Cooperatives are a form of social entrepreneurship. In addition to financial capital and human capital, social capital is an important factor for the sustainability of an organization. This case study aims to analyze the bonding social capital's role in cooperative development based on volunteers in KHJL, South Konawe, Indonesia. A qualitative approach was used in this study with the case study as a strategy for this research. The method of data collection is done by observing, interviewing, and studying documents. Interviews use semi-structured and in-depth. By using purposive sampling, there were eight persons to be interviewed. For the data validity and reliability to be optimal, the authors use triangulation in terms of primary and secondary data collection. Data analysis is done together, from the reduction to the presentation of the data, then there are conclusions and verification to create conclusions. It was found that the role of social capital especially trust plays an important role as bonding between members. For stakeholders, their role is continuously anticipated for the progress and development of cooperatives. Although currently, the cooperative's financial situation is not good, where timber customers have fallen dramatically and social innovation has not well worked yet. Trust in social capital is the main bonding for volunteers at KHJL, that's why KHJL is still surviving until now.

Most of the literature on the Mondragon cooperative system has largely ignored the significant role of education which gave impetus to the whole idea at the outset. Over time technical training, business skills and cooperative principles have fused together to become the engine driving Mondragon's organizations through decades of remarkable success. This paper provides a systematic analysis of these Basque developments, suggesting critical lessons and implications for cooperative development generally.

This paper explores briefly how the 'war of position' strategy advocated by neo-Marxist theoretician Antonio Gramsci may be construed as a model for the successful development of worker cooperatives. The approach can provide valuable theoretical support to the myriad pragmatic cooperative projects underway in different economic and sociopolitical contexts; it also justifies the crucial role of institutional, political and cultural supportive mechanisms in economically and democratically successful worker cooperative development. This framework identifies obstacles to worker cooperative promotion emanating from generalized First, Second and Third World scenarios. An assessmnent of the prospects of implementation of the Gramscian-inspired strategy (including potential pitfalls) concludes the paper.

PurposeThis paper explores the effect of financial support on farmer cooperative development in the Chinese context, aiming to evaluate the effectiveness of public inputs and draw implications for the sustainable development of cooperatives. The variance of the effect in different sectors, i.e. crop, forestry, husbandry, fishery and services, is investigated.Design/methodology/approachProvincial-level panel data from 2007 to 2017 are used for this study. A linear dynamic panel regression model is estimated using multiple estimation methods, i.e. the generalized method of moments (GMMs), fixed-effect model and ordinary least squares (OLS) are applied.FindingsThe empirical analyses indicate that the role of the government is important for the development of farmer cooperatives but limited in some specific aspects. First, the coverage of financial support is positively associated with the growth of cooperative population and membership size, but the strength of financial support, measured by the total amount of financial support divided by local agricultural gross domestic product (GDP), has no statistically significant effects on the development of cooperatives. Second, financial support does not exhibit significant influence on the revenue of cooperatives. Third, the magnitude of the effect of government support on cooperative development is heterogeneous across different sectors.Originality/valueThe research study adds to the institutional economics literature on the association between institutional environment and organization development by focusing on a particular and an important type of organization, i.e. farmer cooperatives. It is one of the attempts and a most extensive study to empirically investigate the role of financial support in the development of farmer cooperatives.

Purpose The purposes of this research are to investigate the relationship between strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) and development strategy and the relationship between development strategy and the success of Koperasi Unit Desa (KUD). Design/methodology/approach The sample population in this research is a village cooperative (KUD) that is located in the Indragiri Hulu Regency region. Withdrawal of the sample that is selected in this research is conducted by using the random sample method that is graded proportionately. This is done because this research has a homogeneous objective (Nazir, 1983, p. 346) and the sample retrieved is as much as 31 village cooperatives (KUD). The analysis method that is used to answer the research hypothesis is path analysis, which consists of two regression equations, namely, the influence of the variables of strength (X1), weakness (X2), opportunity (X3) and threat (X4) on the development strategy (Y1) variable and the influence of the development strategy (Y1) variable on the success of village cooperative (KUD) (Y2) variable by the hypothesis that is presented in a conceptual diagram. Findings The SWOT variable has a significance influence on the development strategy variable in the cooperative in Indragiri Hulu Regency, Riau Province, either partially or simultaneously. And among the variables, the development strategy variable has a significant influence on the success of village cooperative (KUD) in Indragiri Hulu Regency, Riau Province. Also, it was found that the SWOT variable has an indirect influence on the success of village cooperative (KUD) in Indragiri Hulu Regency, Riau Province. Originality/value To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first paper to test the relation between SWOT and the development strategy and the performance of village cooperatives in Indragiri Hulu Regency, Indonesia.
