Handover Management (HM) is pivotal for providing service continuity, enormous reliability and extreme-low latency, and meeting sky-high data rates, in wireless communications. Current HM approaches based on a single criterion may lead to unnecessary and frequent handovers due to a partial network view that is constrained to information about link quality. In turn, HM approaches based on multicriteria may present a failure of handovers and wrong network selection, decreasing the throughput and increasing the packet loss in the network. This paper proposes SIM-Know, an approach for improving HM. SIM-Know improves HM by including a Semantic Information Model (SIM) that enables context-aware and multicriteria handover decisions. SIM-Know also introduces a SIM-based distributed Knowledge Base Profile (KBP) that provides local and global intelligence to make contextual and proactive handover decisions. We evaluated SIM-Know in an emulated wireless network. When the end-user device moves at low and moderate speeds, the results show that our approach outperforms the Signal Strong First (SSF, single criterion approach) and behaves similarly to the Analytic Hierarchy Process combined with the Technique for Order Preferences by Similarity to the Ideal Solution (AHP-TOPSIS, multicriteria approach) regarding the number of handovers and the number of throughput drops. SSF outperforms SIM-Know and AHP-TOPSIS regarding the handover latency metric because SSF runs a straightforward process for making handover decisions. At high speeds, SIM-Know outperforms SSF and AHP-TOPSIS regarding the number of handovers and the number of throughput drops and, further, improves the throughput, delay, jitter, and packet loss in the network. Considering the obtained results, we conclude that SIM-Know is a practical and attractive solution for cognitive HM.

With the widespread effective usage of LEDs the visible light communication (VLC) system has brought out an increasing interest in the field of wireless communication recently. VLC is envisioned to be an appealing substitute to RF systems because of the advantages of LEDs such as high communication security, rich spectrum, etc. For achieving bearable inter symbol interference (ISI) and high data rates, OFDM can be employed in VLC. In this paper, the performance of VLC system with popular unipolar versions of OFDM viz. Flip-OFDM and ACO-OFDM is analyzed in fading channels. From the simulation results it is seen that the Flip-OFDM-VLC system outperforms the ACO-OFDM-VLC system in terms of bit error rate and is well suited for future 5G applications.

There are many scenarios where high resolution, wide field of view video is useful. Such panorama video may be generated using camera arrays where the feeds from multiple cameras pointing at different parts of the captured area are stitched together. However, processing the different steps of a panorama video pipeline in real-time is challenging due to the high data rates and the stringent timeliness requirements. In our research, we use panorama video in a sport analysis system called Bagadus. This system is deployed at Alfheim stadium in Tromsø, and due to live usage, the video events must be generated in real-time. In this paper, we describe our real-time panorama system built using a low-cost CCD HD video camera array. We describe how we have implemented different components and evaluated alternatives. The performance results from experiments ran on commodity hardware with and without co-processors like graphics processing units (GPUs) show that the entire pipeline is able to run in real-time.

AbstractUnderwater wireless optical communications (UWOC) recently emerge as a solution to the problem of underwater communication for link with a high data rate, low delay, safety, and high immunity. In this study, the line of sight (LoS) method based on LED used for UWOC with different modulation schemes. The bit error rate (BER), signal-to-noise rate, and quality factor are used for assessing system performance and link quality. Besides the effect of transmitting angle, distance link (d), and transmitting power (PT) are analysed. Results show that 8-pulse position modulation (PPM) is the best modulation scheme for achieving a good link in the LoS method.

The increasing networking and digitization of machine tools and automation components provides the opportunity to record signals with high data rates and great diversity. This paper describes first investigations on the feasibility of a process-parallel detection of component defects on the basis of internal machine tool data. Potentials and limits for this novel approach to quality assurance parallel to machining time are presented.
