Varietal selection and appropriate placement of nitrogen fertilizer could reduce the magnitude of nitrogen losses to a considerable extent and improve its use efficiency for better grain production. An experiment was carried out during the period from July to December at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh to evaluate the effect of variety and nitrogen fertilizer management on the growth and yield of transplant aman rice. The treatments consisted of three varieties viz. BR11, BRRI dhan49 and Binadhan-7, and five nitrogen fertilizer managements viz. two depth of placement of USG (Urea Super Granule) and three split applications of prilled urea. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The results showed that the effect of variety and nitrogen fertilizer management significantly influenced all the yield contributing characters except weight of 1000- grains, non-effective tillers hill-1 and panicle length. The highest grain yield (3.69 t ha-1) was obtained from Binadhan-7. In the case of nitrogen fertilizer management, the highest grain yield (4.32 t ha-1) was found from the 6 cm depth placement of USG. The highest grain yield (4.82 t ha- 1) was observed from the interaction of Binadhan-7 with the 6 cm depth of placement of USG. It may be concluded that Binadhan-7 with 6 cm depth of placement of USG appeared as the promising practice to maximize the yield of transplant aman rice. Res. Agric., Livest. An experiment was conducted at the Soil Science Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during April to November, 2012 to study the combined effects of Sesbania green manure incorporation with different levels of nitrogen fertilizer on the growth and yield of BINA dhan7. There were five treatments for using Sesbania as pre-rice green manure (GM): Fallow (No GM), GM for incorporation at 40, 50, 60, and 70 days after sowing (DAS). T. Aman was planted after chopping the GM. For T. aman there were 9 treatments: Fallow plot received full dose (180 kg urea ha-1) of N fertilizer while plots with GM received 50 and 75% of recommended N fertilizer. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The highest grain yield of 5752 kg ha-1 and straw yield of 6654 kg ha-1 were observed in the plot treated with 75%recommended dose of nitrogen (RDN) and green manure incorporated at 50 DAS. The lowest grain yield (4783 kg ha-1) and straw yield (5154 kg ha-1) were recorded with GM incorporated at 40 DAS + 50% RDN. The N content and uptake by the grain and straw were differed significantly due to different treatments and maximum uptake was recorded with the application of 75% recommended dose of nitrogen (RDN) and green manure incorporated at 50 DAS. The overall results indicate that application of Sesbania green manure incorporated at 50 DAS in combination with 75% recommended dose of nitrogen could be considered more effective for BINA dhan7 production DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/sja.v12i2.21925 SAARC J. An experiment was carried out at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh to evaluate the effect of urea super granule (USG) as a source of nitrogen on the yield and yield components of transplant Aman rice cv. BRRI dhan39, BRRI dhan46 and BINA dhan7. Five levels of N (viz., 0, 60, 120 kg ha-1 as prilled urea and 60 and 120 kg ha-1 as USG) were taken as experimental treatments. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Plant height, effective tillers hill-1, grains panicle-1 and grain yield varied significantly due to different cultivars. All the yield and yield components except 1000-grain weight were influenced significantly by the levels of nitrogen fertilizer. The highest grain yield (4.82 t ha-1) was recorded in BINA dhan7 and the lowest one (4.30 t ha-1) was recorded in BRRI dhan39. Nitrogen @ 120 kg ha-1 as USG performed the best among the treatments in respect of yield and yield components of rice. The highest grain yield (5.46t ha-1) was obtained from BINA dhan7 with 120 kg N ha-1 as USG which was statistically identical with 60 kg N ha-1 as USG. A considerable amount (31.25%) of prilled urea (PU) nitrogen could be saved by using USG. It may be concluded that USG could be used as N management to achieve better nitrogen use efficiency in reducing N loss than the PU.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/pa.v24i1-2.19095 Progress. POPULATION ARRANGEMENT FOR THE VARIETY OF POPCORN UENF-14 ABSTRACT - The adequacy of the maize population arrangement is among the most important techniques for obtaining higher yields. Therefore, many researchers have been conducting an attempt to study the performance of corn and specialty corn. The objective was to evaluate the performance of the popcorn variety UENF-14 in different population arrangements, in the harvest season and off-season. Two experiments were carried out in Campos dos Goytacazes, North of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, in the off-season 2011, using the UENF-14 variety and the experimental hybrid P2 x P9, and in the season 2011-2012 using UENF-14 and the commercial hybrid IAC-112. The treatments were arranged in randomized complete block design with split plots, in which plots were composed by popcorn genotypes, the subplots consisting of three spacings between sowing lines (0.45, 0.60 and 0.90 m) and the subsubplots composed of three plants per hectare densities (60,000, 75,000 and 90,000 plants.ha-1). The variety UENF-14 presented higher performance than the hybrids, demonstrating its potential for recommendation to the North of Rio de Janeiro State. There was an increase of grain yield by reducing the spacing between the plants rows. The cultivation of the variety UENF-14 reducing the spacing between rows was advantageous for grain production, regardless of planting date. Keywords: Zea mays L., densities of plants, spacing between rows, sowing times.

The research work was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during aman season from July to December 2015 to study the effect of nitrogen fertilizer and weed management on the growth and yield of transplant aman rice cv. BRRI dhan46. The experiment consisted of four fertilizer treatments viz. 0 kg N ha−1 (N0), 40 kg N ha−1(N1), 80 kg N ha−1(N2) and 120 kg N ha−1(N3) and four weeding treatments viz. one hand weeding at 20 DAT (W1), two hand weedings at 20 and 35 DAT (W2), three hand weedings at 20, 35 and 50 DAT (W3), weeding by Japanese rice weeder twice at 20 and 35 DAT (W4) and unweeded control (W5). The experiment was laid out in the randomized complete block design with three replications. The highest plant height (113.00 cm), number of total tillers hill−1 (8.74), number of effective tillers hill−1 (6.18), panicle length (21.98 cm), number of grains panicle−1 (114.20), grain yield (4.00 t ha−1), straw yield (5.25 t ha−1) and biological yield (9.25 t ha−1) were recorded in N2 (80 kg N ha−1) treatment. The lowest plant height (106.00 cm), number of total tillers hill-1 (7.20), number of effective tillers hill−1 (5.00), panicle length (20.70 cm), number of grains panicle−1 (97.60), grain yield (3.52 t ha−1), straw yield (4.46 t ha−1) and biological yield (7.97 t ha−1) were recorded from N0 (No nitrogen fertilizer control) treatment. On the other hand, the highest grain yield 4.23 t ha−1 was observed in three weedings condition because of the highest number of effective tillers hill−1 (6.81), number of grains panicle−1(111.10). The highest straw yield (5.51 t ha−1) was also found in three weeding condition. The lowest grain yield (3.40 t ha−1) was recorded in W5 (unweeded control) treatment. The lowest straw yield (4.31 t ha−1) was also observed in W5 (unweeded control) treatment because of the smallest plant (106.97 cm) and lower number of total tillers hill−1 (7.20). Therefore, 80 kg N ha−1along with three hand weedings at 20, 35 and 50 DAT may be used for obtaining the highest grain and straw yields of BRRI dhan46J. Bangladesh Agril. An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from June to December 2015 to investigate the effect of spacing and fertilizer management on the yield of transplanted Aman rice cv. BRRI dhan39. The experiment comprised of five spacings viz. 25 × 5 cm, 25 × 10 cm, 25 × 15 cm, 25 × 20 cm, 25 × 25 cm and four fertilizer schedules viz. no manure and no fertilizer (control), recommended dose of inorganic fertilizer (80-60-40 kg N, P2 O5 , K2 O ha-1, respectively + 60 kg ha-1 gypsum + 10 kg ha-1 ZnSO4 ), 75% recommended dose of inorganic fertilizer + cow dung at 5 t ha-1, 75% recommended dose of inorganic fertilizer + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Plant height (104.60 cm), number of total tillers hill-1 (11.03), panicle length (22.25 cm), grains panicle-1 (109.00) and grain yield (4.42 t ha-1) were found to be the highest in 25 × 15 cm spacing. Regarding nutrient management, 75% recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + cow dung at 5 t ha-1 superseded other treatments in terms of plant height (107.50 cm), number of total tillers hill-1 (10.40), number of effective tillers hill-1 (7.68), panicle length (22.26 cm), grains panicle-1 (111.70) and grain yield (4.14 t ha-1). The control treatment (no manures and no fertilizers) gave the lowest values for all these parameters. The highest grain yield (4.57 t ha-1) was found in 25 × 15 cm spacing combined with 75% recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + cow dung at 5 t ha-1 and the lowest grain yield (2.50 t ha-1) was found in 25 × 5 cm spacing combined with control (no manures and fertilizers). Therefore, 25 × 15 cm spacing combined with 75% recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + cow dung at 5 t ha-1 appeared as the promising practice in transplant Aman rice cv. BRRI dhan39 cultivation.

An investigation was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University to inspect the effect of vermicompost based nitrogen management and plant spacing on the yield performance of short duration transplant Aus rice (cv. Parija). The study comprised three spacing viz. 20 cm × 20 cm, 20 cm × 15 cm and 20 cm × 10 cm, and five nitrogen management viz. no nitrogen, 75 kg N ha-1, 55 kg N ha-1 + vermicompost @1.25 t ha-1, 35 kg N ha-1 + vermicompost @2.5 t ha-1 and vermicompost @5 t ha-1. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. At harvest, both the spacing of 20 cm × 20 cm and 20 cm × 15 cm produced the tallest plants, the highest number of total tillers hill-1 and effective tillers hill-1. The highest grain yield (3.59 t ha-1) was recorded in 20 cm × 15 cm spacing which was at par with the grain yield (3.52 t ha-1) in 20 cm × 10 cm spacing. The 20 cm × 10 cm spacing also produced the highest straw yield (4.88 t ha-1) and biological yield (8.40 t ha-1). The lowest grain, straw and biological yields were recorded at the wider spacing of 20 cm × 20 cm. In contrast, the highest grain yield (3.79 t ha-1), straw yield (4.99 t ha-1) and biological yield (8.79 t ha-1) were found in 75 kg N ha-1 which was as good as the yields of 55 kg N ha-1 N+ vermicompost @1.25 t ha-1. The highest number of total tillers hill-1 (14.11) and effective tillers hill-1 (12.67) were found in the interaction effect of 20 cm × 20 cm spacing with 75 kg N ha-1. The interaction between 20 cm × 15 cm and 55 kg N ha-1 N+ vermicompost @1.25 t ha-1 gave the highest grain yield (4.58 t ha-1), straw yield (5.71 t ha-1) and biological yield (10.29 t ha-1). The lowest grain yield (2.03 t ha-1), straw yield (3.49 t ha-1) and biological yield (5.52 t ha-1) were found in the interaction between 20 cm × 20 cm and no nitrogen. Therefore, usage of 20 cm × 15 cm spacing fertilized with 55 kg N ha-1 + vermicompost @1.25 t ha-1 appeared as the promising practice of transplant Aus rice cv. (Parija) cultivation.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate how branch and stem variables contribute to grain yield in individual soybean (Glycine max) plants, cultivated at different planting densities, in a modern cultivar with indeterminate growth type. A field experiment was carried out during the 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 crop seasons, in a randomized complete block design with 12 replicates, using the cultivar NK7059 RR at four planting densities: 135, 235, 315, and 440 thousand plants per hectare. Grain yield per plant was evaluated and represented phenotypic plasticity, while the number of branches per plant, percentage of grain production in branches, and separate yield components from branches and stems were considered as the independent variables. The number of pods in branches per plant was found to be the most important variable for soybean plasticity. In addition, the number of pods per plant on stems, number of branches per plant, and the percentage of grain production in branches were also associated with plasticity. Contrastingly, the number of grains per pod and the mass of a thousand grains in the branches and stems contributed little to plasticity in 'NK7059 RR' soybean.

The research was conducted in Tamanbogo Station Research in the 2007 Rainy Season in upland rice-corn intercropping farming. The research design used Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. The treatments were 1). 15 t ha-1 manures + Residues of rock phosphate (RRP),  2). Without manures + RRP, 3). 15 t ha-1 manures + 150 kg  ha-1 SP 36 and  4). Without manures + 150 kg ha-1 SP 36. The upland rice was seeded in planting space of 25 cm x 25 cm, 2-3 seeds/hill. The land was treated with 1 t ha-1 of RP in the last farming year while SP36 was applicated each season. Urea and KCl fertilizers that were used on upland rice were 300 kg ha-1 and 100 kg ha-1, respectively while corns were fertilized with 250 kg ha-1 urea and 100 kg KCl ha-1. The research results showed that the availability of N and K nutrients in the soil at the time of before planting was low but the availability P was high. Application of manures and RRP increased C-organic, availability of P , Ca and  Cation Exchangeable Capacity in the soil. Application of 15 t ha-1 of manures with RRP increased dry biomass weight of rice and corn, there were 45.17 % and 49.23 %, respectively. The grain yield of rice and corn on the treatment of manures and RRP were not gave significant different compare to the yield was gained with SP 36  fertilizer.
