Abstract In the present contribution Castigliano’s theorem is extended to find more accurate results for the deflection curves of beam-type structures. The notion extension in the context of the second Castigliano’s theorem means that all stress components are included for the computation of the complementary strain energy, and not only the dominant axial stress and the shear stress. The derivation shows that the partial derivative of the complementary strain energy with respect to a scalar dummy parameter is equal to the displacement field multiplied by the normalized traction vector caused by the dummy load distribution. Knowing the Airy stress function of an isotropic beam as a function of the bending moment, the normal force, the shear force and the axial and vertical load distributions, higher-order formulae for the deflection curves and the cross section rotation are obtained. The analytical results for statically determinate and indeterminate beams for various load cases are validated by analytical and finite element results. Furthermore, the results of the extended Castigliano theory (ECT) are compared to Bernoulli–Euler and Timoshenko results, which are special cases of ECT, if only the energies caused by the bending moment and the shear force are considered. It is shown that lower-order terms for the vertical deflection exist that yield more accurate results than the Timoshenko theory. Additionally, it is shown that a distributed load is responsible for shrinking or elongation in the axial direction.

Remote laboratories are increasingly being used in academic courses, especially in science and engineering. New control systems allow the development of even complex experiments with a low cost. In this paper we present a remote laboratory that reproduces a small-scale photovoltaic system, including a solar panels and lights, a charge controller, a battery and a dummy load. A Raspberry PI microcontroller is used to send the different inputs to the laboratory, handling commands, measuring some electrical quantities and provide remote access via the web. The laboratory, developed with the involvement of graduating students, will be used in the Master courses of electrical engineering. Particular attention has been paid on the development of hardware and software, to use the developed laboratory as a model for the realization of other experiments.

A long pulse ECRH system with a goal of 140GHz 4MW 100~1000s has been developed to meet the requirement of steady-state operation on EAST. Gycom gyrotrons are employed in the No.1 and No.3 systems, CPI gyrotrons are used in the No.2 and No.4 systems. The development of the two Gycom gyrotron systems has been finished. The first short pulse EC wave injection has been demonstrated successfully during the EAST 2015 Spring campaign. In the commissioning and operation towards steady-state operation, 0.4MW 100s has been injected to plasma successfully by using the No.1 system, 4.7keV 102s L-mode and 102s H-mode plasma have been achieved on EAST with the help of ECRH. Recently, a longest pulse of 0.55MW 1000s has been obtained based on calorimetric dummy load measurements on the No.3 gyrotron. The No.2 gyrotron also has been installed and partially tested, 500kW 80s has been demonstrated in the dummy load. The remaining No.4 gyrotron will be ready to test in 2018 or 2019. The whole 4MW system will be completed within two years. The 400s fully non-inductive H-mode operation would be expected in the next four years in the condition of fully tungsten diverter on EAST.

Abstract A gyrotron and a matching optics unit (MOU) for the multi-frequency electron cyclotron heating and current drive (ECH/CD) system in JT-60SA have been developed successfully. The gyrotron demonstrated stable operation at high powers of 1.5 MW for 5 s and 1.9 MW for 1 s at 110 GHz. To obtain high HE11 mode purity (> 90%) at the outlet of the waveguide in the ECH/CD launcher, a MOU for operating at three frequencies of 82 GHz, 110 GHz, and 138 GHz that includes three pairs of water-cooled phase correcting mirrors has been developed, which allows the mirrors to be changed without opening the evacuated MOU. The mode purity at the inlet of a dummy load in the transmission line was evaluated at high-power and an HE11 mode purity of > 90% was obtained at three frequencies.
