In this paper, we report on the realization of a highly sensitive and low cost 3D surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platform. The structural features of the Ag dendrite network that characterize the SERS material were exploited, attesting a remarked self-similarity and scale invariance over a broad range of length scales that are typical of fractal systems. Additional structural and optical investigations confirmed the purity of the metal network, which was characterized by low oxygen contamination and by broad optical resonances introduced by the fractal behavior. The SERS performances of the 3D fractal Ag dendrites were tested for the detection of lysozyme as probe molecule, attesting an enhancement factor of ~2.4 × 106. Experimental results assessed the dendrite material as a suitable SERS detection platform for biomolecules investigations in hydration conditions.

In this article, we demonstrate a facile, rapid, and practical approach to growing high-quality Cu2S nanosheets decorated with Ag nanoparticles (NPs) through the galvanic reduction method. The Ag/Cu2S nanosheets were efficiently applied to the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and photocatalytic degradation applications. The photodegradation of RhB dye with the Ag/Cu2S nanosheets composites occurred at a rate of 2.9 times faster than that observed with the undecorated Cu2S nanosheets. Furthermore, the Ag/Cu2S nanosheets displayed highly sensitive SERS detection of organic pollutant (R6G) as low as 10−9 M. The reproducibility experiments indicated that the Ag/Cu2S nanosheets composites could be used for dual functionality in a new generation of outstandingly sensitive SERS probes for detection and stable photocatalysts.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensors are very powerful analytical tools for the highly sensitive detection of chemical and biological molecules. Substantial efforts have been devoted to the design of a great number of hybrid SERS substrates such as silicon or zinc oxide nanosystems coated with gold/silver nanoparticles. By comparison with the SERS sensors based on Au and Ag nanoparticles/nanostructures, higher enhancement factors and excellent reproducibilities are achieved with hybrid SERS nanosensors. This enhancement can be due to the appearance of hotspots located at the interface between the metal (Au/Ag) and the semiconducting substrates. Thus, in this last decade, great advances in the domain of hybrid SERS nanosensors have occurred. In this short review, the recent advances of these hybrid metal-coated semiconducting nanostructures as SERS sensors of chemical and biological molecules are presented.
