Expansive soils are very important natural geological materials used in the geotechnical applications in the worldwide. After compacting, they are used as hydraulic barriers in earth structures, such as core of earth fill dams, landfill liners, and etc. However, these soils have some defects from technical points of view. To remove the defects, one of the soil improvement methods is mixing of these soils with granular materials. In this study, pine tree sawdust was used as granular additive material to stabilize the expansive soils. The effects of pine saw dust on the volume compressibility of expansive soils were investigated by using experimental studies under laboratory conditions. The test results showed that the pine saw dust positively affected the geotechnical properties in term of volume compressibility manner. As a consequently, the geotechnical properties of the expansive soil when blended with pine tree sawdust indicates that the pine tree sawdust is a good modification material for this problematic soil.

This study consists in looking for an improvement of Archachatina margina reproductions performances by amendment of the breeding substrates. As a result, five types of substrate were prepared by soil amendment at different rates (0%, 10%, 20%, 30% et 40%) with chicken egg shell powder. On these substrates, snails were raised from spat stage until they were laid. Reproductive parameters such as: age of first laying, the number of annual laying per animal, the number of eggs per laying on the different substrates were recorded. Overall, snail laying performances improved with increasing rate of substrate amendment. However, beyond a rate of 20%, the weight of eggs laid began to decline. The chicken egg shell powder is suitable for the amendment of the breeding substrate of snails Archachatina marginata in view of an improvement in their reproductive performance. The rate of amendment recommended to this effect is 20%.

The investigation evaluated the strength benefits obtained by amending cement stabilization of an expansive soil by using saw dust ash (SDA), a waste generated in wood milling industries due to burning. The experimental program involved the preparation of cylindrical specimens of size 38 mm x 76mm for evaluating the unconfined compression strength (UCS) of the cement stabilized and amended samples cured for varying periods of 2 hours, 7, 14 and 28 days. Two cement contents of 2% and 6% by weight of soil were adopted to stabilize the soil. The SDA amended cement stabilized samples adopted SDA contents of 5%, 10% and 20% by weight of soil. Strength gain trends for the amended samples were also fitted based on the results of the UCS tests. In order to analyse benefits in pavement design and thickness reduction, the UCS values were used to predict the CBR value of the specimens based on which the reduction in pavement thickness was calculated for different traffic densities. The investigation revealed that 5% SDA amendment of cement stabilization can result in up to 26% increase in early strength and 20% increase in delayed strength. Based on the predicted CBR values, pavement thickness can be reduced up to 8.3%.
