This study set out to uncover brand positioning configurations by presenting state-of-the-art brand management literature and applying a novel, mixed-methods approach to examine the under-researched wine industry transformation towards open innovation in branding. German winery brands were analyzed using a multimethod approach leaning on a novel netnographic methodology and multiple sources. The sample included 572 wineries from all 13 German wine regions with website text data and online review text data from each winery. The study identified eight prime keywords used to describe both brand identity as well as wine brand image. It revealed word–price clusters of brand identity and image. The results offer insights into communication and pricing opportunities for wine brand identity as well as image, thereby contributing to open brand innovation.

Purpose – This paper aims to apply the business-to-business (B2B) Service Brand Identity (SBI) scale to empirically assess the influence of service brand identity on brand performance for the first time. Design/methodology/approach – Based on data collected from 421 senior marketing executives, this paper applies the B2B SBI and structural equation modeling to fulfill the above purpose. Findings – Brand personality and human resource initiatives have a positive and significant influence on brand performance. Corporate visual identity, in addition to an employee and client focus, has an insignificant impact on performance. Consistent communications have a negative and significant influence on brand performance. Research limitations/implications – Data were only collected from executives in the UK. This research would benefit from replicative studies. Practical implications – This research empirically establishes the brand management activities that drive brand performance. Originality/value – This is the first empirical study to assess the influence service brand identity has on brand performance.

This article is about the brand positioning of service organizations. The aim of the paper is to inquire about the practice of brand positioning of communication agencies, and it entails the following subjects: brand identity, strategies for positioning, types of communication, system of identification, and views about the importance of positioning. The empirical research done is of the exploratory type, being qualitative, not probabilistic, and the method used for collecting data is personal depth interviewing. The data was collected from the eight most important agencies in Santa Catarina State. The results suggest that some of these communication agencies use the brand positioning strategy, but that they lack the appropriate methods, and their investment is not sufficient to communicate the positioning desired. PurposeThis paper aims to deliver new models of brand management in bottom‐of‐the‐pyramid (BoP) markets, considering the personality traits, image, technology and reputation of firms associated with the brands.Design/methodology/approachReviewing the previous research studies, the paper advocates new strategies for enhancing the performance of global brands in BoP market segments, improving brand‐positioning approaches, measuring brand performance and consumer value, evaluating brand attributes, and underlining brand dynamics in the competitive marketplace.FindingsThe study argues that the performance of global brands in low‐profile consumer market segments is constrained by high transaction costs and coordination problems along the brand promotions, consumption and consumer value chain. Hence, firms looking towards managing brands in BoP market segments need to reduce brand costs by increasing the volume of sales and augmenting consumer value. Brands of BoP market segments are socially and culturally embedded. They are co‐created by consumers and firms, and positioned with the influence of brand equity of the premium market. Unlike traditional brands, BoP brands may be sufficiently malleable to support brand interpretations in the rural and suburban consumer segments.Research limitations/implicationsAcquired brands need to be merged into the existing structure, especially where these brands occupy market positions similar to those of existing brands. A balance needs to be maintained between the brand name and its equity. Managers should keep themselves better informed about consumer needs, market changes and company initiatives, thereby enabling staff to help consumers to improve service quality, which in turn can improve market positioning.Practical implicationsIn today's rapidly changing product markets, a firm needs to focus on a limited number of strategic brands in international markets in order to consolidate and strengthen its position and enhance brand power. The paper offers new business strategies to managers on brand positioning and targeting in suburban and rural markets with convenience packaging, pricing and psychodynamics.Originality/valueNew initiatives to manage global brands in BoP markets comprising suburban and rural markets that need to be implemented in the existing organizational culture are discussed.

The COVID-19 pandemic has seriously shaken the foundations of modern brand management. The first reaction of communication specialists was to look for ways to optimize communication messages during a crisis, but is that enough? The author explores the possibilities for complete restructuring of the modern brand – i.e. brand positioning, mission and vision of the brand during such complex crises. Is it possible to talk about a new type of Post-truth? The article aims to establish some of its characteristics.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate how the abstract marketing concept of brand heritage is operationalized through visual elements on social media. Design/methodology/approach A mixed-methods approach combines interviews with marketing experts, a focus group with specialized academics, an open coding of Instagram images and the systematic coding of 800 images of eight champagne brands (company-generated content). Findings The study identifies 20 brand heritage codes (e.g. groupings of brand heritage visual cues with homogenous meanings). These codes are combined in three different factors (brand symbols, product legacy and consumption rituals) that discriminate between brands. Research limitations/implications The paper offers a description of what brand heritage looks like in practice. This visual operationalization of brand heritage is based on a single category, a limitation that further research can address. The results also contribute to research on visual brand identity and provide practical insights for the management of brand heritage at the product brand level. Originality/value This paper bridges the gap between the strategic management of brand heritage as a resource and the way it is concretely made available to the consumers.

Theoretical basis This case highlights repositioning strategies that change a product’s position in the minds of the consumer in response to changes in market conditions. These changes should be balanced with a certain amount of brand authenticity and continuity. Brand identity is the vision, core values and key beliefs of the brand. There are four main branding strategies as follows: house of brands, endorsed brands, sub-brands and branded house. These options can be placed in a continuum and the position on the branding relationship spectrum reflects the degree to which brands are separated in strategy execution and in the customer’s minds. Research methodology This case is based on secondary data, mainly from interviews of industry leaders in business journals, newspapers, research articles and industry reports, including from international organizations. Case overview/synopsis The case examines the frequent revisions in branding strategies by India’s second largest group of hotels – Indian Hotels Company Limited. Repositioning involves changing the market’s perceptions of an offering to compete more effectively in its target segments. However, a certain amount of continuity is also essential to the brand’s development over time. The case helps students to view the brand from two angles as follows: the angle of brand identity and the disruptive angle of new developments. They will examine the rationale for the frequent repositioning strategies using the brand relationship spectrum and whether these will affect the brand identity of the iconic brand Taj. Complexity academic level This case has been effectively used with MBA Marketing students in Product and Brand Management and Services Marketing classes to demonstrate how companies use repositioning strategies as a considered response to the market conditions. As competitive conditions and consumers evolve, changes in branding strategy will be necessitated. The students are expected to have basic knowledge of brand architecture and brand strategies. The case can be used to illustrate the brand relationship spectrum and the differences among branding strategies in brand architecture. This article aims to provide a critical review of the published literature related to retail marketing strategies and brand management in the global retail industry. The literature review covers the overview of marketing strategies; retail marketing strategies and technological utilization; international retail marketing strategies in the global retail industry; retail marketing strategies and internationalization; the challenges of retail marketing strategies in the fashion retail industry; the overview of brand management; and the significance of brand management in the global retail industry. Effective marketing is necessary to compete in the ever-growing worldwide retail industry sector. The improved retail profits are within reach with the purposeful retail marketing strategies. Brand management means defining the brand, positioning the brand, and delivering the brand. The literature review analysis provides both practitioners and researchers an important understanding about retail marketing strategies and brand management in the global retail industry.

This article describes how there is a large amount of research on strategic management literature on wine industry; however, there is insufficient published literature that underlines the importance of wine as a creative product. In the aesthetic economy, specific industries such as food, there is an active contribution to economic growth. In this context, artistic creation plays a fundamental role and creativity and savoir-faire to become symbols of a new way to produce. In this context, wine can be considered an aesthetic product. It is a symbol of quality, civilization and authenticity. Wine is defined as “the liquid art” also, because its production process is a combination of emotions and creativity, but also branding and design. This article aims to understand if wine can really be considered a creative product and if the wine industry can be considered a creative industry with the goal of developing a creative wine business. Finally, this article presents a synthesis of a qualitative analysis based on secondary data, with contributions coming from literature and empirical cases.
