The luminescence properties of RAl3(BO3)4 (RAB, with R = Pr, Eu, Tb, Dy, Tm, Yb) huntite crystals grown from K2Mo3O10 flux were systematically characterized in order to investigate their excitation dynamics, with particular reference to the concentration quenching that in these systems is incomplete. To this purpose, selected excitation, emission, and decay profile measurements on diluted R:YAB crystals were carried out and compared with those of the concentrated compounds. The effects of the energy transfer processes and of the lattice defects, as well as the ion-lattice interactions, have been taken into consideration in order to account for the experimental results.

In order to investigate the effect of Ce3+ concentration on the emission properties of Er3+/Yb3+ codoped NaYF4 nanocrystals, Ce3+/Er3+/Yb3+ tri-doped NaYF4 nanocrystals were prepared through a facile EDTA-assisted hydrothermal method. The upconversion (UC) and the near infrared (NIR) emission properties of Er3+ ions were systematically investigated in the NaYF4:Ce3+/Er3+/Yb3+ nanocrystals. Under 980 nm excitation, with the increasing of Ce3+ concentration, the emission intensity of Er3+ at 1550 nm (4I13/2 → 4I15/2) band increases initially and then decreases. The increase of the fluorescence intensity of 1550 nm is due to the energy transfer between Er3+ and Ce3+ ions: Er3+:4I11/2 +Ce3+:2F5/2 → Er3+:4I13/2 +Ce3+:2F7/2. But when Ce3+ doping concentration is 2.0%, the cross relaxation:Er3+:4I13/2 +Ce3+:2F5/2 →Er3+:4I15/2 +Ce3+:2F7/2 happens, which depopulates the 4I13/2 level of Er3+ and results in the decrease of the emission intensity of Er3+ at 1550 nm band. Meanwhile, incorporation of Ce3+ dramatically decreases the visible UC emission intensity. A possible emission mechanism was proposed.

In this study, 1,10-phenanthroline molecules were introduced in the interlayer space of a paramagnetic synthetic saponite clay containing both Eu3+ and Gd3+ ions in structural positions. Two samples with different loading of phenanthroline dye were prepared. The resulting hybrid materials possessed improved optical emission properties due to an efficient antenna effect from the phenanthroline to the Eu3+ centers; this effect was demonstrated to be higher than the metal-to-metal Gd3+-Eu3+ energy transfer previously studied. Insights on the relaxometric properties in aqueous solution of the solids after incorporation of the antenna groups were also obtained through NMR relaxometric analyses.

The quenching of the iodine fluorescence spectrum by various inert gases and oxygen has been studied with a view to obtaining information on the efficiencies of vibration energy transfer processes in this system. Preliminary results here presented are in agreement with earlier work of Rössler and Eliaschevich and indicate that the transfer processes are very efficient. A kinetic scheme is proposed to account for the various possible quenching and transfer processes and it is shown that this is in agreement with experimental results.
