In recent years, rare earth doped upconversion nanocrystals have been widely used in different fields owing to their unique merits. Although rare earth chlorides and trifluoroacetates are commonly used precursors for the synthesis of nanocrystals, they have certain disadvantages. For example, rare earth chlorides are expensive and rare earth trifluoroacetates produce toxic gases during the reaction. To overcome these drawbacks, we use the less expensive rare earth hydroxide as a precursor to synthesize β-NaYF4 nanoparticles with multiform shapes and sizes. Small-sized nanocrystals (15 nm) can be obtained by precisely controlling the synthesis conditions. Compared with the previous methods, the current method is more facile and has lower cost. In addition, the defects of the nanocrystal surface are reduced through constructing core–shell structures, resulting in enhanced upconversion luminescence intensity.

The structure and anisotropic magnetization of One-dimensional (1D) Nd/Co/PA66 coaxial nanocables prepared by a low cost physical infiltration and electrodeposition methods are investigated. The preparation of Co nanotubes, Co/PA66 two-layer nanotubes and Nd/Co/PA66 three-layer nanocales is described, respectively. The structure, chemical composition and magnetic properties of various nanomaterials were investigated. The results show that the magnetic properties were affected by the rare earth metal Nd and the structural properties. The residual magnetization ratio of Nd/Co/PA66 nanocables is the biggest due to the synergistic effect of Nd and Co. In addition, the magnetization processes of the nanostructure were discussed in detail. We believe that these methods may provide an idea for ferromagnetic alloys and permanent magnet material and suitable for future applications in perpendicular recording media.

AbstractHighly photochemically stable nanoparticles, in which upconversion luminescence can be excited – so-called upconversion nanocrystals (UC-NCs) – exhibit widely separated (up to 500 nm) narrow luminescence bands in the visible (VIS) region located far from the excitation near-infrared (NIR) laser radiation, and thus can be more easily identified compared to organic luminophores and semiconductor nanoparticles. Due to a deep penetration of exciting infrared (IR) radiation, the absence of parasitic fluorescence of biomolecules and the absence of phototoxicity and photobleaching upon near IR excitation, UC-NCs can be efficiently used as fluorescent probes in biological studies and fluorescence diagnostics (FD). The doping of such nanoparticles with GdWe studied the upconversion characteristics of inorganic nanoparticles made of different materials doped with rare-earth ion (REI) pairs YbBased on the results obtained, the matrix LaThe investigated complex polycrystalline oxide compounds are promising as diagnostic agents for biological tissues visualization by fluorescence, light scattering, and nuclear magnetic resonance imaging.
