The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis was cultured with powdered dried Chlorella in treatment 1, live or fresh cultured Chlorella in treatment 2, and baker's yeast in treatment 3. All the jars under three treatments were stocked with B. plicatilis at the initial density of 10 individuals per ml. The water temperature, air temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen were within the suitable range for B. plicatilis culture. The highest population densities of B. plicatilis in treatments 1, 2 and 3 were 60000, 50000 and 30000 (individual/L), respectively. The powered dried Chlorella was comparable with live Chlorella and may be used successfully as a feed for B. plicatilis. DOI: 10.3329/bvet.v27i2.7559 Bangl. vet. 2010. Vol. 27, No. 2, 91-98

Effect of marine microalgal diet on filtration and ingestion rates of Brachionus plicatilis was studied. Marine microalgae viz., Nannochloropsis oculata, Isochrysis galbana, Chaetoceros calcitrans and a combination of N. oculata and I. galbana (Nanno+Iso) at different cell concentrations were selected for the experiment and triplicates were maintained for each feed. Significant difference (p<0.05) was observed in the filtration and ingestion rates of B. plicatilis, between the treatments. Peak filtration rate of 12.2x10-5 cells ml-1 ind-1 min-1 was recorded in B. plicatilis fed with Nanno+Iso, followed by I. galbana. Ingestion rate was found to be significantly high (p<0.05) for those fed with C. calcitrans, followed by Nanno+Iso. Filtration rate was significantly high (p<0.05) in rotifers stocked at an initial density of 50 nos. ml-1 fed with Nanno+Iso. The results indicated that a combination of Nanno and Iso is the best suitable microalgal diet for rotifer with peak filtration (12.2x10-5cells ml-1 ind-1 min-1) and ingestion (5.4x10-3 cells ml-1 ind-1 min-1) rates during the first 60 min.

Abstract This work analyzes the control of optimum dissolved oxygen of an industrial fed-batch procedure in which baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) is grown under aerobic conditions. Sugar oxidative metabolism was controlled by monitoring aeration, molasses flows, and yeast concentration in the propagator along the later stage of the propagation, and keeping pH and temperature under controlled conditions. A large number of fed-batch growth experiments were performed in the tank for a period of 16 h, for each of the 3 manufactured commercial products. For optimization and control of cultivations, the growth and metabolite formation were quantified through measurement of specific growth and ethanol concentration. Data were adjusted to a model of multiple lineal regression, and correlations representing dissolved oxygen as a function of aeration, molasses, yeast concentration in the broth, temperature, and pH were obtained. The actual influence of each variable was consistent with the mathematical model, further justified by significant levels of each variable, and optimum aeration profile during the yeast propagation was found.

The Koshi river is the major tributaries of the Ganges which originates from the snowy peaks of Tibetan plateau in the central Himalayas. Its total catchment area is 60,400 km2, of which 28,140 km2 lies in Nepal, while the remainder is situated in Tibet. It passes from Nepal to India via the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve area of Nepal. It destroys large area through floods, especially in India. This paper deals with the air temperature and phyco-chemical parameters like temperature, transparency, pH, oxygen, carbondioxide, alkalinity, hardness, chloride and biological oxygen demand of water of Koshi river at Kushaha area of Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve. The water temperature was recorded maximum in summer season but the transparency, pH, dissolved oxygen, total alkalinity and total hardness were recorded maximum in winter season. Similarly, free carbondioxide was maximum in rainy season and chloride and biological oxygen demand were recorded maximum in summer season. The air temperature and water temperature had positive and significant correlation with free carbondioxide and biological oxygen demand. Dissolved oxygen had positive and significant correlation with pH, total alkalinity and total hardness. Ramshagar dighi is a larger historical man made reservoir (Dighi, Bengali meaning) situated at Tajpur village in Dinajpur, Bangladesh. This study was aimed to estimate current status of physico-chemical variables of water of Ramshagar dighi at Dinajpur District, Bangladesh. Monthly average changes in physico-chemical parameters such as water temperature, total dissolved oxygen, air temperature, humidity, rainfall, water depth and pH of water were analyzed for the period of 11 months from May 2011 to March 2012. The average air temperature (°C) at the study area of Ramshagar dighi at Dinajpur District was determined as 24.97 ± 4.92. Our present study showed that physico-chemical properties of water in Ramshagar dighi were monthly average of water temperature (°C) as 24.68 ± 4.77, air temperature (°C) 24.97 ± 4.92, humidity as 82.075 ± 4.14, rainfall as 1534.5 mm, water depth as 9.10 m ± 1.286, pH as7.67± 0.48 and carbon dioxide as 0.85 ± 0.92 as well as dissolved oxygen as 4.65 ± 0.62 respectively during the period of May 2011 to March 2012. Present work is based on the physico-chemical parameters of Haleji lake. Physical factors and chemistry oflake water were analyzed with regular intervals. The color of water showed variation from light green to yellowishgreen, air temperature ranged between 20 °C to 35 °C, water temperature between 17 °C to 33 °C , pH 5.5 to 7.5,dissolved oxygen 2.04 mg/L to 6.44 mg/L, salinity 0.32 mg/L to 1.1 mg/L, alkalinity from 30 mg/L to 100 mg/L,acidity 10 to 96 mg/L, sulphate 4.5 mg/L to 305 mg/L, phosphate from 1 mg/L to 190 mg/L, and nitrates 9 mg/L to 270mg/L during 2006, 2007 and 2008 respectively.
