The use of machine learning algorithms to classify complex landscapes has been revolutionized by the introduction of deep learning techniques, particularly in remote sensing. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have shown great success in the classification of complex high-dimensional remote sensing imagery, specifically in wetland classification. On the other hand, the state-of-the-art natural language processing (NLP) algorithms are transformers. Although the transformers have been studied for a few remote sensing applications, the integration of deep CNNs and transformers has not been studied, particularly in wetland mapping. As such, in this study, we explore the potential and possible limitations to be overcome regarding the use of a multi-model deep learning network with the integration of a modified version of the well-known deep CNN network of VGG-16, a 3D CNN network, and Swin transformer for complex coastal wetland classification. Moreover, we discuss the potential and limitation of the proposed multi-model technique over several solo models, including a random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), VGG-16, 3D CNN, and Swin transformer in the pilot site of Saint John city located in New Brunswick, Canada. In terms of F-1 score, the multi-model network obtained values of 0.87, 0.88, 0.89, 0.91, 0.93, 0.93, and 0.93 for the recognition of shrub wetland, fen, bog, aquatic bed, coastal marsh, forested wetland, and freshwater marsh, respectively. The results suggest that the multi-model network is superior to other solo classifiers from 3.36% to 33.35% in terms of average accuracy. Results achieved in this study suggest the high potential for integrating and using CNN networks with the cutting-edge transformers for the classification of complex landscapes in remote sensing.

Pattern classification is related with the automatic finding of regularities in dataset through the utilization of various learning techniques. Thus, the classification of the objects into a set of categories or classes is provided. This study is undertaken to evaluate deep learning methodologies to the classification of stock patterns. In order to classify patterns that are obtained from stock charts, convolutional neural networks (CNNs), recurrent neural networks (RNNs), and long-short term memory networks (LSTMs) are employed. To demonstrate the efficiency of proposed model in categorizing patterns, hand-crafted image dataset is constructed from stock charts in Istanbul Stock Exchange and NASDAQ Stock Exchange. Experimental results show that the usage of convolutional neural networks exhibits superior classification success in recognizing patterns compared to the other deep learning methodologies.

Remote sensing imagery combined with deep learning strategies is often regarded as an ideal solution for interpreting scenes and monitoring infrastructures with remarkable performance levels. In addition, the road network plays an important part in transportation, and currently one of the main related challenges is detecting and monitoring the occurring changes in order to update the existent cartography. This task is challenging due to the nature of the object (continuous and often with no clearly defined borders) and the nature of remotely sensed images (noise, obstructions). In this paper, we propose a novel framework based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to classify secondary roads in high-resolution aerial orthoimages divided in tiles of 256 × 256 pixels. We will evaluate the framework’s performance on unseen test data and compare the results with those obtained by other popular CNNs trained from scratch.

Scene classification is an important aspect of image/video understanding and segmentation. However, remote-sensing scene classification is a challenging image recognition task, partly due to the limited training data, which causes deep-learning Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to overfit. Another difficulty is that images often have very different scales and orientation (viewing angle). Yet another is that the resulting networks may be very large, again making them prone to overfitting and unsuitable for deployment on memory- and energy-limited devices. We propose an efficient deep-learning approach to tackle these problems. We use transfer learning to compensate for the lack of data, and data augmentation to tackle varying scale and orientation. To reduce network size, we use a novel unsupervised learning approach based on k-means clustering, applied to all parts of the network: most network reduction methods use computationally expensive supervised learning methods, and apply only to the convolutional or fully connected layers, but not both. In experiments, we set new standards in classification accuracy on four remote-sensing and two scene-recognition image datasets.

This article presents a work oriented to assistive robotics, where a scenario is established for a robot to reach a tool in the hand of a user, when they have verbally requested it by his name. For this, three convolutional neural networks are trained, one for recognition of a group of tools, which obtained an accuracy of 98% identifying the tools established for the application, that are scalpel, screwdriver and scissors; one for speech recognition, trained with the names of the tools in Spanish language, where its validation accuracy reach a 97.5% in the recognition of the words; and another for recognition of the user's hand, taking in consideration the classification of 2 gestures: Open and Closed hand, where a 96.25% accuracy was achieved. With those networks, tests in real time are performed, presenting results in the delivery of each tool with a 100% of accuracy, i.e. the robot was able to identify correctly what the user requested, recognize correctly each tool and deliver the one need when the user opened their hand, taking an average time of 45 seconds in the execution of the application.

Abstract Hyperspectral remote sensing based image classification is found to be a very widely used method employed for scene analysis that is from a remote sensing data which is of a high spatial resolution. Classification is a critical task in the processing of remote sensing. On the basis of the fact that there are different materials with reflections in a particular spectral band, all the traditional pixel-wise classifiers both identify and also classify all materials on the basis of their spectral curves (or pixels). Owing to the dimensionality of the remote sensing data of high spatial resolution along with a limited number of labelled samples, a remote sensing image of a high spatial resolution tends to suffer from something known as the Hughes phenomenon which can pose a serious problem. In order to overcome such a small-sample problem, there are several methods of learning like the Support Vector Machine (SVM) along with the other methods that are kernel based and these were introduced recently for a remote sensing classification of the image and this has shown a good performance. For the purpose of this work, an SVM along with Radial Basis Function (RBF) method was proposed. But, a feature learning approach for the classification of the hyperspectral image is based on the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). The results of the experiment that were based on various image datasets that were hyperspectral which implies that the method proposed will be able to achieve a better performance of classification compared to other traditional methods like the SVM and the RBF kernel and also all conventional methods based on deep learning (CNN).
