Muscle injuries are the most common trauma in team and individual sports. The muscles most frequently affected are those of the lower limb, and in particular hamstrings, adductors, rectus femoris and calf muscles. Although several scientific studies have tried to propose different rehabilitation protocols, still too often the real rehabilitation process is not based on scientific knowledge, especially in non-elite athletes. Moreover, the growing use of physical and instrumental therapies has made it increasingly difficult to understand what can be truly effective. Therefore, the aim of the present paper is to review proposed therapeutic algorithms for muscle injuries, proposing a concise and practical summary. Following a three-phase rehabilitation protocol, this review aims to describe the conservative treatment of indirect structural muscle injuries, which are the more routinely found and more challenging type. For each phase, until return to training and return to sport are completed, the functional goal, the most appropriate practitioner, and the best possible treatment according to current evidence are expressed. Finally, the last section is focused on the specific exercise rehabilitation for the four main muscle groups with a structured explanatory timetable.

Context: Muscle injuries of the hip stabilizers are considered rare in sport. Objective: This report presents a previously unreported case of a contact injury resulting in acute strain of quadratus femoris, obturator externus, and inferior gemellus in an amateur Australian rules football player. Design: Level 4—case report. Case Presentation: A player was tackled ipsilateral to the injured leg, while in hip flexion in a lunged position. The case describes the diagnostic process, initial management, and return to play for this athlete. Results: Following rehabilitation, the player was able to return to sport at 8 weeks without ongoing issues. Conclusions: A literature search for sports-related contact injuries to either muscle returned only one result. All other documented cases of injury to these muscle groups are confined to noncontact mechanisms or delayed presentations. Despite conventional teaching, the action of the deep external rotators of the hip appears to be positionally dependent. Knowledge of this type of injury and mechanism may be useful for future clinical reasoning and differential diagnosis in patients with this type of presentation.

We propose a lower limb rehabilitation device to assist people with impairment in regaining the ability of legs. The device consists of links and the installation of springs, the features are as follows: (1) it is semi-passive and home-based, allowing stroke patients to conduct lower limb movement under their own control; (2) the structure is simple and the weight is light, but it has the similar benefit as other therapeutic robots; (3) Biodex and Electromyography (EMG) are utilized to analyze the device. The result shows rectus femoris, vastus lateralis and vastus medialis muscles are well trained.

Return to play (RTP) decisions in football are currently based on expert opinion. No consensus guideline has been published to demonstrate an evidence-based decision-making process in football (soccer). Our aim was to provide a framework for evidence-based decision-making in RTP following lower limb muscle injuries sustained in football. A 1-day consensus meeting was held in Milan, on 31 August 2018, involving 66 national and international experts from various academic backgrounds. A narrative review of the current evidence for RTP decision-making in football was provided to delegates. Assembled experts came to a consensus on the best practice for managing RTP following lower limb muscle injuries via the Delphi process. Consensus was reached on (1) the definitions of ‘return to training’ and ‘return to play’ in football. We agreed on ‘return to training’ and RTP in football, the appropriate use of clinical and imaging assessments, and laboratory and field tests for return to training following lower limb muscle injury, and identified objective criteria for RTP based on global positioning system technology. Level of evidence IV, grade of recommendation D.

Profunda Femoris Artery (PFA) arises from lateral aspect of femoral artery 3.5 cm distal to inguinal ligament. It gives lateral and medial circumflex femoral arteries from lateral and medial aspect respectively. Following variation was reported in right lower limb of a 60 year male cadaver, during routine dissection for medical students. Profunda Femoris Artery (PFA) arose from lateral aspect of femoral artery 1 cm distal to inguinal ligament, running laterally and down words parallel to femoral artery the profunda femoris passed beneath rectus femoris, sartorius and vastus medialis successively, finally pierced adductor magnus as forth perforator artery, 6 cm above knee joint.

Aimed at improving the dynamic response of the lower limb for patients, an impedance control method based on sliding mode was presented to implement an active rehabilitation. Impedance control can achieve a target-reaching training without the help of a therapist and sliding mode control has a robustness to system uncertainty and vary limb strength. Simulations demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method for lower limb rehabilitation.
