The city of Ivanec is located between valley of the Bednja River and Mt. Ivanščica and this area can be prone to significant seismic site amplification due to local site characteristics. This study presents the first assessment of seismic site amplification for the city of Ivanec by the microtremor horizontal-to-vertical-spectral-ratio (HVSR) method and the equivalent-linear (EQL) site response analysis. Based on microtremor measurements and HVSR analysis, fundamental soil frequency and HVSR peak amplitude maps indicate potentially seismic danger zones. The 1-D EQL site response analysis was performed using multiple suites of earthquake ground motions scaled to the 95- and 475-year return periods of peak ground accelerations. Site amplification maps at the predominant peak frequency and ground surface indicate two microzones, one with high amplification in the central part of the city due to soft soil characteristics, and the other with small amplification in the transitional zone from alluvial basin towards the foothills of Mt. Ivanščica. HVSR peak amplitudes and site response peak amplifications showed similar spatial distributions with similar predominant peak frequencies but with different amplitude levels. Site amplification maps provided significant information about potential resonance effects for structures of certain heights that can be correlated with the local ground shaking characteristics.

The city of Banda Aceh is potentially exposed to a significant seismic hazard of seismic site amplification. Estimation of seismic site amplification of the city is urgently required for any mitigation efforts as the city is founded on a thick, soft layer. This study aims to estimate seismic site amplification of Banda Aceh's soil. Analytical models have demonstrated that they can simulate reasonably well the seismic ground motions amplification. The most widely used model is the equivalent linear approach. The approach computes the ground response of horizontally layered soil deposits subjected to transient and vertically propagating shear waves through a one-dimensional soil column. As aforementioned, this study focuses on Banda Aceh-Indonesia which is founded on thick alluvium. Three actual historical time histories and three developed sub-surface models were used to estimate the seismic site amplification of Banda Aceh's soft soil. The used time histories are of 2012 M8.1 Simeulue earthquake, 2013 M6.0 Mane-Geumpang earthquake and 2013 M6.2 Bener Meriah earthquake. Three sub-surface models of three separate sites across the city of Banda Aceh were developed. The site response analysis results reveal the ground motions amplification of Banda Aceh's soils of up to 4.3. Thus, applying the seismic site amplification for structural design at Banda Aceh can be further works.

Small-strain damping profiles developed from geotechnical laboratory testing have been observed to be smaller than the damping inferred from the observed site amplification from downhole array recordings. This study investigates the high-frequency spectral decay parameter ( κ0) of earthquake motions from soil sites and evaluates the use of κ0 to constrain the small-strain damping profile for one-dimensional site response analysis. Using data from 51 sites from the Kiban-Kyoshin strong motion network (KiK-net) array in Japan and six sites from California, a relationship was developed between κ0 at the surface and both the 30-m time-averaged shear wave velocity ( V s30) and the depth to the 2.5 km/s shear wave velocity horizon ( Z2.5). This relationship demonstrates that κ0 increases with decreasing V s30 and increasing Z2.5. An approach is developed that uses this relationship to establish a target κ0 from which to constrain the small-strain damping profile used in one-dimensional site response analysis. This approach to develop κ0-consistent damping profiles for site response analysis is demonstrated through a recent site amplification study of Central and Eastern North America for the NGA-East project.
