This study presents insights into the influence of the characteristics of tourism itineraries on tourist purchasing behavior. We adopted data between 1 August 2019 and 30 November 2019 from the Qunar, the biggest online tourism platform in China and 4366 samples on travel itineraries were obtained. The ordinary least square regression (OLS) method was used. Controlling for product-related and channel-related factors, we demonstrate that in terms of tourism destination choice, outbound tourism products attract an increased number of tourists; in terms of the types of travel, private travel has replaced group travel to become the majority of the tourism market; in terms of the length of travel, mid-term travel (4–6 days) is the first choice, outnumbering short-term and long-term ones; price promotions such as discount for early decision, multi-person price reduction and membership prices significantly lead to increased sales; online reviews also have great impact on tourist purchasing behavior. In sum, this study uses a unique data set to reveal the influence of online tourism product characteristics on sales and provide potential guidance of the marketing strategy in response to consumer behavior for the online tourism industry.

PurposeThis study identifies the factors responsible for obtaining price premium on privately placed equity in a developing market.Design/methodology/approachWe examine a unique data set of a special case of private placement of equity, Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) in India purchased at a premium. The study analyzed 188 equity issues offered between September 2006 and December 2014. On average, we find that QIP issues received a price premium of 4.38%. The study employed binary probit and ordinary least square regression models to analyze the probability and magnitude of the premium.FindingsThe study attributes the price premium of QIP to certification effect through group affiliation, signaling through promoters' ownership and monitoring effect through existing institutional investors. These factors influence the probability of premium for QIP issues. However, group affiliation and institutional ownership do not significantly influence the magnitude of the premium.Originality/valueThe private placement of equity is usually offered at a discount. Our findings contribute to the existing literature by evaluating the premium obtained on private placement as a unique scenario in emerging market supported through certification hypothesis, monitoring hypothesis and signaling.

This paper aims to examine the impact of TripAdvisor reviews on behavioural intentions, basing on travellers' trust towards the e-WOM reviews. Four factors are proposed for building travellers’ trust and behavioural intentions: information quality, credibility, adoption and usefulness. Trust is expected to mediate the relationship between eWOM attributes and travellers’ behavioural intention. Data from 410 travellers were analysed using Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), and the findings show that TripAdvisor e-WOM attributes (information credibility, adoption and usefulness) significantly influence the traveller's trust. Besides, traveller behavioural intention was influenced considerably by TripAdvisor eWOM information credibility and usefulness. Lastly, trust in e-WOM significantly mediates travellers' behavioural intention. This paper confirms the importance of eWOM in the context of the tourism industry and travellers' trust and behaviour towards online review, which altered how consumers behave before deciding to travel.

Investors rely on statistical forecasts to guide their investment decisions. Given the relative opportunity cost associated with these decisions, and the huge financial implication of commercial property investments, such insights are invaluable; because investors can choose investments from an informed position. Despite this recognised benefit of forecasting, there has been little focus on forecasting the performance (total returns) of commercial property investments in Lagos Metropolis. This paper, therefore, aims to forecast the total returns of two commercial property investment types (shops and offices) in five sub-markets (Yaba, Ikeja, Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Lagos Island) within the Lagos property market. In doing so, the study uses longitudinal data for the capital and rental values of commercial property investments in Lagos between 2006 to 2018 alongside a simple regression model for 2019-2021 predicted total returns. Autocorrelation was used in testing the predictive validity of this data set. Furthermore, multiple-forecasts were evaluated simultaneously for accuracy and, together, they illustrate the difficulty of compiling a robust dataset in the absence of a central database. This paper suggests that the sampled total returns for the five sub-markets fluctuate and tend to decline as seen in the Ordinary Least Square Regression technique for 2019 to 2021. The results also suggest a low autocorrelation in most of the sub-markets, which indicates that the observed pattern of returns may not continue. This paper recommends that investors be wary of commercial property investment in Lagos Metropolis, due to the observed poor performance (low and fluctuating total returns). It is also recommended that a property database be constructed to improve property data reliability and allow for the application of complex quantitative forecasting techniques.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationships among perception of past portfolio returns, optimism and financial decisions. Design/methodology/approach The relationships are examined using a data set of both retail and institutional investors in Malaysia and estimated using ordinary least square regression. Findings The results demonstrate that perception of past portfolio returns influences both retail and institutional investors’ trading and risk taking. Optimism measured as relative investment optimism and personal investment optimism similarly influences both groups of investors’ financial decisions. However, perception of past portfolio returns causes only retail investors to exhibit optimism. The results furthermore show that only for retail investors perception of past portfolio returns indirectly influences financial decisions, through the mediating channel of optimism. Practical implications The findings on the influences of perception of past portfolio returns and the mediating channel in decision process help to understand the differences between retail and institutional investors. Retail investors are found to be more susceptible to optimism. Therefore, regulators in Malaysia may enhance their initiatives by incorporating the peril of forming optimistic expectations in financial decisions, by giving special focus on retail investors. Originality/value This paper focuses on investors’ perception of past portfolio returns and its influence on various financial decisions, unlike past portfolio returns or market returns. Also, this paper is among the first to demonstrate the mediating channel of optimism in investors’ decision process.

Purpose In this study, micro-foundations of strategy as the theoretical framework to study the effect of managers’ individual characteristics on multinational team performance are adopted. In particular, the purpose of this paper is to study managers’ multilingual communication abilities and multicultural background, and their role in, respectively, effectively reconfiguring team human assets and sensing cognitively distant opportunities and threats. Design/methodology/approach This study uses national football teams competing in national and international competitions and their coaches’ characteristics as the data set to test the theory. Using random coefficient modeling and ordinary least square regression, this paper analyzes two samples of 222 and 79 teams and found that both these characteristics contribute to team performance; however, their effects differ depending on the team environment. Findings Multicultural managers contribute positively to team performance only when the team is operating in a highly diverse environment, their effect is not statistically significant in homogeneous environments. In less diverse environments, it is the multilingual manager who can improve team performance through more efficient communication and greater effects of leadership on the team. Originality/value Managers’ characteristics such as their multicultural background and multilingual capabilities affect team performance. In particular, these effects come into play in highly diverse and international settings. Micro-foundation literature is advised to focus on the internationalization and multicultural backgrounds of managers as a precursor for organizational international performance.

This research examines the effect of enterprise risk management on firm value in Pakistan. Further, this study empirically examines company characteristics that establish the execution of an enterprise risk management system. Using a sample of final dataset of 83 non-financial firms located in Pakistan. The sample included non-financial firms from the year 1999 to 2015 and so up to seventeen observation years per company. As in context of Pakistan, most of the organizations are already implement an ERM programs and establish specialized ERM departments because the ERM is now a global term and has become increasingly relevant because of the growing difficulty of risk and an additional development of regulatory frame works. For the empirical evidences, data collected from non-financial firms listed at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX). Results of logistic regression shows that Capital Opacity, Profitability, Financial Leverage, Firm Size and Slack have positive impact on the implementation of an ERM system but Industrial diversification, Industry and Return on Equity are negatively related to an ERM engagement. The results of ordinary least square regression finds positive relationship between use of an ERM and firm value.

The tourism sector is experiencing numerous challenges as a result of the global economic crisis. After a significant contraction in 2009, tourism rebounded strongly  in  2010  and  in  2011  the  international  tourist  arrivals  and  receipts  are projected to increase substantially. The Tourism industry is expected to show a sustained recovery in 2012. The crisis has particularly strong impact and slightly negative consequences in Bangladesh. The country is undergoing a political crisis, as well, and it seems that the forthcoming elections may be the only solution for the restoration of stability and social peace.  In addition, tourism can be the driving force behind Bangladesh economic recovery. However, for its achievement the country’s policy makers should take several measures towards restructuring and improving the sector. These measures include: enhancement of alternative forms of tourism; environmental protection; creation of quality infrastructure; and boost of competitiveness through a tourism product that offers value for money

As customers’ consumption is increasingly dominated by technology-driven systems, online self-verification becomes an important aspect of customers’ online purchasing behavior and plays a significant role in shaping social interactions in the online community. Across two studies, we examine whether online self-verification with an identity versus without an identity will lead to the different quality of online reviews. Study 1 used topic modeling with actual data stripped from Facebook and TripAdvisor customer online review sites and showed no difference between customer reviews underpinned with an identity or without. Likewise, Study 2 used an experimental design and found no significant difference between customer reviews with or without an identity. However, significant mediation effects of social ties and social capital were found when measuring the relationship between online self-verification and customer reviews. The findings build on the literature of user-generated online reviews and have important implications for academics and hospitality practitioners.

AbstractUltrasonic image examination is the first choice for the diagnosis of thyroid papillary carcinoma. However, there are some problems in the ultrasonic image of thyroid papillary carcinoma, such as poor definition, tissue overlap and low resolution, which make the ultrasonic image difficult to be diagnosed. Capsule network (CapsNet) can effectively address tissue overlap and other problems. This paper investigates a new network model based on capsule network, which is named as ResCaps network. ResCaps network uses residual modules and enhances the abstract expression of the model. The experimental results reveal that the characteristic classification accuracy of ResCaps3 network model for self-made data set of thyroid papillary carcinoma was $$81.06\%$$ 81.06 % . Furthermore, Fashion-MNIST data set is also tested to show the reliability and validity of ResCaps network model. Notably, the ResCaps network model not only improves the accuracy of CapsNet significantly, but also provides an effective method for the classification of lesion characteristics of thyroid papillary carcinoma ultrasonic images.
