A novel deep-blue fluorescent emitter was designed and synthesized. The external quantum efficiency (ηEQE) of the blue-emitting, doped, organic light-emitting diode (OLED) was as high as 4.34%. The device also exhibited an excellent color purity with Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of x = 0.15 and y = 0.05. In addition, the triplet energy had a value of 2.7 eV, which is rare for an emitter with deep-blue emission, which makes it a preferred choice for high-performance white OLEDs. By optimizing the device architectures, the color of hybrid-white OLEDs could be tunable from warm white to cool white using the aforementioned material as a bifunctional material. That is, the ηEQE of the hybrid warm-white OLED is 20.1% with a CIE x and y of 0.46 and 0.48 and the ηEQE of the hybrid cool-white OLED is 9% with a CIE x and y of 0.34 and 0.33.

We report an efficient deep-blue organic light-emitting diode (OLED) based on a heptazine-based thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) emitter, 2,5,8-tris(diphenylamine)-tri-s-triazine (HAP-3DPA). The deep-blue-emitting compound, HAP-3DPA, was designed and synthesized by combining the relatively rigid electron-accepting heptazine core with three electron-donating diphenylamine units. Due to the rigid molecular structure and intramolecular charge transfer characteristics, HAP-3DPA in solid state presented a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 67.0% and obvious TADF nature with a short delayed fluorescent lifetime of 1.1 μs. Most importantly, an OLED incorporating HAP-3DPA exhibited deep-blue emission with Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.16, 0.13), a peak luminance of 10,523 cd/m−2, and a rather high external quantum efficiency of 12.5% without any light out-coupling enhancement. This finding not only reports an efficient deep-blue TADF molecule, but also presents a feasible pathway to construct high-performance deep-blue emitters and devices based on the heptazine skeleton.

Two deep blue-emitting dendrimers 11 and 12 with carbazole containing dendrons were developed in this contribution. The carbazole-containing units were introduced to tune the charge-transporting property of the desired dendrimers. The investigation of photophysical properties, electrochemical, and electroluminescence properties demonstrated that the balance between electron and hole transporting was achieved from both dendrimers. The preliminary organic light-emitting diode (OLED) fabrication achieved a pure blue colour with stable CIE chromaticity coordinates (X: 0.15–0.16, Y: 0.09–0.10) for 11 and 12. Single layer deep blue emitting diode devices with higher efficiency are achieved without the colour changing. The investigation of OLED performance indicates that dendrimers 11 and 12 are promising light-emitting materials with pure blue colour and good colour stability for OLEDs.
