Helically twisted conductive nanocarbon materials are applicable to optoelectronic and electromagnetic molecular devices working on the nanometer scale. Herein, we report the synthesis of per-peri-perbenzo[5]- and [9]helicenes in addition to previously reported π-extended [7]helicene. The homogeneously π-extended helicenes can be regarded as helically fused oligo-phenanthrenes. The HOMO−LUMO gap decreased significantly from 2.14 to 1.15 eV with increasing helical length, suggesting the large effective conjugation length (ECL) of the π-extended helical framework. The large ECL of π-extended helicenes is attributed to the large orbital interactions between the phenanthrene subunits at the 9- and 10-positions, which form a polyene-like electronic structure. Based on the experimental results and DFT calculations, the ultrafast decay dynamics on the sub-picosecond timescale were attributed to the low-lying conical intersection.

We have designed and synthesized an anthracene-based zwitterion, 2-methyl-2-azoniaanthracene-7-olate. The zwitterion shows amphoteric redox properties and low-energy light absorption originating from the small HOMO‒LUMO energy gap of ca. 1.7 eV. DFT calculations show that the combination of replacing the C–H with N+–Me and introducing O− is necessary to alter the electronic structure and properties of anthracene significantly.

Currently, Doi Chaang village is the biggest area producing coffee in Thailand. Throughout seed to cup the pulp must be removed from coffee cherry after harvesting and left as waste. Tannin is one of various composition in coffee pulp which is affected by soil nutrition and pH. In this study, we have characterized the amount of tanin in coffee pulp using UV-Visible spectroscopy and electronic structure calculation. The results showed that coffee pulp consist of 5.68% tannin . It was determined to condense tannin form. Moreover, the pH of soil after treated with modified coffee pulp with water, Ca(OH)2, Na2S2O5, 2% Ca(OH)2, and 2% Na2S2O5 is higher than that with non-modified case. Likewise, DFT calculations predicted the structure of tannin with smaller HOMO-LUMO gap in the condense tannin.

We calculate the band alignment of the newly predicted phosphorene-like puckered monolayers with G0W0 according to the electron affinity rule and examine trends in the electronic structure. Our results give guidance for heterojunction design.
