These days, NoSQL (Not only SQL) databases are being used as a deployment tool for Data Warehouses (DW) due to its support for dynamic and scalable data modeling capabilities. Yet, decision-makers have faced several challenges to accept it as a major choice for implementation of their DW. The most significant one among those challenges is a lack of common conceptual model and a systematic design methodology for different NoSQL databases. The objective of this paper is to resolve these challenges by proposing an ontology based formal conceptual model for NoSQL based DWs. These proposed concepts are capable of realizing the cube concepts for visualization of multi-dimensional data in NoSQL based DW solutions. In this context, two strategies are specified, implemented and illustrated using a case study for devising of the proposed conceptual model.

Purpose Centralization, mergers and cost reductions have generally led to increasing levels of span of control (SOC), and thus potentially to lower leadership capacity. The purpose of this paper is to explore how a large SOC impacts hospital staff and their leaders. Design/methodology/approach The study is based on a qualitative explorative case study of three large inpatient wards. Findings The study finds that the nursing staff and their frontline leaders experience challenges in regard to visibility and role of the leader, e.g., in creating overview, coordination, setting-up clear goals, following up and being in touch. However, large wards also provide flexibility and development possibilities. Practical implications The authors discuss the implications of these findings for decision makers in deciding future SOC and for future SOC research. Originality/value Only few studies have qualitatively explored the consequences of large SOC in hospitals.

Purpose – This case example looks at how Deloitte Consulting applies the Three Rules synthesized by Michael Raynor and Mumtaz Ahmed based on their large-scale research project that identified patterns in the way exceptional companies think. Design/methodology/approach – The Three Rules concept is a key piece of Deloitte Consulting’s thought leadership program. So how are the three rules helping the organization perform? Now that research has shown how exceptional companies think, CEO Jim Moffatt could address the question, “Does Deloitte think like an exceptional company?” Findings – Deloitte has had success with an approach that promotes a bias towards non-price value over price and revenue over costs. Practical implications – It’s critical that all decision makers in an organization understand how decisions that are consistent with the three rules have contributed to past success as well as how they can apply the rules to difficult challenges they face today. Originality/value – This is the first case study written from a CEO’s perspective that looks at how the Three Rules approach of Michael Raynor and Mumtaz Ahmed can foster a firm’s growth and exceptional performance.


The chapter discusses the necessity for data modeling in NoSQL world. The NoSQL data modeling is a huge challenge because one of the main features of NoSQL databases is that they are schema-free, that is they allow data manipulation without the need for the previous modeling or developing an entity-relationship (ER) or similar model. Although the absence of a schema can be an advantage in some situations, with the increase in the number of NoSQL database implementations, it appears that the absence of a conceptual model can be a source of substantial problems. In order to better understand the need for data modeling in NoSQL databases, first the basic structure of an ER model and an analysis of its limitations are summarized, especially regarding an application in NoSQL databases. The concept and Object modeling notation is presented as one of the possible solutions for data modeling in NoSQL databases.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a method for identifying business process-relevant contextual information that is likely to impact on the process goal. The ORGANON method describes a semi-structured procedural guide alongside with a set of criteria and a matrix for analyzing ontological transactions, which can be used to identify which context information can be considered relevant to a business process. Design/methodology/approach – The authors report on an evaluation of the ORGANON method through a case study conducted in an organization that works in the social security domain. Findings – The results provide evidences of the feasibility of the method application in this scenario. Originality/value – Our research contributes to the literature on business processes flexibility, specifically through a proposal for context identification that can be extended to current techniques for business process modeling and in turn forms the basis for existing approaches for making business processes more flexible. The work has implications for the strategic management of organizations, by suggesting a method that provides informational support to decision makers about when, where and why business processes need to be adapted.

This study shows an application of the Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) Methodology in the field of medical engineering. This research aims to demonstrate the application of a systematic design approach in the development of the “Ocane”, an innovative concept of smart cane for visually impaired patients which was thought of in answer to the end user’s needs, deploying an easy to transport, locate, and adjust element with ultrasonic sensors and tactile feedback. DFSS is an analytical design methodology meant to organize project workflow in a sequence of specific steps. Other standardized design procedures such as Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and Stylistic Design Engineering (SDE) have been used to support DFSS in terms of targeting customer requirements and focusing on aesthetics for ergonomics analysis, respectively. First, the QFD process is introduced and applied to gather the final customer needs, completing the analysis with benchmarking and similar-thought products on the market. Afterwards, a description of the DFSS methodology and application to the case study was deployed. Thereafter, the SDE procedure is exposed by identifying the “Ocane” concept and development, and moving towards the completion of an inventive product with a creative design and careful attention to visually impaired clients’ requirements.

Although a large number of ferry and roll on/roll off services exist in Canada, little research has been carried out on the design of their terminals. In the planning and design of a new or re modelled terminal system, one of the most important tasks is to determine the required number and size of components of the terminal complex. Although advances in design methodology and specific techniques have recently been made for other modal terminals, ferry terminal design has largely been piecemeal and nonscientific. This paper reports a systematic design methodology for ferry and roll on/roll off terminals. In addition to a description of specific techniques developed, design criteria and a case study are reported as well.

The purpose of this case study was to document and evaluate the application of a top-down design methodology (Foley & van Dam, 1982) to a pre-existing computer system to test the methodology's usefulness as well as to gain insights into the design process itself. System experts advocate design of a system “top-down” instead of “bottom-up” as a way to sequentially examine the complex task of interface design while allowing re-examination of previous steps in that design (Foley, 1981). The study involved a menu-based, mini-computer system designed at Goddard Space Flight Center called the Mission Planning Terminal (MPT). The MPT will be used at Goddard for planning and scheduling of satellite activities through the NASA Network Control Center (NCC). The scheduler/analyst's task includes submitting a schedule of activities for his mission, transmitting it to NCC, and then modifying the returned schedule, if necessary, using the MPT. The top-down design process is distinctly divided into four phases: conceptual, semantic, syntactic, and lexical (Foley, 1981). The first phase, conceptual, consists of defining key application concepts needed by the user. The semantic phases involve defining meanings such as information needed in order to use an object. The syntactic design defines sequences of inputs (similar to English grammar rules) and outputs (the two and three dimensional organization of the display). The last step, lexical design, describes how words in the input/output sequence are formed from the existing hardware input (Foley & van Dam, 1982). The top-down methodology was applied using MPT documentation and interviews with the designers. During this process, it became clear that although a conceptual model of the MPT existed somewhere, it was never recorded. This led to numerous attempts to extract the main conceptual components of the system from the software operations documents which were constantly changed and were often incomplete. Finally, based on preliminary screen designs, state diagrams were constructed to map out components of the system. By characterization of the MPT in this way (using state diagrams), a clearer picture emerged that finally led to understanding the conceptual model. Once the conceptual model was extracted, redesign of the system, using the top-down method, quickly followed. This case study clearly emphasizes the need for a complete and accurate conceptual model if a top-down approach is to be applied. When redesigning an existing system, it frequently becomes necessary to “extract” this model in a bottom-up manner as was the case here.

Purpose: The study aims to identify the main problems of temporary accommodation strategies and to discuss some principles and guidelines in order to assist decision-makers for choosing the most suitable strategy and reach better sustainable temporary housing solutions. Methods: Through a qualitative and applied type approach, the present research has been done by descriptive- analytical method. Documentary and library methods have been used to collect information, and analyze case study to discuss the main sustainability issues regarding temporary housing. In this study, the main focus is on providing qualitative sustainable conceptual model as a platform for decision makers in crisis situations. Results: applying system to every region according to its local data before disaster, determining the activity steps needed to be done before disaster, at the time of disaster and post-disaster and developing a sustainable temporary housing approach. Only then will be able to house the victims in healthy and comfortable environments in a progressive way with the productive usage of the country resources and finally to be ready against the disasters. Conclusion: Lack of a sustainable strategy prevents community resilience and disaster preparedness. At present, the post-disaster housing approach cannot meet the cultural, social, economic and ecological needs of the victims.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop data quality (DQ) assessment model based on content analysis and metadata analysis. Design/methodology/approach A literature review of DQ assessment models has been conducted. A study of DQ key performances (KPIs) has been done. Finally, the proposed model has been developed and applied in a case study. Findings The results of this study shows that the metadata data have important information about DQ in a database and can be used to assess DQ to provide decision support for decision makers. Originality/value There is a lot of DQ assessment in the literature; however, metadata are not considered in these models. The model developed in this study is based on metadata in addition to the content analysis, to find a quantitative DQ assessment.
