This study attempts to determine the students` Ability to Analyze the Simple Past and Past Perfect Tenses. The authors used the descriptive method in this study. The population of the research were the fifth semester students of Faculty of Literature UMI Makassar in academic year 2018/2019. The sample of the study consisted of 20 students and were chosen through random sampling method. The istruments used were two kinds of instrument namely objective test and questionnaire to acquire data on their analytical capability of the simple past and past perfect tenses. Findings revealed that the ability of the fifth semester students was deemed as fair. This depicts that the students` ability to analyze Simple Past and Past Perfect Tenses is 59, 20 which was condidered as fair. The problems found faced by the students ability to Analyze the Simple Past and Past Perfect Tenses were; (1) sometimes students were confused in analyzing simple past and past perfect tenses due to the lack of basic knowledge, (2) there were many students who did not have rich vocabularies after they graduated from high school, (3) they had forgotten the pattern of the tenses, and (4) students were still having difficulties to differentiate between simple past and past perfect tenses. The implication of this study is that fresh graduates of senior high school are still lacking the necessary requirements to fullfil the standard English language competency which leads to poor language outcome of the Indonesian high schools today. Hence, the study srongly suggests that it is essential to pay special attention on senior high school students’ second language acquisition before continuing their study in Higher Education.

Using a quantitative-comparative design, this study compares the language proficiency of the Senior High School Students of a certain University from the five (5) different strands; Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics (STEM), Humanities-Education-Social Sciences (HESS or HUMSS), Business-Accountancy-Management (BAM or ABM), Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) and General Academic Strand (GAS) and determine on which of these strands excels in the language proficiency test. There are 40 students randomly selected per strand. They are tested using the Language Proficiency Test in English. The one-way Analysis of Variance was utilized in the study. The findings reveal that there is a significant difference (p<0.05) in the English language proficiency of the students from the five (5) strands. Moreover, the students from the STEM strand excel from the other strands. This further indicates that the STEM students are more superior and developed on the academic literacy, alternative understandings and adequate formulation of theories and concepts in dealing with different variations of linguistics skills.

English Language Teaching (ELT) textbooks serve as the basis for many language inputs that learners receive and language practices that occur in the classroom. They may provide the basis for ideas and instructional activities as well as giving teachers rationales for what they do. The objective of this analysis is to know about how much a textbook meets the requirements of a good EFL textbook. The evaluation checklist used in this paper is the modification of Cunningsworth’s (1995) checklist developed by Al-sowat (2012). There are nine issues of textbook evaluating in this checklist: (1) layout and physical appearance; (2) content; (3) objectives; (4) language type; (5) skills; (6) activities and tasks; (7) structure and vocabulary; (8) culture values; and (9) teacher's needs.

This present study aims to examine language proficiency levels of high school students in particular assessment form and describe how such level of skills is appropriately matched for particular level of learners. While a proper language literacy investigation may be biased to perception that it can fairly measures students’ comprehension, Second Language Acquisition (SLA) theories view that learner’s age may influence how they acquire a new language. In responding to such issue, this observational study seeks for the information through document observation on students’ scores of an English test conducted by the school as the main data. This observation allows the researchers to analyze the scores and describe it according to justified language competency and language acquisition. The data are classified and clarified by underpinning the theories related to the issues. The result showed that senior high school students generally obtain average scores that allow them to be categorized as Minimal and Basic level of proficiency. As per this level, the justification of language acquisition reveals that the students are included in pre-production and early production stage. Students in this stage are considered able to have average competency, especially in receptive English.

This descriptive qualitative study was aimed at discovering English language teachers’ challenges in teaching TOEFL preparation for senior high school students. The data were collected by using an in-depth interview with six experienced and qualified English language teachers teaching TOEFL in the three-state and private senior high schools in Aceh province, Indonesia. Open, axial, and selective coding techniques were used to analyze the data from in-depth interviews. The results show that teachers faced some challenges during teaching TOEFL preparation for senior high school students including students’ different language proficiency, their lack of vocabulary mastery, their fatigue, their passive attitude, class size, and time limitation. The findings recommend the further idea to organize a more organized preparation TOEFL program for high school students that can be integrated into the existing curriculum, and thus it will no longer be viewed merely as an extracurricular program.

The influence of first language (L1) has been widely recognized as a crucial factor in Second Language Acquisition (SLA). Language transfer is a typical phenomenon originating from this impact of L1. Many studies have tried to explore the influence of learners’ L1 on their SLA. This paper reports a study conducted at a rural senior high school in eastern China. Based on the lexical transfer taxonomy proposed by Dodigovic et al (2015), this research attempted to at first identify examples of lexical transfer from Chinese to English caused by (1) Chinese polysemes, (2) Chinese collocations, and (3) multiword units (MWUs) yielded from learners writing. Subsequently, the patterns of and underlying reasons for lexical transfer were traced. 115 pieces of students writing were examined for error collection, and some typical examples from which were further analyzed to show how negative lexical transfer occurs. The results suggest that a great proportion of errors were caused by Chinese polysemes. The significant difference between the lexical specificity of Chinese and English as well as the word-for-word semantic equivalent assumption of L2 learners were found to be important reasons for negative lexical transfer. Pedagogical implications such adopting a wider range of semantization strategies and preventing learners from taking word-for-word relation between L1 and L2 for granted were drawn from the discussion.
