Passive cooling and heating methods within buildings are studied a lot nowadays. Nevertheless, their performance considering their driving has not been deeply studied. Therefore, the performance of the most common passive heating and cooling methods is analyzed in this document. The methods are divided into three categories: operable, semi-operable, and not operable. They are studied under different conditions of operation in order to estimate their performance in terms of indoor temperature increase/decrease in a single dwelling. The study is carried out with the thermal simulation program EnergyPlus, using a dwelling in Mexico City as a case study, which is validated with literature that studied passive methods for similar climates. Furthermore, for an integrated driving, four features of operation of the passive methods are considered: mobility, maintenance, assembly, and consumables. The results show that a correct use of these features of driving might achieve a significant temperature drop in the case of cooling and a significant indoor temperature increase in the case of heating. This is reflected in a considerable amount of energy saving compared to a conventional heating/cooling heat-pump system running under regular conditions, which is taken as a reference of consumption. Thereby, it is concluded that the proper usage, considered here as the correct application of the four features of operation mainly by the occupants, might have a high influence in their performance of increase/decrease of the indoor temperature. Thus, it is highly recommended to follow up their performance once installed and not to suppose an optimal performance ever after.

In this paper, there is analyzed the results of exergy economic optimization of heat-cooling supply in building by using the solar heat pump system. It is possible to realize a system having high reliability in operation of the system. The solar heat pump system according to the present technical decision has high energy efficiency while ensuring reliability, and is useful as a domestic air conditioning and heating water heater. It can also be applied to uses such as industrial heating and cooling devices.

We herein report the development of a distributed heat pump system that can utilize a variety of renewable energy sources to meet different building heating and cooling demands (i.e., a multiple source and multiple use heat pump system, MMHP). In this system, a water circulating loop is used to connect ground heat exchangers, a unique sky-source heat pump, and various heat pumps for heating and cooling purposes to form a thermal network within a building. This distribution increases the flexibility of the system and allows an improved matching of supply and demand. To evaluate the system performance, an experimental house was constructed, and a winter field experiment was conducted. We found that the reported heat pump for floor heating achieved a stable operation with a high coefficient of performance of ~11.5, while the heat collecting operation performance of the sky-source heat pump varied significantly depending on the amount of solar radiation and the outside air temperature. Finally, since the sky-source heat pump contributes to an improvement in the whole system performance, it appears that there is still room for improved regarding the whole system performance by adjusting the operating and control strategy.

A hot-water and air-conditioning (HWAC) combined ground sourse heat pump(GSHP) system with horizontal ground heat exchanger self-designed and actualized was presented in this paper. The heat transfer performance for the heat exchanger of two different pipe arrangements, three layers and four layers, respectively, was compared. It showed that the heat exchange quantity per pipe length for the pipe arrangement of three layers and four layers are 18.0 W/m and 15.0 W/m. The coefficient of performance (COP) of unit and system could remain 4.8 and 4.2 as GSHP system for heating water, and the COP of heating and cooling combination are up to 8.5 and 7.5, respectively. The power consumption of hot-water in a whole year is 9.0 kwh/t. The economy and feasibility analysis on vertical and horizontal ground heat exchanger were made, which showed that the investment cost per heat exchange quantity of horizontal ground heat exchanger is 51.4% lower than that of the vertical ground heat exchanger, but the occupied area of the former is 7 times larger than the latter's.

This paper presents an analysis of economic and energy between a ground-coupled heat pump system and other available technologies, such as natural gas, biomass, and diesel, providing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning to an office building. All the proposed systems are capable of reaching temperatures of 22 °C/25 °C in heating and cooling modes. EnergyPlus software was used to develop a simulation model and carry out the validation process. The first objective of the paper is the validation of the numerical model developed in EnergyPlus with the experimental results collected from the monitored building to evaluate the system in other operating conditions and to compare it with other available technologies. The second aim of the study is the assessment of the position of the low enthalpy geothermal system proposed versus the rest of the systems, from energy, economic, and environmental aspects. In addition, the annual heating and cooling seasonal energy efficiency ratio (COPsys) of the ground-coupled heat pump (GCHP) shown is higher than the others. The economic results determine a period between 6 and 9 years for the proposed GCHP system to have lower economic cost than the rest of the systems. The results obtained determine that the GCHP proposed system can satisfy the thermal demand in heating and cooling conditions, with optimal environmental values and economic viability.

An air source heat pump system (ASHPS) was set up, which provided space heating and cooling, as well as hot water for an office building in Tianjin. Its operating performance in winter was evaluated based on test data. Considering the local abundant solar radiation and the way to provide energy in an office building, a simulation study was carried out on the combsystem of ASHP and flat plate air collector (FPAC). The effects of collector area and its outlet parameters on the heating performance of ASHP were studied, and the favorable operating and matching mode were recommended. The results indicate that ASHPS is a technically viable method in Tianjin in winter, but not economically, and the air-solar combsystem should be taken into account for its massive replacement for conventional energy.

This paper progresses to dynamically simulate and study the heat transfer process of horizontal ground heat exchangers in the multi-grooves by the use of numerical simulation based on the layout and heat extraction or rejection conditions of horizontal ground heat exchangers under the artificial lake. Effect of buried pipe type and groove spacing on the heat exchanger process is analyzed in detail. The influence of annual average water temperature change on the surrounding environment is evaluated with the introduction of parameters including summer weekly average maximum temperature rise and winter weekly average maximum temperature drop, in which can take the technical supports for the design of horizontal ground source heat pump system.

Abstract Wall and roof components made of steel sandwich elements are firmly established in industrial and commercial construction. They are cost-effective and characterized by excellent physical properties. Here, hybrid approaches from heating- and cooling ceiling construction were examined for the solar thermal activation of sandwich elements. Besides the implementation of the solar components, the connection to and the optimization of the system technology was focused. In addition, alternative piping materials were investigated numerically and experimentally. The performance as well as the static and thermo-hydraulic behavior of the new active components were simulatively and experimentally examined, and the economic viability of the variants was also checked. With the newly developed solar sandwich elements, an overall energy concept was developed with connection variants to the building services system, control and storage technology. Steel sandwich elements with mineral fiber core are well suited for the hidden integration of component parts such as pipe registers and heat conducting plates. The functionality of the component has been proven, the implementation of heat exchanger leads to considerable heat gains. In combination with a brine-to-water heat pump system, the solar panel can provide for a more sustainable operation and a significant size reduction of the geothermal source.

This paper discusses the research and the state-of-art practices on ground source heat pump systems (GSHP) in China. It introduces the Chinese patents on GSHP. The GSHP development policies of China, including incentive mechanism, relevant codes and regulations, are also introduced. In addition, this paper discusses and summarizes the shortages and imperfects of the current research of the GSHP system and gives some recommendations for future work. At last, the authors give some advice for the development of ground source heat pump. For more reliable statistics on geothermal energy use, the obligation to supply an installation report to the relevant authority should also be imposed on the rural buildings besides urban buildings. GSHP systems are suitable for heating and cooling of buildings and so could play a significant role in reducing CO2 emissions.
