This paper presents an optimal Direct Torque Control (DTC) strategy for Doubly Fed Induction Generator based wind turbine. The proposed strategy is considered based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) Algorithm. The PSO is found to be robust and fast in solving nonlinear problems. Motivation for application of PSO approach is to overcome the limitation of the conventional controllers design, which cannot guarantee satisfactory control performance when designed by trial and error. In this work PSO algorithm was used to adjust the hysteresis torque and flux comparators bandwidths and to tune the parameters of Variable Gain PI (VGPI) controller designed for Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) speed control of wind turbine to ensure high performance torque control. The optimal control strategy is considered in detail and it is shown that the use of the optimized controllers reduces rotor flux and electromagnetic torque ripples and improves the system dynamic performances. The effectiveness of the proposed direct torque control based on PSO algorithm (optimal DTC) method is illustrated through simulations on 1.5 MW DFIG based wind turbine. Simulation results illustrate the improved performances of optimal DTC compared with the conventional DTC.

An efficiency optimization model for induction motors with speed-sensorless control is presented in this paper. An mathematical loss model with stator iron loss in DTC(Direct Torque Control) system is used to calculate the motors loss, the loss efficiency and the optimal flux. Additionally, the efficiency optimization control strategy combined with the speed-sensorless model is used to rebuild the simulation modeling. The simulation results with the proposed control strategy show superior effects compared to the traditional control methods. The optimal control strategy can be achieved to improve the motor efficiency.

In this paper, a new vector control strategy is proposed to reduce torque ripples and harmonic currents represented in switching table-based direct torque control (ST-DTC) of a six-phase induction motor (6PIM). For this purpose, a new set of inputs is provided for the switching table (ST). These inputs are based on the decoupled current components in the synchronous reference frame. Indeed, using both field-oriented control (FOC) and direct torque control (DTC) concepts, precise inputs are applied to the ST in order to achieve better steady-state torque response. By applying the duty cycle control strategy, the loss subspace components are eliminated through a suitable selection of virtual voltage vectors. Each virtual voltage vector is based on a combination of a large and a medium vector to make the average volt-seconds in loss subspace near to zero. Therefore, the proposed strategy not only notably reduces the torque ripples, but also suppresses the low frequency current harmonics, simultaneously. Simulation and experimental results clarify the high performance of the proposed scheme.

This paper proposes a Wind Turbine Emulator (WTE) using an Indirect Field Oriented (IFO) Induction Motor (IM). The IM drive can be controlled as a conventional prime mover in speed mode, or a wind turbine in torque-speed mode via robust observed torque control. This paper presents key issues for establishing a high-performance IFO IM drive. Further, this study develops a wind turbine load Interior Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Generator (IPMSG) followed by a three-phase Vienna Switch-Mode Rectifier (SMR). It receives mechanical driven power from the WTE and establishes a 400V DC-link for the DC micro-grid. The good generating characteristics are achieved through proper controls of both the IPMSG and SMR. Various wind turbine torque-speed and power-speed characteristic curves under different wind speeds can be emulated by the developed WTE. The designed results are verified by simulations. The measured results indicate that the errors are within 1.5% and 1.0%, respectively, for the torque and the power compared to the designed ones. The maximum power point tracking (MPPT) function with good performance for the PMSG with Vienna SMR is achieved using the perturb and observation (P&O) approach. The dynamic and steady-state operating characteristics of the developed whole turbine emulator driven PMSG system are assessed experimentally.

This paper presents a PIR regulator using direct torque control strategy of grid connected wind turbine driven doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) when the grid voltage is unbalanced. Under the unbalanced grid voltage condition, the stator voltage and current quality is strongly affected due to the negative and distorted components. It will be reducing the performance of other normal loads connected to the DFIG. That control scheme consisting of indirect matrix converter using DTC. To verify the value of the proposed control strategy, simulation results with 500 MVA DFIG topology are presented and discussed in the paper. Finally, the simulation studies are carried out on a 500 MVA wind-turbine driven DFIG system under unbalanced grid voltage conditions. All the results are validated by using PSCAD simulation.
