Freshwater crabs are among the most threatened species, primarily due to their high levels of endemicity, poor dispersal ability, low fecundity and the relatively fragmented nature of freshwater ecosystems. Consequently, regional diversity of freshwater crabs can serve as surrogates for assessing the quality of aquatic habitats in the upper reaches of Baleh River in Sarawak. The six days of sampling during a scientific expedition in the area resulted in the collection of five species of freshwater crabs, including two notable discoveries. The freshwater crabs belong to the families Gecarcinucidae (Arachnothelphusa sp., Bakousa kenepai) and Potamidae (Ibanum aethes, Isolapotamon nimboni, one new genus). The formal description of the new genus and two new species will be made later in appropriate taxonomic journals. The new crab species tends to a specialist in habitat use, being found only from an unusual habitat - a sandy spring within undisturbed forests, near the Elite Honour Camp. These findings indicate that the undisturbed forest patches near the timber camp are important to support population of crabs.Keywords: Decapod crustacean, Gecarcinucidae, Potamidae, semi-terrestrial

Variability in the density and distribution of adult aquatic insects is an important factor mediating aquatic-to-terrestrial nutritional subsidies in freshwater ecosystems, yet less is understood about insect-facilitated subsidy dynamics in estuaries. We surveyed emergent (i.e. adult) aquatic insects and nearshore orb-weaving spiders of the families Tetragnathidae and Araneidae in a subtropical estuary of Florida (USA). Emergent insect community composition varied seasonally and spatially; densities were lower at high- than low-salinity sites. At high-salinity sites, emergent insects exhibited lower dispersal ability and a higher prevalence of univoltinism than low- and mid-salinity assemblages. Orb-weaving spider density most strongly tracked emergent insect density rates at low- and mid-salinity sites. Tetragnatha body condition was 96% higher at high-salinity sites than at low-salinity sites. Our findings contribute to our understanding of aquatic insect communities in estuarine ecosystems and indicate that aquatic insects may provide important nutritional subsidies to riparian consumers despite their depressed abundance and diversity compared with freshwater ecosystems.

Sacred groves are one of the finest examples of informal way of conserving the forest wealth. Baseline data collection of their diversity, distribution and regeneration capacity becomes necessary for the management and conservation of these undisturbed forest patches. In this context, the present investigation was carried out using random quadrat method in the sacred groves of Virajpet, Karnataka, India. A total of 132 tree species belonging to 113 genera and 45 families were identified within five sacred groves. Higher basal area (51.73-85.65 m2/ha) and tree density (453.33-515.9 individuals/ha) were observed as compared to other forests of Western Ghats region. The present investigation has revealed a healthy regeneration of tree species. Seedling and sapling composition differed to some extent from the mature tree species composition which could be used in predicting the future possibilities. Protection and conservation of such sacred groves should be of interest, for better regeneration of the rich diversity they harbour.

New Caledonia has an endemic opiliofauna with two named species of Triaenonychidae, 17 Troglosironidae and eight Zalmoxidae. The recent finding of Neopilionidae on Grande Terre was thus surprising, and required the formal description of a new genus, which we undertake here. Martensopsalis gen. nov. is characterized by a small unsclerotized body with a unique palp with a pointed basal apophysis on the ventral side of the femur and with a distal apophysis on the prolateral side of the patella. The distinct external morphology, simple penis and unique phylogenetic position justify the erection of the new genus with Martensopsalis dogny spec. nov. as its type species. In addition to the type locality we report several other localities of putative congeneric, yet undescribed species.

An approach is proposed for ranking the quality of freshwater ecosystems by the state of bivalve mollusks living in them. Cardioactivity indicators and accumulation of metals in the tissues of the mollusks from various waters of the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland and the Rybinsk Reservoir were used to characterize the ecosystems, and an original hyperosmotic test was used to analyze the functional state of the mollusks.

Abstract This chapter, after a general introduction to quality assessments of freshwater habitats, reviews the use of freshwater nematodes as in situ bioindicators, including in monitoring the ecological quality of freshwater habitats. By drawing on studies of nematode communities in unpolluted and polluted habitats as examples, it highlights both the different methods used to assess the quality of freshwater ecosystems and their applications. A focus of the chapter is the development of a new index that uses freshwater nematodes to assess chemically induced changes in the ecological status of freshwater habitats, the NemaSPEAR[%]-index (Nematode SPEcies At Risk).

Karagandoceratids are a rare offshoot of the Prionoceratinae, resembling that subfamily in general conch form and sutural ontogeny, but differing by possession of an acute ventral margin and an increasingly trifid ventral lobe. The systematic position of the Karagandoceratidae has been controversial [see Bartzsch and Weyer (1988) for an exhaustive review]. The nominate genus, Karagandoceras Librovitch, 1940 (type species, K. galeatum), possesses a weakly divided ventral lobe which has led authors to refer it to both the Praeglyphioceratina (Ruzhencev, 1960, 1962; Bogoslovsky, 1971; Ruzhencev and Bogoslovskaya, 1978; Bogoslovskaya et al., 1999; Kusina, 2000) and the Goniatitina (Weyer, 1965, 1972; Kullmann, 1981). Discovery of an ancestral karagandoceratid genus, gen. nov. I aff. Karagandoceras Bartzsch and Weyer, 1988, in the early Tournaisian Siphonodella sandbergi conodont Zone in Germany provided clarification on the proximate origin of Karagandoceras and provided a plausible link to the early Tournaisian prionoceratin genus Nicimitoceras Korn, 1993 (type species, Imitoceras subacre Vöhringer, 1960). Bartzsch and Weyer (1988) proposed a karagandoceratid phylogeny beginning with gen. nov. I aff. Karagandoceras in the early Tournaisian, progressing through Karagandoceras in the middle Tournaisian, and culminating with a third, descendent genus, gen. nov. II aff. Karagandoceras (typical species, Karagandoceras bradfordi Manger, 1971), early in the late Tournaisian. Bartzsch and Weyer (1988) elected to leave both the initial and final members of this lineage, gen. nov. I and gen. nov. II aff. Karagandoceras, in open nomenclature pending discovery of more completely preserved material. Discovery of superbly preserved representatives of a new species of gen. nov. II aff. Karagandoceras from the Borden Formation in northeastern Kentucky provides additional sutural and morphological details that support Bartzsch and Weyer's phylogenetic interpretation and makes formal description of this terminal karagandoceratid taxon (herein designated Masonoceras new genus) possible.

Water is the substance that made life on Earth possible. It plays a key role in both the individual and population development of all species. Water is also a critical resource for humans as populations continue to grow and climate change affects global and local water cycles. Water is a factor limiting economic development in many regions of the world. Under these conditions, good water quality becomes an extremely important factor that determines its economic utility, including water supply, recreation, and agriculture. Proper water quality maintenance of freshwater ecosystems is also very important for preserving biodiversity. The quality of water depends on many factors, the most important of which are related to human impact on water ecosystems, especially the impact of various pollutants from municipal economy, industry and agriculture. Hydrotechnical changes, such as river damming, drainage processes and water transport between catchments also have a significant impact. Water quality is also dependent on the impact of natural conditions connected, e.g., with climate, catchment, water organisms and their interactions within the food-webs, etc. This Special Issue consists of fourteen original scientific papers concerning different problems associated with the water quality of freshwater ecosystems in a temperate climate. Most of the articles deal with the relations between water quality and the structure of ecosystem biocenoses. The conclusion of these articles confirms the fact that the deterioration of water quality has a direct impact on the quantitative and qualitative structure of biocenoses. This is accompanied by a decline in biodiversity and the disappearance of rare plant and animal species. They also draw attention to the particular importance of internal physical and chemical differentiation within the aquatic ecosystem, both in horizontal and vertical dimensions. The problem of ensuring proper ecological conditions and good quality of water in freshwater aquatic ecosystems is also raised, and methods for the restoration of water bodies are presented. The majority of the research presented in this Special Issue was carried out in Central Europe, and one of the papers concerns the area of West Africa—the edge of temperate climate zone.

Amamiku, a new genus, is established for Candidiopotamon amamense Minei, 1973. Amamiku is morphologically most closely related to Candidiopotamon Bott, 1967, but they can be differentiated by their male first pleopods. A key to the genera of the Japanese true freshwater crabs is also provided.
