This paper presents insights into the lived realities of less than full immigration status women (LTFIS) living in Canada. This exploratory project combines a review of existing literature and studies along with the research findings of 12 face-to-face interviews with key informants who work closely with the sample population. This study found that the varying degrees of immigration statuses these women possess, and the rights and the entitlements that are affixed are further complicated by legal, policy and structural barriers stemming from the implementation of the immigration and refugee determination system. This topic has been examined from a social exclusion framework and employs a race and gendered analysis in order to address the nuanced influences and outcomes of the extent to which LTFIS women understand their immigration status and able to navigate the immigration and refugee determination system.

The increase in student enrolment and the need  to cater to students of diverse backgrounds have led to the adoption of blended learning in many higher learning institutions. Blended learning, which allows both face to face interaction and on-line delivery, has been adopted into many curricula. One such institution is University Technology MARA which is slowly introducing features of blended learning in its course syllabus beginning with practice to online assessments. However, to ensure successful implementation of blended learning as part of the curricula, there are several aspects for consideration such as learner and teacher readiness for blended learning. This paper examines issues regarding the use of blended learning as a delivery method at UiTM Kedah . The discussion in this paper focuses on learner’ readiness and perceptions of the blended learning environment. The data collected for this study are responses from learners to a questionnaire survey. The research findings form the basis for recommendations for the development of learning and teaching practices using blended learning approaches to enhance learners' learning experiences.

The study aims to highlight the current learning approaches used by postgraduate students to complete their postgraduate studies on time, as studies have shown many students have failed to finish their studies as planned. In particular, this study focuses on factors and methods that are perceived to be most effective by students to help them complete their studies on time.  Methodology: Thisstudy was based on a qualitative approach involving semi-structured interviews. The study sample consisted of 14 postgraduate students and one lecturers as respondents. The research instrument was based on interview questions to elicit relevant information on their demography and learning practices. Data were collected and organized into four themes and were subsequently analyzed descriptively.     Findings: The findings showed that face-to-face discussions were the most popular practice adopted by the respondents. The findings also showed several factors had significant impacts on student learning, such as interpersonal relationships between students and supervisors, commitment, financial commitment, and moral support, which needs to be taken into account in helping students to complete on time.     Significance: The research findings can inform all the stakeholders, notably students, supervisors, and administrative officers, factors that have profound impacts on postgraduate students’ efforts to graduate on time.

PurposeChallenges of teamwork in online classes may adversely affect students’ future attitudes toward teamwork. Further, there is a concern about whether online programs foster students’ teamwork skills. To answer these questions, the purpose of this paper is to compare online and face-to-face students’ attitudes toward teamwork, interest in learning teamwork skills and teamwork self-efficacy.Design/methodology/approachThe authors developed a conceptual model explaining how students’ background, engagement in learning teamwork, teamwork self-efficacy and interest in learning teamwork affect attitudes toward teamwork and rigorously tested the model for a meaningful comparison between online and face-to-face students. Attitudes toward teamwork, teamwork interest and teamwork self-efficacy of 582 online and face-to-face students who attend the same academic program were compared.FindingsThe results suggest that online students have less positive attitudes towards teamwork compared to face-to-face students although online students have a higher level of teamwork self-efficacy. Therefore, online students’ relative less positive attitudes toward teamwork cannot be explained by the lack of engagement, teamwork skills or interest.Research limitations/implicationsThe homogeneity of the sample population is one of the limitations of the paper although it provides the opportunity for a comparative study of online and face-to-face students by controlling the majors.Practical implicationsInstructors should evaluate the appropriateness of team assignments while incorporating teamwork in online classes.Originality/valueConcerns about online teamwork are discussed but have not been rigorously investigated in the literature. The authors conducted a comprehensive study involving 582 undergraduate students. The findings of this paper suggest that new approaches are needed to incorporate teamwork in online classes. The results also show that importance of building teamwork self-efficacy.

This paper reveals how the sources of Javanese culture, which has been instilled by parents of children as the new generation of the successor to the family business, can act as values of sources of inspiration which shapes the behavior of entrepreneurship in the creative industry. Entrepreneurship in family businesses uses these Javanese values as the standards of the family's belief, which makes the principles as an identity that guides them in entrepreneurship and creates a way of life in the running entrepreneurialism. The method used in this research is a social constructionist, narrative and interpretive. The narrative-based research approach is done through data collection with depth interview, and non-participatory observation as well as analysis of the theme that create the methodological foundation. The ideas emerged and developed from in narrative face-to-face that became a proposition of research findings. Findings clearly indicate the relationship between Javanese cultures which is owned by parents has been the values that are believed by the second generation and this has motivated their behavior entrepreneurship, and impact the learning element of entrepreneurship, as well as orientation in entrepreneurship.  The internalization of the values of Javanese culture Bapakisme (paternalism) and Rukun (harmony) have motivated the behavior of entrepreneurship when running a business relationship. Javanese cultural values implemented in the form of obedience to parents, keeping harmony, learning competitors, watching of God, sincere, assertive, fortune flows, trust, motivating, cultivation of religious values, and independent values. The research provides new insights into the culture of entrepreneurship at the local level and links the insights to the cultivation of cultural values in entrepreneurship, which is realized in everyday behavior. The construct built provides the possibility of new learning materials for the perpetrators of entrepreneurs in Indonesia, where 47% of the population of Indonesia is Javanese ethnicity.

Aim: In this study, it was aimed to examine the views of mothers regarding the transition process of infants to complementary foods. Method: Structured interview technique, one of the qualitative research techniques, was used in the research. The study group, on the other hand, consists of 19 mothers who have babies between 6-12 months and who have been in the supplementary feeding process, determined by the criterion sampling method. Demographic information form and open-ended interview questions previously prepared by the researchers were used to obtain general information about mothers and babies as data collection tools. The forms were filled in by face-to-face interview method with the mothers. The data were analyzed by content analysis method. Findings: According to the research findings, mothers' attitudes towards complementary food are generally moderate, they choose food according to nutritional value, they have positive feelings during feeding, they prefer yogurt as the first food, they prefer steam cooking as a cooking method, they use the internet as a source of information. , most of them were still breastfed. Conclusion: In this study, it was concluded that the behaviors of babies during feeding were generally positive, their attitudes towards people other than their mothers were normal during feeding, no distractions were used during feeding, preliminary preparation was made before feeding, and the BLW method was used.

Online enrollments have been growing substantially faster than overall higher education enrollments. It is argued that online learning can help address issues of educational inequity, poverty, and social exclusion. The momentum is moving towards online learning, and universities are pressured to develop more online options for their students in order to stay relevant and provide needed flexibility. On average, courses that are delivered online have higher attrition rates than regular face-to-face courses. There are numerous challenges and difficulties in developing online learning environments without sacrificing the quality of learning. This case study examines the development, delivery, and evaluation of online learning through the eyes of students and faculty of an educational leadership department in a Southeast research university.

With the availability of Internet and digital technologies, many universities are integrating new interactive media into course curricula, both to enhance conventional classroom-based learning and to enable remote students to overcome barriers of time and distance. Although the focus of computer-mediated communication in teaching and learning has traditionally been on distance education—delivering courses to students in remote locations—colleges are increasingly using interactive media to enhance on-campus courses, with positive outcomes. “Distributed learning” describes educational experiences that combine face-to-face teaching with synchronous and asynchronous mediated interaction (Dede, Brown-L’Bahy, Ketelhut, & Whitehouse, 2004). This instructional strategy distributes learning across a variety of geographic settings, across time, and across various interactive media. This study extends prior research findings on the design and educational outcomes of a Harvard Graduate School of Education course, Learning Media that Bridge Distance and Time, as a prototypical distributed learning experience.

AbstractThis paper reviews the ways in which interactions have been studied, and the findings of such studies, in science education in both face-to-face and remote laboratories. Guided by a systematic selection process, 27 directly relevant articles were analysed based on three categories: the instruments used for measuring interactions, the research findings on student interactions, and the theoretical frameworks used in the studies of student interactions. In face-to-face laboratories, instruments for measuring interactions and the characterisation of the nature of interactions were prominent. For remote laboratories, the analysis of direct interactions was found to be lacking. Instead, studies of remote laboratories were mainly concerned with their practical scope. In addition, it is found that only a limited number of theoretical frameworks have been developed and applied in the research design. Existent theories are summarised and possible theoretical frameworks that may be implemented in studies of interactions in undergraduate laboratories are proposed. Finally, future directions for research on the inter-relationship between student interactions and laboratory learning are suggested.

Personal networks, in contrast to organizational relations, have recently increased their significance to firms by allowing them to acquire external knowledge and strengthen their innovation capacity. Hot debates on the geography and innovation effects of personal networks persist, but these discussions are mainly derived from research works on western economies. Since personal interactions are context-sensitive, this paper examines the geography and the innovation effects of personal networks on biomedical firms in Guangzhou, which has a unique political and socioeconomic context owing to the transitional nature of China. This case study indicates that the geographic nature of personal knowledge networks is largely locally-based, and the primary driver of such networks is experience-based practices, such as repeated face-to-face contacts, labor mobility, and shared life experience. Personal knowledge networks contribute to both problem-solving and radical innovation for firms as a result of the guanxi-based relations in China that transform personal networks into channels for mobilizing innovation-related resources. Moreover, by dividing personal networks into bonding, bridging, and linking networks, this paper also de-homogenizes personal networks and delineates specific and differentiated innovation effects of manifold social relationships. Based on the research findings, policy implications aiming at laying the social ground of innovation are addressed.
