The June 2016 death of our esteemed colleague, Dr Irving I. Gottesman, was felt as an extreme loss at so many levels by colleagues, students, friends, and family across the globe. Irv's stellar contributions to the field of twin research will continue to be remembered and cited for many years to come. In commemoration of his life and work, I organized a symposium at the 16th meeting of the International Society for Twin Studies, held in Madrid, Spain, November 16–18, 2017. The panelists included mostly former students, as well as colleagues, who presented their scientific research and personal remarks reflecting Irv's profound influence in shaping their lives and careers. A chronology of Irv's academic positions and honors is included in the introduction to this special issue of Twin Research and Human Genetics, followed by brief sketches of the panel participants; their scholarly papers and personal reflections follow.

In this context, we will share results from a scientometric study on outputs from University of Lyon scientific research centers conducted between 2000 and 2005.

In the early 1960s, Portugal saw a rise in scientific research on architecture and urbanism at the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil; LNEC), fundamental to support the Government in establishing a national program for housing, which continued until the fall of the Dictatorship in 1974. Lacking tradition in scientific studies in architecture and urbanism, a group of young architects with knowledge of references from international researchers and research centers gathered encouragement and opportunities to develop their own research works and methodologies and, later, to question the application of such scientific methods. This article aims to identify and discuss the strategies and methodologies explored to develop these seminal researches, retrieving and reappraising LNEC’s archived documents and oral testimonials from former researchers. We aim at exposing the foundations of Portuguese scientific research on architecture and urbanism and its contributions to an international audience.

In this paper, the friction coefficient and the cyclic response of different interfaces for friction devices are investigated by means of experimental tests under displacement control. In particular, six interfaces have been tested: steel–steel, brass–steel, sprayed aluminum–steel and three different rubber based friction materials adopted, respectively, in automotive applications, electrical machines and applications requiring low wearing.Static and kinetic friction coefficients have been evaluated and the influence of the interface pressure has been analyzed. The variation of the sliding force during the cyclic loading history has been investigated by comparing also the response coming from the use of different washers: circular flat washers and cone shaped annular disc springs. The work is aimed at the investigation of friction materials to be applied within the connecting elements of beam-to-column joints according to the double split tee configuration with friction pads.

The article is a chronologically systematized review of the sources of the Soviet and modern periods for the study of ethnocultural dynamics in the Republic of Khakassia. A separate block is devoted to studies of modern ethnic processes at the turn of the 20th‑21st centuries. The article presents the specifics of the study of the ethnocultural dynamics of the capital and regional research centers. Attention to ethnic processes in the republic is fixed from the standpoint of history, ethnopsychology, sociology, cultural studies, and anthropology. The main problems and trends in the study of ethnic processes in the region are considered. Priority research areas related to the study of ethnic identity and the specifics of its formation are highlighted as the features of modern scientific research within the framework of this issue in the context of modern processes of globalization and transformation. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of interethnic relations and migration processes taking place in the Republic of Khakassia
