On August 21, 2020, a landslide occurred in Zhonghai village of Hanyuan County, Sichuan Province, China. The landslide is triggered by two successive rounds of heavy rainfall. This landslide can be clearly divided into an initial landslide and a main landslide. The main landslide is activated by the intense impact and overloading of the initial landslide. The depth-integrated continuum method is adopted to simulate the dynamic process. Due to the complicated failure process, it is found that there is no proper unified parameters in Coulomb model which could well reproduce the two successive landslides. It implies that the dynamic process of landslides is highly associated with the characteristics of sliding bodies. Here, an implement of variable frictional coefficients for different parts is proposed and the parameters are calibrated. It is demonstrated that results from numerical modeling match well with the field investigation. The complicated landslides in two different stage can both be efficiently revealed by depth-integrated continuum modeling.

This paper presents the results of numerical modeling and full-scale experiments of the failure process of a glued laminated timber beam with rigid joint in the middle. All the connecting parts are made of carbon fiber. The structural analysis is done with the finite element method (ANSYS software). The nonlinear problem was solved. The contact interaction of the structural elements in the process of deformation and fracture, as well as orthotropy of the wood, the transversely isotropic properties of the plates, and the real diagrams of the deformation of carbon fiber dowel pins were taken into account. The influence of the structural parameters of the joint on the position of the most loaded dowel pin in the joint and the bearing capacity of the general structure are investigated. To verify the structural analysis results, field tests were carried out before destruction by a stepwise increasing load on a personally designed stand. The destruction of the structure occurred according to the forecast of the numerical model as a result of the mutual slip of the glued wood layers and the destruction of the polymer matrix of the glued dowel pins with the beginning of the formation of plastic joints and the formation of cracks in the wood at the junction.

AbstractHuman activities have been a main cause of floral and faunal species extinction and loss of local and global biodiversity. Habitat and population can become fragmented and isolated under anthropogenic disturbances. In this study, we focus on the effect of human activities on the habitat and population of the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) in the north slopes of Daxiangling Mountains, Sichuan province, China. Based on eight months of field investigation in 2004, we found that the distribution of the giant panda population has been limited to remnants of habitat due to human activities such as road construction, mining and hydropower stations. There is 100.60 km2 area suitable for the giant panda (including moderately suitable, suitable and most suitable), which only accounts for 21.33% of the bamboo area. Based on a dispersal model COST, there were 79.94 km2 areas (17.12%) (including moderately suitable, suitable and most suitable) for giant panda utilization in reality. Only 16.35 km2 areas (3.5%) of total bamboo area were most suitable. The areas that suitable for panda had decreased 20.66 km2 from 2000 in total due to people activities. The results of this study can be used to provide basic information to build nature reserve for protecting giant panda in Daxiangling Mountains.

The drilling mud invasion is a dynamic process varying with time and reveal the permeability or the relatively permeability of the formation saturated with fluid. The mud invasion profile denotes the water saturation change with the radial distance from the borehole wall. The logging with the shallow depth of investigation (DOI), such as density logging, neutron logging and shallow electrical logging, often detects the information of the flushed zone. We chose DOI logging to model the slope invasion profile with the hyperbolic secant function, and the calculated logging reading comparing from the real logging reading to optimize the invasion profile. The results show that the mud invasion profile and the invasion depth are strongly affected by porosity, where the invasion depth reduces with porosity adding.
