improvement, practice and education. As a meta model, the TRIP-E can have other theories applied for projects. This feature of meta models provide flexibility for the model. We invite others to test this model for its flexibility and usability.

Doctor of nursing practice (DNP) clinicians have a critical role to play in improving nursing practice through clinical inquiry. DNP-prepared clinicians must be able to quickly translate new knowledge into clinical practice to effectively care for patients and provide safe and optimal outcomes. The ability to address contemporary and future practice issues and concerns requires that DNP graduates work from a strong scientific foundation in their practice (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2006). Quality outcomes may be achieved using many different methods of clinical inquiry such as evidence-based practice, quality improvement, quality improvement science, or research as defined in Table 1. The purpose of this article is to inform DNP-prepared clinicians for the use of new knowledge, and related ethical issues, to provide high-quality health care, initiate change, and improve evidence-based nursing practice.]

BackgroundDoctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs must assure that attention to safe quality healthcare is threaded throughout the curriculum and prepare students to lead quality improvement (QI) initiatives in healthcare systems.ObjectiveThis article illustrates the integration of implementation science, QI methods, process and evaluation tools, and faculty enrichment as strategies to strengthen QI projects in a DNP program.MethodsA three-phased approach to implement strategies to strengthen QI projects in a DNP program and to enhance faculty engagement was undertaken. A needs assessment drove the development of strategies to strengthen QI in a DNP program.ResultsOutcomes of implementing strategies to strengthen QI in a DNP program showed rapid uptake of the concepts of QI process models into course content within the DNP curriculum.ConclusionsStrategies consisted of assessment of courses for gaps in QI content, faculty enrichment sessions on implementation science, QI processes and models, QI metrics and data analytics, embedding new content in the DNP program courses and the use of a rigorous evaluation tool for QI projects.Implications for NursingWhen provided with QI mentors and tools, DNP students are prepared to lead QI initiatives in healthcare systems to improve the safety and quality of healthcare.

A strong relationship exists between theory, research, and evidence-based practice; and these three entities are necessary to guide practice and contribute to the body of nursing knowledge. Doctor of nursing practice graduates can serve as leaders as they enter into their respective clinical practice areas. Through education of peers, along with translation and evaluation of current theoretical literature and empirical data, these advanced practice nurses can positively influence nursing practice and patient care.
