The use of adhesively bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) materials to reinforce cracked steel elements has gained widespread acceptance in order to extend the lifespan of metallic structures. This allows an important reduction of the stress intensity factor (SIF) at the crack tip and thus a significant increase of the fatigue life. This paper deals with the assessment of the SIF for repaired cracked steel plates, using semi-empirical analysis and finite element analysis. Metallic plates with only one crack originating from a center hole were investigated. Virtual crack closure technique (VCCT) was used to define and evaluate the stress intensity factor at crack tip. The obtained modeling results are compared with experimental investigations led by the authors for different reinforcement configurations including symmetrical and non-symmetrical reinforcement, normal modulus and ultra-high-modulus CFRP plates, and pre-stressed CFRP plates. Results show that finite element model (FEM) analysis can obviously simulate the fatigue performance of the CFRP bonded steel plates with different reinforcement configurations. Moreover, a parametric analysis of the influence of the pre-stressing level was also conducted. The results show that an increase of the pre-stressing level results in an increase of the fatigue life of the element.

Abstract This paper presents the application of the rules from ASME Section VIII, Division 3 of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code for a fracture mechanics evaluation to determine the damage tolerance and fatigue life of a flowline clamp connector. The guidelines from API 579-1 / ASME FFS-1 Fitness-For-Service for the stress analysis of a crack-like flaw have been considered for this assessment. The crack tip is modeled using a refined mesh around the crack tip that is referred to as a focused mesh approach in API 579-1 / ASME FFS-1. The driving force method is used as an alternative to the failure assessment diagram method to account for the influence of crack tip plasticity. The J integral is determined using elastic-plastic finite element analysis and converted to an equivalent stress intensity factor to be compared to the fracture toughness of the material. The fatigue life is calculated using the Paris Law equation and the stress intensity factor calculated from the finite element analysis. The allowable number of design cycles is determined using the safety factors required from Division 3 of the ASME Pressure Vessel Code.

The stress intensity factor (SIF) under the combined bending and torsion loading were studied using a finite element (FE) analysis ANSYS. A 20-node iso-parametric element was used to model the crack tip and the square-root singularity of stress/strain was employed by shifting the mid-side node to the ¼ position to the crack tip. Different crack geometries and loading ratios were used and due to the non-symmetrical analysis involved, a full FE model was developed and analyzed. Remotely applied bending and torsion moment were subjected to the FE model and the SIF were then calculated along the crack front under such loadings. The SIF calculated using the finite element analysis (FEA) was compared with those results obtained using an effective combined SIF method. According to the comparisons, the discrepancies were dependent on the normalized coordinate, x/h, the relative crack depth, a/D, the crack aspect ratio, a/b and the loading ratio, .

The purpose of this research is to compare both British standard BS 7910 (2013) and American standard API 579/ASME FFS-1 (2016) stress intensity factor (SIF) solutions by considering a series of semielliptical surface cracks located in the external surface of a pressurized hollow cylinder in the axial direction. Finite element analysis was used as a comparison basis for both standards’ SIF results. The solution from the British standard provided consistent results compared to Finite Element (FE) results for crack depth not much higher than half the thickness in the deepest and surface-breaking points. Above those limits, the British standard’s solutions diverged quite a lot from the American standard, whose results followed FE values for every crack depth/thickness ratio tested with a maximum percentage difference of 1.83%.

Shattered rim cracking, propagation of a subsurface crack parallel to the tread surface, is one of the dominant railroad wheel failure types observed in North America. This crack initiation and propagation life depends on several factors, such as wheel rim thickness, wheel load, residual stresses in the rim, and the size and location of material defects in the rim. This article investigates the effect of the above-mentioned parameters on shattered rim cracking, using finite element analysis and fracture mechanics. This cracking is modelled using a three-dimensional, multiresolution, elastic–plastic finite element model of a railroad wheel. Material defects are modelled as mathematically sharp cracks. Rolling contact loading is simulated by applying the wheel load on the tread surface over a Hertzian contact area. The equivalent stress intensity factor ranges at the subsurface crack tips are estimated using uni-modal stress intensity factors obtained from the finite element analysis and a mixed-mode crack growth model. The residual stress and wheel wear effects are also included in modelling shattered rim cracking. The analysis results show that the sensitive depth below the tread surface for shattered rim cracking ranges from 19.05 to 22.23 mm, which is in good agreement with field observations. The relationship of the equivalent stress intensity factor (Δ K eq) at the crack tip to the load magnitude is observed to be approximately linear. The analysis results show that the equivalent stress intensity factor (Δ K eq) at the crack tip depends significantly on the residual stress state in the wheel. Consideration of as-manufactured residual stresses decreases the Δ K eq at the crack tip by about 40 per cent compared to that of no residual stress state, whereas consideration of service-induced residual stresses increases the Δ K eq at the crack tip by about 50 per cent compared to that of as-manufactured residual stress state. In summary, the methodology developed in this article can help to predict whether a shattered rim crack will propagate for a given set of parameters, such as load magnitude, rim thickness, crack size, crack location, and residual stress state.

The objective was to quantify the variation of stress intensity factor to weld root flaw sizes in steel frame connections. Finite-element analyses were used to study fracture toughness in welded beam-column connections. Investigations of fracture behavior mainly focused on the standard pre-Northridge connection geometry. Finite element analysis was performed using the ANSYS computer program. Stress intensity factor was calculated through a J-integral approach. Results show that stress intensity factor is not uniform and is largest in the middle of beam flange. Stress intensity factor increases nearly linear with the increase of flaw size. Backing bars have little effect on weld fractures.

Based on the viscoelastic material property of polyethylene pipe, software ANSYS was used to simulate and analyze the mechanical property of polyethylene pipe butt fusion joints with circumferential surface crack defects. The viscoelastic material creep parameters were characterized as Prony series and 1/4 node singular element was selected for meshing along the boundaries of the crack, then the stress intensity factor of polyethylene pipe butt fusion joints with circumferential surface crack was calculated under the uniform internal pressure. Through the finite element simulation, the result showed that polyethylene pipe were most likely to fracture failure when crack initiated. Thus the viscoelasticity of materials can be ignored when analyzing the stress intensity factor of circumferential surface cracks of polyethylene pipe. the main influencing factor of the circumferential crack defects was the ratio of the crack depth to the thickness of polyethylene pipe.
