The problem of Unequal Area Facility Layout Planning (UA-FLP) has been addressed by a large number of approaches considering a set of quantitative criteria. Moreover, more recently, the personal qualitative preferences of an expert designer or decision-maker (DM) have been taken into account too. This article deals with capturing more than a single DM’s personal preferences to obtain a common and collaborative design including the whole set of preferences from all the DMs to obtain more complex, complete, and realistic solutions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the preferences of more than one expert designer have been considered in the UA-FLP. The new strategy has been implemented on a Coral Reef Optimization (CRO) algorithm using two techniques to acquire the DMs’ evaluations. The first one demands the simultaneous presence of all the DMs, while the second one does not. Both techniques have been tested over three well-known problem instances taken from the literature and the results show that it is possible to obtain sufficient designs capturing all the DMs’ personal preferences and maintaining low values of the quantitative fitness function.

In the facility layout decisions, the previous general design principle is to minimize material handling costs, and the objective of these old models only considers the costs of loaded trip, without regard to empty vehicle trip costs, which do not meet the actual demand. In this paper, the unequal-sized unidirectional loop layout problem is analyzed, and the model of facility layout is improved. The objective of the new model is to minimize the total loaded and empty vehicle trip costs. To solve this model, a heuristic algorithm based on partheno-genetic algorithms is designed. Finally, an unequal-sized unidirectional loop layout problem including 12 devices is simulated. Comparison shows that the result obtained using the proposed model is 20.4% better than that obtained using the original model.

During a series of zooplankton surveys carried out from 2001 through 2005 off the coast of the state of Bahia, Brazil, 98 individuals of monstrilloid copepods were collected. These belong to five species (Monstrilla grandis, Cymbasoma cf. longispinosum, Cymbasoma cf. rigidum, Cymbasoma gracilis, and Cymbasoma quadridens). The first three are recorded for the first time in the Bahia coastal region. The geographical range of C. quadridens is expanded to the Brazilian northeastern coast. The results presented herein increase to nine the number of nominal species of Monstrilloida known from off Bahia; the environmental diversity of Caravelas Channel with highly productive areas and coral reef zones harbor an abundant and diverse monstrilloid fauna that should be surveyed in more detail.

Abstract The article discusses the topic of designing the optimal distribution of workstations within a production plant. A review focused on publications on this subject in the Scopus database, covering the years 1975–2017. The article presents a facility layout problem and basic principles of optimisation methods for the distribution of workstations within the factory. The author proposes a methodology for designing the optimal distribution of workstations using available optimisation methods and computer simulation. Also, directions for further research are indicated.
