This paper proposes an asymmetrical pulse-width modulation (PWM) strategy for current-fed dual-active bridge (CFDAB) converters applied to energy storage systems (ESS). The ESS application considers low-voltage and high-capacity batteries, for low-power applications, such as data centers, residential photovoltaic systems (PV), and uninterruptable power supplies (UPS). The proposed modulation permits the use of an isolation transformer with negligible leakage inductance and, therefore, avoids the use of auxiliary circuits such as snubbers, active-clamp, or resonant cells. Hence, the converter implementation is simplified. The modulation also benefits the design of the control system because the converter can be modeled and controlled using simple strategies. A straightforward, large-signal model for the battery charge mode, which is valid over all the operation range of the converter, is obtained. Also, the converter operates with a fixed dc bus voltage on both charge and discharge modes. These characteristics represent a significant advantage when the CFDAB with PWM modulation is compared with phase-shifted or frequency modulations, commonly applied in these converters.

Binders play an important role in electrode processing for energy storage systems. While conventional binders often require hazardous and costly organic solvents, there has been increasing development toward greener and less expensive binders, with a focus on those that can be processed in aqueous conditions. Due to their functional groups, many of these aqueous binders offer further beneficial properties, such as higher adhesion to withstand the large volume changes of several high-capacity electrode materials. In this review, we first discuss the roles of binders in the construction of electrodes, particularly for energy storage systems, summarize typical binder characterization techniques, and then highlight the recent advances on aqueous binder systems, aiming to provide a stepping stone for the development of polymer binders with better sustainability and improved functionalities.

The penetration of solar energy in the modern power system is still increasing with a fast growth rate after long development due to reduced environmental impact and ever-decreasing photovoltaic panel cost. Meanwhile, distribution networks have to deal with a huge amount and frequent fluctuations of power due to the intermittent nature of solar energy, which influences the grid stability and could cause a voltage rise in the low-voltage grid. In order to reduce these fluctuations and ensure a stable and reliable power supply, energy storage systems are introduced, as they can absorb or release energy on demand, which provides more control flexibility for PV systems. At present, storage technologies are still under development and integrated in renewable applications, especially in smart grids, where lowering the cost and enhancing the reliability are the main tasks. This study reviews and discusses several active power control strategies for hybrid PV and energy storage systems that deliver ancillary services for grid support. The technological advancements and developments of energy storage systems in grid-tied PV applications are also reviewed.
