Rechargeable zinc-air batteries are promising for energy storage and portable electronic applications because of their good safety, high energy density, material abundance, low cost, and environmental friendliness. A series of alkaline gel polymer electrolytes formed from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and different amounts of terpolymer composed of butyl acrylate, vinyl acetate, and vinyl neodecanoate (VAVTD) was synthesized applying a solution casting technique. The thin films were doped with KOH 12M, providing a higher amount of water and free ions inside the electrolyte matrix. The inclusion of VAVTD together with the PVA polymer improved several of the electrical properties of the PVA-based gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs). X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and attenuated total reflectance- Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) tests, confirming that PVA chains rearrange depending on the VAVTD content and improving the amorphous region. The most conducting electrolyte film was the test specimen 1:4 (PVA-VAVTD) soaked in KOH solution, reaching a conductivity of 0.019 S/cm at room temperature. The temperature dependence of the conductivity agrees with the Arrhenius equation and activation energy of ~0.077 eV resulted, depending on the electrolyte composition. In addition, the cyclic voltammetry study showed a current intensity increase at higher VAVTD content, reaching values of 310 mA. Finally, these gel polymer electrolytes were tested in Zn–air batteries, obtaining capacities of 165 mAh and 195 mAh for PVA-T4 and PVA-T5 sunk in KOH, respectively, at a discharge current of −5 mA.

A crosslinked membrane based on renewable, degradable and environmentally friendly soybean protein isolate was formed by solution casting method. A series of gel polymer electrolytes were prepared with the crosslinked membranes saturated with 1 mol·L−1 Li2SO4. The solid-state electric double-layer capacitors were fabricated with the prepared gel polymer electrolytes and activated carbon electrodes. The optimized solid-state supercapacitor delivered a single electrode specific capacitance of 115.17 F·g−1 at a current density of 1.0 A·g−1, which was higher than the supercapacitor assembled with the commercial separator in 1 mol·L−1 Li2SO4. The solid-state supercapacitor exhibited an outstanding cycling stability, indicating that the gel polymer electrolyte based on the crosslinked soybean protein isolate membrane could be a promising separator for a solid-state supercapacitor.

Magnesium-ion conducting gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) based on PMMA with ethylene carbonate (EC) and propylene carbonate (PC) as a plasticizing solvent were prepared via the solution casting technique. Mg(CF3SO3)2 salt was used as source of magnesium ions, Mg2+. The variation of conductivity with salt concentrations, from 5 wt.% to 30 wt.% was studied. The gel polymer electrolyte with composition 20 wt.% of Mg(CF3SO3)2 exhibited the highest conductivity of 1.27 x 10-3 S cm-1 at room temperature. The conductivity-temperature dependence of gel polymer electrolyte films obeys Arrhenius behaviour with activation energy in the range of 0.18 eV to 0.26 eV. Ionic transport number was evaluated using DC polarization technique and it reveals the conducting species are predominantly ions. It is found that the ionic conductivity and transport properties of the prepared GPEs are consistent with the X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) studies.

Lithium-ion hybrid capacitors (LICs) are regarded as one of the most promising next generation energy storage devices. Commercial activated carbon materials with low cost and excellent cycling stability are widely used as cathode materials for LICs, however, their low energy density remains a significant challenge for the practical applications of LICs. Herein, Na0.76V6O15 nanobelts (NaVO) were prepared and combined with commercial activated carbon YP50D to form hybrid cathode materials. Credit to the synergism of its capacitive effect and diffusion-controlled faradaic effect, NaVO/C hybrid cathode displays both superior cyclability and enhanced capacity. LICs were assembled with the as-prepared NaVO/C hybrid cathode and artificial graphite anode which was pre-lithiated. Furthermore, 10-NaVO/C//AG LIC delivers a high energy density of 118.9 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 220.6 W kg−1 and retains 43.7 Wh kg−1 even at a high power density of 21,793.0 W kg−1. The LIC can also maintain long-term cycling stability with capacitance retention of approximately 70% after 5000 cycles at 1 A g−1. Accordingly, hybrid cathodes composed of commercial activated carbon and a small amount of high energy battery-type materials are expected to be a candidate for low-cost advanced LICs with both high energy density and power density.
