The present work deals with the modeling of the aerodynamic sound generated by the propellers of small-size drones, taking into account the effects of horizontal forward flight with negative pitch and of installation on supporting struts. Analytical aeroacoustic formulations are used, dedicated to the loading noise. The fluctuating lift forces on the blades are expanded as circular distributions of acoustic dipoles, the radiated field of which is calculated by using the free-space Green’s function. This provides descriptions of the sound field, valid in the entire space. The stationary mean-flow distortions responsible for the lift fluctuations and at the origin of the sound are estimated from existing numerical flow simulations and from ad hoc models. Installation and forward-flight effects are found to generate much more sound than the steady loading on the blades associated with thrust. Therefore, the models are believed reliable fast-running tools that could be used for preliminary low-noise design through repeated parametric calculations, or for noise-impact estimates corresponding to prescribed urban traffic.

The paper deals with the problem of estimating the sound field generated by a limited region of turbulence in an infinitely long, straight, hard-walled pipe. The field is analysed in a co-ordinate system moving with the assumed uniform mean flow, and the possibility of eddy convection relative to that reference system is considered. Large-scale turbulence is shown to induce plane acoustic waves of intensity proportional to the sixth power of flow velocity. The same is true of small-scale turbulence of low characteristic frequency. In both cases convective effects increase the acoustic output and distribute the bulk of the energy in a mode propagating upstream against the mean flow. Small-scale turbulence of higher frequency excites more modes, the sound increasing with very nearly the eighth power of velocity (U7.7) as soon as the second mode is excited. In the limit, when more than about 20 modes are excited, the energy output is unaffected by the constraint of the pipe walls, increasing with the eighth power of velocity, and being substantially amplified by convective motion.

An aerodynamic sound generated by a flow inside a duct is one of the noise pro- blems. Flows in ducts with uneven surfaces such as grooves or cavities can be seen in various industrial devices and industrial products such as air-conditioning equipment in various plants or piping products. In this article, we have performed experiments and simulations to clarify acoustic and flow-induced sound characteris- tics of L-shaped duct with a shallow cavity installed. The experiments and simula- tions were performed under several inflow velocity conditions. The results show that the characteristics of the flow-induced sound in the duct are strongly affected by the acoustic characteristics of the duct interior sound field and the location of the shallow cavity. Especially, it was found that the acoustic characteristics were af- fected by the location of the shallow cavity in the frequency range between 1000 Hz and 1700 Hz.

Abstract. A traditional metric used in hydrology to summarize model performance is the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE). Increasingly an alternative metric, the Kling–Gupta efficiency (KGE), is used instead. When NSE is used, NSE = 0 corresponds to using the mean flow as a benchmark predictor. The same reasoning is applied in various studies that use KGE as a metric: negative KGE values are viewed as bad model performance, and only positive values are seen as good model performance. Here we show that using the mean flow as a predictor does not result in KGE = 0, but instead KGE =1-√2≈-0.41. Thus, KGE values greater than −0.41 indicate that a model improves upon the mean flow benchmark – even if the model's KGE value is negative. NSE and KGE values cannot be directly compared, because their relationship is non-unique and depends in part on the coefficient of variation of the observed time series. Therefore, modellers who use the KGE metric should not let their understanding of NSE values guide them in interpreting KGE values and instead develop new understanding based on the constitutive parts of the KGE metric and the explicit use of benchmark values to compare KGE scores against. More generally, a strong case can be made for moving away from ad hoc use of aggregated efficiency metrics and towards a framework based on purpose-dependent evaluation metrics and benchmarks that allows for more robust model adequacy assessment.

The acoustic mechanisms of 2D and 3D edge tones and a 2D small air-reed instrument have been studied numerically with compressible Large Eddy Simulation (LES). Sound frequencies of the 2D and 3D edge tones obtained numerically change with the jet velocity well following Brown’s semi-empirical equation, while that of the 2D air-reed instrument behaves in a different manner and obeys the semi-empirical theory, so called Cremer-Ising-Coltman theory. We have also calculated aerodynamic sound sources for the 2D edge tone and the 2D air-reed instrument relying on Ligthhill’s acoustic analogy and have discussed similarities and differences between them. The sound source of the air-reed instrument is more localized around the open mouth compared with that of the edge tone due to the effect of the strong sound field excited in the resonator.

Abstract This paper focuses on the radiation modes and efficiency of propeller tonal noise. The thickness noise and loading noise model of propellers has been formulated in spherical coordinates, thereby simplifying numerical evaluation of the integral noise source. More importantly, the radiation field can be decomposed and projected to spherical harmonics, which can separate source-observer positions and enable an analysis of sound field structures. Thanks to the parity of spherical harmonics, the proposed model can mathematically explain the fact that thrusts only produce antisymmetric sound waves with respect to the rotating plane. In addition, the symmetric components of the noise field can be attributed to the thickness, as well as drags and radial forces acting on the propeller surface. The radiation efficiency of each mode decays rapidly as noise sources approach the rotating centre, suggesting the radial distribution of aerodynamic loadings should be carefully designed for low-noise propellers. The noise prediction model has been successfully applied to a drone propeller and achieved a reliable agreement with experimental measurements. The flow variables employed as an input of the noise computation were obtained with computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and the experimental data were measured in an anechoic chamber.

Urban traffic noise situations are usually visualized as conventional 2D maps or 3D scenes. These representations are indispensable tools to inform decision makers and citizens about issues of health, safety, and quality of life but require expert knowledge in order to be properly understood and put into context. The subjectivity of how we perceive noise as well as the inaccuracies in common noise calculation standards are rarely represented. We present a virtual reality application that seeks to offer an audiovisual glimpse into the background workings of one of these standards, by employing a multisensory, immersive analytics approach that allows users to interactively explore and listen to an approximate rendering of the data in the same environment that the noise simulation occurs in. In order for this approach to be useful, it should manage complicated noise level calculations in a real time environment and run on commodity low-cost VR hardware. In a prototypical implementation, we utilized simple VR interactions common to current mobile VR headsets and combined them with techniques from data visualization and sonification to allow users to explore road traffic noise in an immersive real-time urban environment. The noise levels were calculated over CityGML LoD2 building geometries, in accordance with Common Noise Assessment Methods in Europe (CNOSSOS-EU) sound propagation methods.

The vehicle interior noise is mainly caused by irregularity of road, engine and transmission. So it is important to study on the noise characteristics for diesel engine and identify the main noise source and investigate the effective methods to control noise. In this paper, by using the measurement and analysis system, we measured the sound pressures levels and their curves the noise of a military diesel engine, then made spectral analysis and coherence analysis. The results provide bases for low noise design of this diesel engine.

Simulation analysis and experiment research are performed on the aeroacoustic noise of a landing gear component in this paper. Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) is used to produce the flow field of the model. The Ffowcs-Williams/Hawkings (FW-H) equation is used to calculate the acoustic field. The sound field radiated from the model is measured in the acoustic wind tunnel. A comparison shows that the simulation results agree well with the experiment results under the acoustic far field condition. The results show that the noise radiated from the model is broadband noise. The directivity of the noise source is like a type of dipole. The wheel is the largest contributor and the strut is the least contributor to the landing gear noise. The results can provide some reference for low noise landing gear design.
