Abstract Background Globally, diarrheal and respiratory diseases are among the main causes of mortality and morbidity. In Uganda, cities are facing proliferation of trade in herbal medicines (HM), including those for diarrhea and/or cough. Information on the economic, and the ethnopharmacological aspects of these HM is scarce, deterring the sector from achieving optimal capacity to support national development. We profiled the anti-diarrhea and/or anti-cough HM, and the basic economic aspects of HM trade in Kampala city, to support ethnopharmacological knowledge conservation and strategic planning. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 65 herbalists using semi-structured questionnaires. This was supplemented by an observational survey using a high-resolution digital camera. Data were collected following the guidelines for research on HM, established by Uganda National Drug Authority, and World Health organization. Results Eighty-four plant species from 41 families were documented. Fabaceae and Myricaceae had the highest number of species (9, 10.7% each). Citrus limon (L.) Osbeck was the most commonly cited for cough, with a relative frequency of citation (RFC) of 1.00, and its relative medical importance was not significantly different from the other top 5 species except for Azadirachta indica A.Juss (RFC = 0.87). Entada abyssinica A. Rich (RFC = 0.97) was the most cited for diarrhea. Trees (34, 40.5%) were mostly used, and mainly harvested from wild habitats (55.2%) in 20 districts across Uganda. These HM were mainly sold as powders and concoctions, in markets, shops, pharmacies, and roadside or mobile stalls. The highest prices were Uganda Shillings (UGX) 48,000 ($13.15)/kg for Allium sativum L, and UGX 16,000 ($4.38)/kg for C. limon. All participants used HM trade as a sole source of basic needs; majority (60.0%) earned net monthly profit of UGX. 730,000 ($200) ≤ 1,460,000 ($400). The main hindrances to HM trade were the; disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic (n = 65, 100%), and the scarcity of medicinal plants (58, 89.2%). Conclusion There is a rich diversity of medicinal plant species traded in Kampala to treat diarrhea and cough. The HM trade significantly contributes to the livelihoods of the traders in Kampala, as well as the different actors along the HM value chain throughout the country.

Background and Aim: Gastrointestinal parasites identified in the wild can negatively affect host fitness, lower performance, and growth. On the other side, sympatric mammals that share habitat and resources may also cross-transmit parasites, which are often zoonotic and can contribute to morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to characterize the diversity of gastrointestinal parasites circulating in mammalian hosts in Moukalaba-Doudou National Park. Materials and Methods: We screened a total of 25 fecal samples collected from nine wild mammalian species, namely, western gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla), chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), putty-nosed monkey (Cercopithecus nictitans), African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis), African buffalo (Syncerus caffer), blue duiker (Philantomba monticola), bay duiker (Cephalophus dorsalis), and red river hog (Potamochoerus porcus) as well as people working as trackers (Homo sapiens) using direct microscopic observations following a sedimentation technique to concentrate the fecal material. Results: Of the total 25 fecal samples screened, 15 (60%) were positive for parasitic gastrointestinal infection. Based on the morphology of parasite eggs and cysts, we identified a rich diversity of nematodes, protozoans, trematodes, and cestodes, including unidentified strongyles (73%), Oesophagostomum spp. (53%), Ancylostoma spp. (27%), Trichuris spp. (13%), Ascaris spp. (13%), Mammomonogamus spp. (13%), Strongyloides spp. (47%), Balantidium coli (20%), Entamoeba coli (20%), Endolimax nana (6%), Fasciola hepatica (6%), Paramphistomum spp. (13%), and Taenia spp. (6%). Conclusion: All parasites were found at least once in one of the hosts, and most were potentially zoonotic and responsible for several diseases of public health concern. Because of the small sample size, our findings should not be considered conclusive. Nevertheless, they highlight the diversity of gastrointestinal parasites in this area.

The global recession of glaciers and perennial snowfields is reshaping mountain ecosystems. However, beyond physical changes to the landscape and altered downstream hydrology, the implications of glacier decline are poorly known. Before predictions can be made about how climate change may affect wildlife in glacier-associated ecosystems, a more thorough accounting of the role that glaciers play in species' life histories is needed. In this study, we deployed an elevational transect of wildlife cameras along the western margin of the Paradise Glacier, a rapidly receding mountain glacier on the south side of Mount Rainier, WA, USA. From June to September 2021, we detected at least 16 vertebrate species (seven birds, nine mammals) using glacier-associated habitats. While humans, and primarily skiers, were the most common species detected, we recorded 99 observations of wildlife (birds and mammals). These included three species of conservation concern in Washington: wolverine (Gulo gulo), Cascade red fox (Vulpes vulpes cascadensis), and White-tailed ptarmigan (Lagopus leucura). Collectively, our results reveal a rich diversity of wildlife using a single mountain glacier and adjacent habitat in the Pacific Northwest, emphasizing a largely overlooked risk of climate change to mountain biodiversity. We highlight the global need for similar studies to better understand the true scale of biodiversity that will be impacted by glacier recession in mountain ecosystems.

AbstractPotato onion (Allium cepa var. aggregatum G. Don) remained the most widely grown onion type in Finland up to the 1950’s, after which the more productive cultivars of common onion replaced this vegetatively propagated onion type. The Finnish accessions have been maintained in two national plant genetic resources (PGR) collections since 1990’s but new samples have been obtained still later. In this research, we analysed the genetic diversity of potato onions and shallots, grown in home gardens and in PGR collection, and compared the uniformity of the two PGR collections. One hundred ten onion samples were analysed using eight microsatellite loci, which amplified 83 alleles in total. There was a large number of genetically different samples, forming four major groups in the dendrogram. The results show that there is still a lot of genetic diversity among the Finnish potato onions, even though they are propagated vegetatively. The rich diversity in the samples obtained from citizens reflects a valuable source of genetic resources maintained by home gardeners. The national collection has been updated on the basis of the results. To ensure the preservation of the rich onion heritage, efforts are needed to increase the availability of potato onion to home gardeners and commercial growers.

Deserts, as an unexplored extreme ecosystem, are known to harbor diverse actinobacteria with biotechnological potential. Both multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens and environmental issues have sharply raised the emerging demand for functional actinobacteria. From 2000 to 2021, 129 new species have been continuously reported from 35 deserts worldwide. The two largest numbers are of the members of the genera Streptomyces and Geodermatophilus, followed by other functional extremophilic strains such as alkaliphiles, halotolerant species, thermophiles, and psychrotolerant species. Improved isolation strategies for the recovery of culturable and unculturable desert actinobacteria are crucial for the exploration of their diversity and offer a better understanding of their survival mechanisms under extreme environmental stresses. The main bioprospecting processes involve isolation of target actinobacteria on selective media and incubation and selection of representatives from isolation plates for further investigations. Bioactive compounds obtained from desert actinobacteria are being continuously explored for their biotechnological potential, especially in medicine. To date, there are more than 50 novel compounds discovered from these gifted actinobacteria with potential antimicrobial activities, including anti-MDR pathogens and anti-inflammatory, antivirus, antifungal, antiallergic, antibacterial, antitumor, and cytotoxic activities. A range of plant growth-promoting abilities of the desert actinobacteria inspired great interest in their agricultural potential. In addition, several degradative, oxidative, and other functional enzymes from desert strains can be applied in the industry and the environment. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of desert environments as a remarkable source of diverse actinobacteria while such rich diversity offers an underexplored resource for biotechnological exploitations.

AbstractGraphical AbstractSulfur Related Prokaryotes (SRP) residing in hot spring present good opportunity for exploring the limitless possibilities of integral ecosystem processes. Metagenomic analysis further expand the phylogenetic breadth of these extraordinary sulfur metabolizing microorganisms, as well a their complex metabolic networks and syntrophic interactions in environmental biosystems. Through this study, we explored and expanded the microbial genetic repertoire with focus on sulfur cycling genes through metagenomic analysis of sulfur (S) contaminated hot spring, located at the Northern Himalayas. The analysis revealed rich diversity of microbial consortia with established roles in S cycling such as Pseudomonas, Thioalkalivibrio, Desulfovibrio and Desulfobulbaceae (Proteobacteria). The major gene families inferred to be abundant across microbial mat, sediment and water were assigned to Proteobacteria as reflected from the RPKs (reads per kilobase) categorized into translation and ribosomal structure and biogenesis. Analysis of sequence similarity showed conserved pattern of both dsrAB genes (n=178) retrieved from all metagenomes while other sulfur disproportionation proteins were diverged due to different structural and chemical substrates. The diversity of sulfur oxidizing bacteria (SOB) and sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) with conserved (r)dsrAB suggests for it to be an important adaptation for microbial fitness at this site. Here, we confirm that (i) SRBs belongs to δ-Proteobacteria occurring independent LGT of dsr genes to different and few novel lineages (ii) also, the oxidative and reductive dsr evolutionary time scale phylogeny, proved that the earliest (not first) dsrAB proteins belong to anaerobic Thiobacillus with other (rdsr) oxidizers. Further, the structural prediction of unassigned DsrAB proteins confirmed their relatedness with species of Desulfovibrio (TM score= 0.86; 0.98; 0.96) and Archaeoglobus fulgidus (TM score= 0.97; 0.98). We proposed that the genetic repertoire might provide the basis of studying time scale evolution and horizontal gene transfer of these genes in biogeochemical S cycling and the complementary genes could be implemented in biotechnology and bioremediation applications.

Abstract A lignocellulolytic microbial consortium holds promise for the in situ biodegradation of crop straw and the comprehensive and effective utilization of agricultural waste. In this study, we applied metagenomics technology to comprehensively explore the metabolic functional potential and taxonomic diversity of the microbial consortia CS (cultured on corn stover) and FP (cultured on filter paper).Analyses of the metagenomics taxonomic affiliation data showed considerable differences in the taxonomic composition and functional profile of the microbial consortia CS and FP. The microbial consortia CS primarily contained members from the genera Pseudomonas, Stenotrophomonas, Achromobacter, Dysgonomonas, Flavobacterium and Sphingobacterium, as well as Cellvibrio, Azospirillum, Pseudomonas, Dysgonomonas and Cellulomonas in FP. The COG and KEGG annotation analyses revealed considerable levels of diversity. Further analysis determined that the CS consortium had an increase in the acid and ester metabolism pathways, while carbohydrate metabolism was enriched in the FP consortium. Furthermore, a comparison against the CAZy database showed that the microbial consortia CS and FP contain a rich diversity of lignocellulose degrading families, in which GH5, GH6, GH9, GH10, GH11, GH26, GH42, and GH43 were enriched in the FP consortium, and GH44, GH28, GH2, and GH29 increased in the CS consortium. The degradative mechanism of lignocellulose metabolism by the two microbial consortia is similar, but the annotation of quantity of genes indicated that they are diverse and vary greatly. The lignocellulolytic microbial consortia cultured under different carbon conditions (CS and FP) differed substantially in their composition of the microbial community at the genus level. The changes in functional diversity were accompanied with variation in the composition of microorganisms, many of which are related to the degradation of lignocellulolytic materials. The genera Pseudomonas, Dysgonomonas and Sphingobacterium in CS and the genera Cellvibrio and Pseudomonas in FP exhibited a much wider distribution of lignocellulose degradative ability.

Culture and heritage play a major role in the Malay community in terms of linguistic, art craft, traditional ceremonies, music, activities, and performing arts. The Malay folk dances are most frequently described as a way of human expression through movement and traditional elements in storytelling, ritual, feeling manifestation, and conveying the Malay manner and customs as pillars of the Malay ethnic. Joget was created based on Branyo, a famous Portuguese folk dance. It is a hybrid of culture between the West and the East, reflecting heavily the Malay identity and characteristics as the core philosophy of choreography in the routine. The new creation of Malay dance has positively impacted Malay cultural activities. It has also threatened the original dance form which is being forgotten further from the philosophy. This paper was executed using a qualitative descriptive approach. Interviews and literature reviews were used to expose the rich diversity of two-element; joget and motion capture technology. Data verification, data compilation, data comparison, and triangulation are used as a form of data analysis. The results of the study found that the practice of motion capture has been massively used in digitising intangible assets for 3D application in the form of gaming, video interactive, education entertainment, and learning animation as a platform of education and training as a preservation and protection strategy. But motion capture technology has the potential to be explored as a medium in discovering a quality of trajectory micro visualization of joget dance movement and analyse the symbols or signs that can benefit to the young generation that provides a local sense of unity and belongingness that can help develop a new interest in enhancing cultural values and appreciation.

<p>摺扇的普及,是明代社會風尚異於前代的物質表徵之一。晚明最盛行的二種摺扇中,蘇州摺扇以書畫扇面與精製扇骨著稱,四川摺扇則以進貢聞名,明人常簡稱之為「川扇」、「蜀扇」等,川扇廣義上亦包括各地的仿製品。過往對中國摺扇的研究,多側重扇面書畫藝術與江南製扇工藝,對明代社會生活與物質文化的討論,則一般認為明代宮廷品味的時尚影響、文化底蘊相對不高,川扇不重書畫,又與明代宮廷關係密切,其興衰歷史、風格特點、文化內涵皆未得到充分探討。本文將考證川扇的興衰歷史,並梳理文獻、圖像中川扇的特徵,與明墓屢見出土的無書畫金面摺扇實物比對,指出後者應屬川式扇,並辨析川扇與日本、蘇州、杭州、榮昌等地摺扇的關係,思考不以書畫著稱的川扇在中國摺扇史中的地位,也探究川扇作為方物、貢品、賜物、禮物、商品等在明代的社會文化內涵。川扇大致發端於明初,此後進貢宮廷並成為時尚,作為明代高檔無書畫摺扇的代表,是蘇州書畫扇以外,明代摺扇發展的另一重要線索,體現了明代摺扇文化的豐富性,還對杭州摺扇影響深遠;川扇到晚明已與國計民生、世風人情有深密的交織,後隨明亡而衰落,是明代物質文化中極富時代特色的內容。</p> <p>&nbsp;</p><p>The unprecedented prevalence of folding fans marked one of the significant developments in social customs in the Ming dynasty. Folding fans made in Suzhou and Sichuan were the most famous ones in the late Ming. Suzhou folding fans were renowned for fan leaves decorated with calligraphy and painting and for delicate fan frames, while Sichuan folding fans were famous as tribute to the imperial court. The latter were usually abbreviated as &ldquo;Chuan fans&rdquo; or &ldquo;Shu fans&rdquo; in Ming sources. In a broad sense, Chuan fans also included folding fans in the Sichuan style made in other places in the late Ming. The history, features and culture of Chuan fans have not been fully examined for two reasons. First, past research has mainly focused on literati fan calligraphy and painting and the fan-making craft in Jiangnan. And, second, Chuan fans had close association with the court, but the tastes of Ming court has been generally disregarded by scholars as lacking in cultural depth. Drawing on texts and images, this essay sorts out the history and characteristics of Chuan fans, and links them with the folding fans excavated from Ming tombs, which feature golden leaves without calligraphy and painting. This paper also explores the connections between Chuan fans and those produced in Japan, Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Rongchang, and considers the broader place of Chuan fans in the history of Chinese folding fans. Furthermore, this essay explores the social and cultural implications of Chuan fans in the Ming dynasty as local specialties, tributes, bestowals, gifts, commodities and so on. Chuan fans generally appeared in the early Ming, and then became tribute goods as well as trendy items. Representing luxury folding fans that did not have painting or calligraphy, Chuan fans were no less important than the art-adorned Suzhou folding fans. indicating the rich diversity of Ming folding fan culture. Chuan fans also had a deep influence on the subsequent development of Hangzhou folding fans. By the late Ming, Chuan fans had already been closely connected with many aspects of Ming society. As the Ming dynasty fell, Chuan fans also declined, thus remaining of the unique elements of Ming material culture.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>
